Oliver Gaadista shared that he wrote this song in one sitting for about one hour. 

He had the intention of writing a song for the 90th birthday of the Convenor of the FilPressSydney, Jaime (Jimmy) Kelly Pimentel.  He intended to write it two days before the surprise party for Jimmy but he didn’t get around it one day before the event. 

 Oliver said that before he even started writing, he knew I had to do it in Country style. He thought it’s appropriate as it tends to be more personal, simple and honest. He did it in Tagalog because Jimmy is a real advocate of Filipino culture plus he always find it fun to play with Tagalog words/phrases.This is just a simple song with two intentions. One, to introduce Jimmy to the listeners and second to genuinely greet him with a happy birthday.

The segment 'Originals Only' (Oregs Lamang) was presented by Christine Dieckmann and compiled by Andrew Russell. Presented on 4 September 2024 was the song titled "Dito Ka Lang sa Tabi Ko" by Errol Flynn Zambrano Magbanua. According to Errol, it took him 40 minutes to write the song when he was in Davao, Philippines. He further added that the "chorus is the verse itself making it much more unique compared to the songs in the mainstream music.

Eversince I started Design Talk 2 years ago, I have been on a lookout to get at least one Industrial Designer guest (being one myself). I found our guest tonight by pure coincidence. I was listening to some music in youtube, where I normally skip the ads in between songs, but this time I watched through it. It was a Breville ad, promoting their latest coffee machine and one of the people came up in the ad was an Industrial Designer called Norman Oliveria. A bit of light research (fb ) confirmed he is of Filipino heritage, so I pmed him, fortunately, he replied and happily agreed to be interviewed. Small world as I later found out his sister, Nicole Oliveria (fashion designer), was a former Design Talk guest.

Norman Oliveria was born in Mabatang Bataan. In 1989, he and his family migrated to Australia when he was just 18 months old, he currently lives in North Parramatta. Norman came from a family who works with their hands - an Uncle is a machinist, cousins in woodworking, his Dad a welder, so he had the workshop available to create various things anytime he wishes. Norman was also creative growing up, he loved drawing airplanes, cars, building and objects. These talents and skills were fortunately obvious to his high school career adviser who suggested he take Product Design at TAFE. After 3 years of Product Design at TAFE Lidcombe, he took Bachelor of Design in Industrial Design at University of Technology Sydney (UTS). I think his experience is a best example, specially to those who will be taking their HSC next month, that there are other pathways to reach your dream course/career even if you don't achieve the right ATAR and HSC results.

Norman worked for Design Momentum for 5 years, currently working for Breville Australia, his most recent work being the Breville Barista Express Impress. Norman Oliveria chats about his role as an Industrial Designer at Breville Australia, and gives wonderful advise for those who are thinking of a career in Industrial Design. Diana de Borja- Blooming Tales Sydney

Design Talk guest was super gracious to have agreed to be interviewed despite being sleep deprived, giving birth to a gorgeous boy almost 4 weeks ago. If you listen closely, you can hear him participate in our conversation.


Diana de Borja was born in the Philippines, her Dad from Manila, while Mum from Batangas. Her family migrated to Australia in 1995, grew up in Lane Cove, and currently living in West Ryde. She finished Bachelor of Interior Architecture at UNSW, interned at design studios but found the pace slow and often don't see her designs built, so she shifted instead in the area of construction and property development . Diana currently works in property development, she is also halfway through her Masters in Property Development.


Few years ago, Diana attended a terrarium workshop, it was after attending this plus wishing to have a creative outlet that she started her side business providing terrarium workshops with wine, for corporate clients during lunch breaks and selling everlasting (dried/preserved) flower arrangements at cafes she collaborates with. She plans to continue her creative side business, Blooming Tales Sydney, after her maternity leave.

Abegail Manalansan – Coffee Belt

" Do it, think later", catchy advise from Abegail Manalansan to those who wanted to start an artisan business. She further added, sometimes doing so much research may end up with analysis paralysis. Oftentimes, you have to experience failure, fail fast, problem solve, do it again, don't stop and you will eventually grow the business.

Abegail Manalansan was from Olongapo Subic, migrated to Australia in 2012, and cyrrently resides in Macquarie Park. She finished Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering at UP Diliman. She is currently working full time in the area of e-commerce and digital products at a Construction supply company.

She developed her love of Philippine coffee while growing up having her father regularly going overseas, looking for his kape barako every time he comes home. Sharing her Dad's love of Philippine coffee, she craved for it during the pandemic not being able to go back home. With Australia's well known coffee culture, she was surprised to find there was no Philippine coffee beans available here. So she decided to bring them in, naming her artisan business Coffee Belt.

One of the suppliers she chose is called Kalsada, they partner with coffee producers in the Philippines to produce quality coffee beans. Abegail, coming from a farming family, understands the plights of farmers, thus willing to pay the high cost in exchange for quality and ethical single origin Philippine coffee beans.

There are 3 interesting points we chatted in this interview - firstly training she underwent to understand the art of coffee making, and the business aspects of it, secondly, webinar she attended hosted in the Philippines to understand the process of growing coffee beans, and meeting other importers, final point is her initially assumed target market. The way Abegail approaches her artisan business with an analytical mindset may perhaps be contributed by her engineering background.

Abegail's aim for Coffee Belt is to make single origin Philippine coffee a household name, making it part of Australia's well known coffee culture. Shanon Ristow was born in the Philippines, she came to Australia with her sister and parents when she was just 4 years old. Her Mum is from Cebu while her Aussie Dad is from Melbourne. After finishing High School, she travelled, went to work at different areas in hospitality and admin work, wanting to try and experience different things before committing to a tertiary education.

Coming from an entrepreneurial family, her goal has always been to run her own business. This chance came one day when she attended a free pottery class, she enjoyed it so much that she decided to further develop some pottery techniques thru youtube videos. After a year of practicing, Shanon started her pottery business 6 months ago, calling it Nonni Ceramics.

With her love of experiencing and trying new things and meeting new people, she decided to move to the Philippines and work in their family business for at least 2 years and explore another creative journey. A week after our interview, she flew to the Philippines to begin reconnecting with her Filipino roots, learn the language and immerse herself in the community.

Lance Palpal-latoc - Cosplayer - Design Talk July 6

Growing up I enjoyed watching Superman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman but not so much with Anime. Seeing my teenage kids getting more into anime and pop culture shows, I am amused at how they remember all those hard to pronounce names of Anime characters but not the times tables (lol!) My son recently attended Supanova Expo and met up with his Aunt, Bona May Sulitas (Genesis's cousin), an avid cosplayer, it was through Bona, that he met Lance Ken Palpal-latoc, our recent Design Talk Guest. Listen to our chat to get a glimpse into the world of Cosplaying.


Lance Palpal-latoc was born in Manila to a Filipino Dad and a Japanese Mum. They moved to Okinawa, Japan and lived there for 2 to 3 years when he was just 2 years old. When he was around 5, they migrated to Australia, first settling in Bankstown then to Campbelltown where they currently reside. He mostly worked in Retail, but having just finished Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at University of Sydney, has now started a job as Graduate Mechanical Engineer.


Lance's early recollection of watching Anime was when he was still in Japan, watching Sailor Moon while waiting for his mum to pick him up from preschool. Even after moving to Australia, they would watch anime as a family. It was in 2011, in Year 9 when he attended his very first Anime convention (SMASH). This experience opened his eyes to the world of Cosplay! He started cosplaying the following year, then in 2019 started making his cosplay costume and props, either from scratch or buying some base clothing/accessories and altering them to suit the characters he was going for. Whilst Lance agreed that his design, develop, build and test skills developed from his engineering degree came in handy as a cosplay costume and prop maker, his Mum has been super supportive of his hobby, assisting him by sewing all the intricate details on the fabric. What Lance loves most about cosplaying is when he finally gets to put on his costume, instantly transforming into an Anime or Comic Book Character - a Superhero or Supervillain!
