Late last decade, Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson argued Western society had an underdeveloped sense of when the Left goes too far. There was a justifiably heightened awareness around the pathologies of the Right, he argued, such as racial superiority and malignant nationalism. But the matter was less clear when it came to identifying pathology on the radical Left. 

“When people make claims of racial superiority, we put them in a box and say, ‘You’re outside of acceptable political discourse,’” he said at Lafayette College. “But where the hell do you cross the line on the Left, exactly? Well, the answer is ‘Who knows?’ And that’s not a very good answer.”

We are less than a month away from Election Day as the hard-hit residents in the western part of North Carolina and the northern part of Georgia recover from the ravages of Hurricane Helene. What should officials in those states, and possibly others, be doing to protect their affected citizens’ right to vote? North Carolina alone has almost 7.7 million registered voters, and about one-fifth of them, over 1.5 million, live in areas devastated by the storm. More than 800,000 people voted in the 53 affected counties in Georgia in 2020, about one-sixth of the state’s votes.

Unburdened by what has been, President Joe Biden used the time freed up from having to campaign to unveil his Supreme Court “reform.” This proposal comes in three parts: (1) term limits, (2) a new ethics code, and (3) reversing the end-of-term ruling that grants presidents immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts. At a time when public confidence in the high court has dropped a bit, the outgoing president figures he can make this plan part of his legacy, as well as help his anointed successor, Vice President Kamala Harris, beat former President Donald Trump in November. It’s not a terrible political calculation, although the decrease in public confidence in the court is almost entirely a result of a steep decline among Democrats. The court’s overall job approval is still higher than all other governmental institutions save the military and police — and much higher than that of the media whence so much criticism originates. Indeed, so much of the “debate” over the Supreme Court is disingenuous, driven by people who don’t like its conservative shift and so (1) wring their hands and cry crocodile tears about the court’s “legitimacy” before (2) calling for “reforms” to “restore” that legitimacy by hobbling the court. Online, this is known as “concern trolling.”
