From entertainment headlines to real-world issues impacting listeners, the Rickey Smiley Morning Show covered some of the biggest conversations trending right now. The crew recapped the 2026 MTV VMAs, where Snoop Dogg hosted the awards show in his hometown of Los Angeles and helped make the ceremony one of the most talked-about events of the night, while Cardi B and Kehlani scored a major win for Best Hip-Hop. The show also revisited comedian DeRay Davis’ hilarious comments about fellow comics Michael Blackson and Donnell Rawlings, sparking a discussion about comedy, friendship, and roasting culture. Meanwhile, Taraji P. Henson was a hot topic after renewed online speculation that she has been overlooked by Hollywood following her outspoken comments about pay disparity. Henson previously revealed her frustrations with being underpaid compared to peers and nearly walked away from The Color Purple over compensation concerns, while continuing to praise Tyler Perry for recognizing her value.

The conversation also turned serious as the team discussed Tesla’s ongoing California trial involving allegations that Black employees at its Fremont factory faced racial harassment, racist graffiti, unequal pay, and limited advancement opportunities. Tesla has denied wrongdoing, and the case could have major implications for workplace discrimination policies. In addition, Money Monday offered practical advice for families preparing to complete the FAFSA, reminding students and parents that federal financial aid applications help determine eligibility for grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and loans, and that applying early can improve access to available aid. Along the way, listeners were treated to laughs, celebrity tea, sports updates, and the show’s signature blend of humor and information.
