Steve Bannon sits down with filmmaker Michael Pack (Palladium Pictures / Manifold Productions) on The Path to Zero, the new WSJ Opinion documentary on the August 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Pack says the film took about six months and is built from commanders, diplomats, and Marines who were on the ground at Hamid Karzai International Airport.
The film traces President Biden’s April 14, 2021 order to go to “zero” troops, the overnight pullout from Bagram, the collapse of Afghan forces, the fall of Kabul on August 15, and the Abbey Gate ISIS-K suicide bombing on August 26 that killed 13 U.S. service members and scores of Afghan civilians. The last U.S. military flight left just before midnight on August 30, 2021. The documentary dropped around the fifth anniversary of Abbey Gate.
Pack’s witnesses describe CIA-trained Afghan “Zero Units” called in to clear the airport—Marines in the film say those units ran over civilians and opened fire. Pack told Just the News the United States has to face that people under U.S. command shot innocents. The film also notes roughly 30,000 Zero Unit members and families were evacuated while many interpreters and other Afghan allies were left behind.
Bannon’s segment stays with the Marines at the gates: shifting paperwork, families turned away, and the lasting psychological and spiritual damage of watching—or being unable to stop—what they believed was wrong.
Five years later, should Washington still be forced to answer for Abbey Gate, the Zero Units, and the allies left behind—or is “we got out” the last word?
