  1. Egypt- Cairo 

Egypt's Sisi replaces head of powerful general intelligence agency 

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi named Major General Hassan Mahmoud Rashad as head of the powerful general intelligence agency on Wednesday, appointing the outgoing chief Abbas Kamel as an adviser to the presidency. 

  1. Haiti – Kenya 

Haitian prime minister urges Kenyan president to reinforce security mission 

Prime Minister Gary Conille made an urgent appeal to Kenyan President William Ruto, requesting the immediate deployment of 600 additional police officers. Conille emphasized the need for reinforced support during his trip to the United Arab Emirates and Kenya, where he discussed the challenges faced by the Haitian National Police in dealing with powerful gangs.

Botswana decides 2024 

Postal vote on this weekend ahead of Botswana's month-end general elections 

  • There are 2 032 foreign voters registered in Botswana's election, with a total of 1 038 275 registered voters.
  • Early voting is on Saturday, ahead of a 30 October main event.
  • President MokgweetsiMasisi and his predecessor Ian Khama's rival are dominating the pre-election period.

 

  1. Mozambique – Maputo 

Mozambique ruling party leads early election results as opposition cries foul 

Mozambique's ruling party Frelimo was leading provisional election results in all 11 provinces on Wednesday, while opposition parties cried fraud and one called for a strike.  

Independent candidate Venancio Mondlane, seen as Chapo's biggest challenger, said he was in the lead according to his own tally and called for a nationwide strike on Monday, Oct. 21. 

Full results are expected on Oct. 24.

The Star newspaper appeared for the first time in Johannesburg as The Eastern Star. It was founded in Grahamstown under that title on January 6, 1871, and was moved to the Witwatersrand sixteen years later by its owners, brothers Thomas and George Sheffield.
