Bad News with Happy Music/Daily Check-Ins

Getting ready for a big weekend...but first, Thursday!

Kicked things off with the Thursday song(including Pat McCurdy's brief version from many moons ago!). And if you're looking for free beer...then you're in luck, because Miller Lite is buying tomorrow during Game 1 of the World Series!

In the news this morning, a couple of teens in California get busted by the FBI after planning a mass shooting, a recall on certain Toyota models, Ilhan Omar makes her first appearance since the raid on her home in DC, the Pope won't need any further cancer treatments, and France issues curfews in multiple cities.

In sports, the Atlanta Dream win Game 3 of the WNBA Finals, Week 7 in the NFL kicks off tonight with the Pats vs. the Bears on TNF, the Bucks lost their season opener in Washington last night, Josh Jacobs speaks for the first time about his recent legal troubles, and the Violent Femmes are going to be playing the pre-game party for Game One of the World Series tomorrow evening!

We talked about what's on TV & streaming today/tonight. Plus, is Halloween truly the loneliest day of the year for single people?? According to a new survey, it IS! But don't worry about those single people!!! Another survey says that they're VERY happy without a mate.

Cool story about a couple in Oregon who recently needed to replace their entire HVAC system...to the tune of $16,000!!! But got it for free thanks to the Lennox "Feel the Love" giveaway. And if you haven't seen it already...check out this story about the viral Brewer kid from the NLCS who's going to Game 2 of the World Series with his dad thanks to M-L Meyer Construction and Roofing!

It's Hypothetical Thursday, and Brian's question for Jean was: "You have to introduce your kids to rock & roll. What three songs are you playing for them?"

Meanwhile, Jean's question for Brian was: "What was your most memorable Halloween costumes?"

Elsewhere in sports, a former Titans player was released by the team after he tried to get a gun from his car after an altercation with a teammate, J.J. McCarthy is starting for the Giants this weekend, Maryland fired their head football coach, the Angels are looking for a new manager & GM, the NFL suspends ANOTHER Bills player for spitting on Sunday, all the info on the Games 3 & 4 watch parties at Miller Park, and a "Star Wars" themed Super Bowl broadcast is on the way!

Office Cora joined us just after 8am to talk about what she's up to this weekend in the 715.

And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a "Goldilocks" situation in Seattle, a family heirloom that turned out to be an unspent WWI artillery shell, an unwanted update on Tan Mom, a #FloridaWoman who is accused of fleeing a deadly car crash & trying to have her car fixed at the dealership, a #FloridaMan who got sentenced to 10 years in prison for embezzling over $14 million from his employer to fund his gambling addiction, another #FloridaMan who stole a dead guy's identity so he could acquire the guy's home, and a guy in Virginia who allegedly taped his wife to a chair so he could watch football without being bothered.

Being that it's Hump Day, we played "One Gotta Go Wednesday" this morning

And we also welcomed Tyler into the studio to help Jean make her Week 7 Pigskin Picks(she's catching up!)

Week 6 Pigskin Picks with Tyler in studio

Happy Hump Day, yo!

Cooling off considerably the next few days with some rain likely tomorrow.

Kicked off the show with a new "Who'd You Rather?" - Stuck in the Andes like that soccer team in the 70's...or stuck in the Chilean mine???

In the news this morning, the latest on the death at Six Flags in Georgia, an update on the Ilhan Omar investigation, President Trump has another rally interrupted by a protestor, Pope Leo has lung cancer, and the situation between Kelly Clarkson & that shop in Brooklyn.

In sports, the Tampa Bay Rays tied up the ALCS last night, the Brew Crew & Dodgers resume their series tonight in L.A., a look at the rest of the MLB schedule for the week, the NFL kicks off Week 6 tomorrow night in Denver, Alaric Jackson & Montez Sweat get suspended by the league...while Dre Greenlaw's appeal of his suspension does NOT get overturned.

We talked about what's on TV & streaming today/tonight. Plus, a list of horror movies that aren't that scary...and apparently, Guitar Center is going to allow people to play "Stairway to Heaven" in their stores again.

Great story about an app that lets you adopt trees and help keep them healthy & growing, a police K9 officer helped to locate & rescue a missing boy in Maryland, and a nonprofit in Kansas City that's planting orchards in vacant lots around the country.

Hump Day means "One Gotta Go Wednesday"...and since today is also "National Dessert Day", we had to choose which one of these very popular desserts had to go forever: Ice cream. Cake. Pie. Or Cookies?????

Elsewhere in sports, the Atlanta Dream are moving their home games for the upcoming WNBA Finals, Mark Sanchez reaches a settlement with the truck driver he attacked last year, Deion Sanders talks about the Colorado playbook that was found in a hotel room a few weeks ago, and a high school football coach in Oregon gets FIRED for running up the score.

Tyler from upstairs joined us in the studio again this morning to help Jean make her Week 6 Pigskin Picks.

And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a shooting at an IHop, a teen in Guatemala who woke up in a coffin(NOT DEAD YET!), a woman in NH who went to an urgent care clinic and got left inside after they closed for the day, a Delta passenger who decided to steal some of the airport vehicles rather than get on his plane, and a church deacon in Georgia who dumped four kids off at a busy intersection...four miles away from home...because they were misbehaving on the bus.

It's Hump Day...but it's also our final day in the studio this week as we'll be flipping over to the CMN Radiothon tomorrow & Friday from 6am until 6pm.

You can find out all about the Radiothon by clicking here!

MASSIVE show as we get ready to wrap it up until next Monday. We had Doc in studio this morning for his annual Oktoberfest Races Report & ticket giveaway thanks to County Materials in Holmen & Eau Claire...and Tyler was in studio as well to once again help Jean make her Pigskin Picks!

In the news this morning, the fallout from President Trump's comments about L.A. and San Deigo yesterday, a recall on rechargeable hand-warmers, Christa Pike wakes up after two failed executions, a woman in Milwuakee walked into a school and faked being a substitute teacher for several periods before being escorted out, and a shooting suspect is arrested in La Crosse along with his mother & brother.

In sports, both National League Division series resumed last night, a look at today's MLB schedule, Week 5 in the NFL gets underway tomorrow night on Prime, the WNBA playoffs continue tonight with a couple of games, Lane Johnson announces his immediate retirement from the league, the NFL Referee Association is pushing back on the recent suspensions handed down by the league, and Lionel Messi goes out in style in his final international game.

We discussed what's on TV & streaming today/tonight. Plus, with "Avengers: Doomsday" coming out in December, more & more brands are teaming up for product launches...including Dunkin Donuts. And the latest on the Sebastian Maniscalco controversy at SiriusXM radio.

In the good news department, we had a story about some mountain bikers in NH who helped rescue a horse that had become stuck in some deep mud, and a hospital valet in Buffalo gets a nice surprise after being an uplifting inspiration for cancer patients.

Today is "One Gotta Go Wednesday" and in honor of John "The Cougar" Mellencamp's 75th Birthday, we played a Mellencamp songs-edition: Jack & Diane...Pink Houses...Small Town...or Hurts So Good. Which one are you getting rid of forever?

And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a 67 year-old woman in Indiana who was doing drunken donuts on the courthouse lawn, a #FloridaMan who dressed up as an ICE agent & trying to intimidate voters was arrested, a woman is suing a popular bar in Vegas after she allegedly got injured by a mechanical penis, and another #FloridaMan who was showing naked pictures of himself doing the "helicopter" with his penis.

After Autumn Kings got done with their set at Rock Fest last month, they were headed to another gig at Upheaval in Michigan the very next day.

Unfortunately, their vehicle broke down and after trying to get it fixed locally, they ran into Wisconsin resident, Ernie, who offered them the use of his vehicle so they could make it to their next gig.

Now, Ernie's got his vehicle back...their van has finally been fixed...and they'll be back in the area in about a week at the Northwoods Rock Rally.

Interviews

This is it. The final few days with Scott Robert Shaw before his retirement on Wednesday. Over the last few weeks, it’s been great to go back & take a look at some of our favorite moments from the last twenty years or so.

In this throwback, we’ve got a clip from 2020(during Covid) – when Shaw revealed that he was VERY upset about a certain missing item from store shelves, and another clip from a week later in which a kick-ass Rock listener was able to supply him with what was missing!

Another clip from 2020(again, during Covid) - when Shaw's barber had retired and he was getting a bit moppish.

And finally, from 2023 when Shaw decided to buy a moped and a final clip from earlier this year when we tried to come up with a tagline for Shaw like all the great newscasters.

The Monday Morning Throwback – Our final edition of the "Best of Shaw"

As we continue to inch closer to Shaw’s retirement, it’s a great time to go back & take a look at some of our favorite moments over the last twenty years.

In this throwback, we’ve got a clip from 2011 - when Shaw needed help figuring out what a "merkin" is, and another clip from 2018 about a guy who hadn't pooped in over a month!

Also, a clip from 2019, when Shaw decided to quit having his water softener salt delivered directly to his house.

The Monday Morning Throwback - Another round of Shaw clips.

As we continue to inch closer to Shaw’s retirement, it’s a great time to go back & take a look at some of our favorite moments over the last twenty years.

In this throwback, we’ve got a couple of clips from 2016 - one of Shaw telling us about Sticky Vicky, a very well known entertainer who decided to retire after a lengthy career, and another one of Shaw failing miserably at another round of "You're Killin' Me, Shaws" and then complained about the movies Brian watches.

And a clip from 2017 where a listener offers a suggestion for Shaw to get his whole family into his daughter's college graduation ceremony, where tickets & seating were limited.

The Monday Morning Throwback - Even MORE clips of Shaw

As we continue to inch closer to Shaw’s retirement, it’s a great time to go back & take a look at some of our favorite moments over the last twenty years.

In this throwback, we’ve got a couple of clips from 2014 when we debated whether or not Shaw could fit into some luggage...like a suitcase or a really big duffel bag…and another from ’14 where Brian & Shaw recapped a golf outing that went REALLY bad.

And the all-time classic Shaw clip about eating one strip of Bacon from 2015.

The Monday Morning Throwback - More clips of Shaw

As we continue to inch closer to Shaw’s retirement, it’s a great time to go back & take a look at some of our favorite moments over the last twenty years.

In this throwback, we’ve got a clip from 2012 when Shaw dropped the classic "how about some of this, then?" for the very first time…and another from ’12 where Shaw revealed a bit of nerdiness when he knew the composer of the theme from "Rocky".

And a third clip from 2013 when Shaw rapped the weather forecast!

The Monday Morning Throwback - MORE Shaw highlights

As we get closer to Shaw's retirement, it's a great time to go back & take a look at some of our favorite moments over the last twenty years.

In this clip, we've got a clip from 2009 when Shaw finally explained why he had so many pairs of pants that didn't fit him properly...and another from '09 where Shaw finally invited Brian to go golfing(even if it was out of pity).

And a third clip from 2011 where Shaw was able to show off his ability to say the alphabet backwards, much like the late, great Paul Harvey!

As we get closer to Shaw's retirement, it's a great time to go back & take a look at some of our favorite moments over the last twenty years.

She was such a special person. Our beloved Anh Pham.

Sadly, she passed away last week.

For years she brought so much life to our building and we will forever miss her.

Today, a few clips of Anh in the studio before & after recording clips for "What Did Anh Say"...a game that we played for many years.

I'll always cherish those little chats.

Back in 2014, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was sweeping the nation!

Brian had been challenged to do it from his best friend, Donut...and we did the Ice Bucket Challenge as a staff in our parking lot here in downtown La Crosse.

We then challenged our friends in Royal Bliss(Who did an absolutely HILARIOUS video), our good friend Randy Hughes from the City Brewery, and our wonderful pal, Jennifer Livingston from WKBT.

The guys in Bliss and Mr. Hughes all did their videos withing days of the challenge, but Jennifer did NOT. (she eventually got it done)

So, we called her up to see what was the deal!

Back in 2011, we had news that the marsh in La Crosse was polluted with lead from the La Crosse Gun Club many years before.

UWL researchers found high levels of lead in the sediment of the marsh, which could be absorbed by nearby vegetation & travel up the food chain, causing neurological & developmental problems in the local wildlife.

So, we decided to gear Skradie up with some hip-waders and a net & then we sent his ass down to the marsh to look for mutant animals.
