Weddings aren’t cheap – well, most of the time.  

In New Zealand, the average wedding costs between $35,000 - $45,000, but depending on your tastes and needs, it can grow much higher.  

The recent wedding between Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez cost somewhere between $20 million and $50 million USD – roughly 200 times more than what the average Kiwi spends. 

However, one columnist points out that compared to their wealth, Bezos and Sanchez actually spent quite little. 

So Kevin Milne is wondering, is it Bezos who’s being excessive, or is it the rest of us.

Kevin Milne: The excessive costs of weddings

Running a marathon is a task on many people's bucket lists – whether that be a half or a full. 

Some even dedicate themselves to ultramarathons – running 60 kilometres every day for 28 days. But most people don't run it in the coldest, windiest, and driest desert on Earth, enduring sub-zero temperatures and 100 kilometre winds.  

Donna Urquhart, a pain doctor, undertook that exact Herculean task, picking up a Guiness World Record for her efforts and has written a book about it – 'Life Without Limits'.  

She told Jack Tame the idea came about in 2021, when she was watching a video podcast in which Australian polar explorer Eric Phillips was talking about his expeditions in Antarctica. 

"I was just captivated by listening to him and also watching some of the footage," Urquhart explained.  

"I've always wanted to go on a big adventure ... I thought, oh wow, I wonder if you can run in Antarctica, and if so how far can we go? And that was the beginning."
