October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Breast Imaging Society of South Africa (BISSA) is urging women not to let fear, misinformation or uncertainty prevent them from seeking medical attention. Breast cancer affects approximately one in 28 South African women and is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the country. Although a diagnosis can be frightening, breast cancer is not automatically a death sentence. Dr Eugene Jooste, Member of the Breast Imaging Society of South Africa, chats to Roger Goode about how advances in treatment mean that many women diagnosed early can undergo less invasive procedures, and not everyone requires chemotherapy or a mastectomy.
