In October, Deputy President Paul Mashatile announced the national dialogue, promised when the government of national unity (GNU) was established, would be held on December 16. The ANC has however, confirmed postponement of the national to early 2025. ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa would announce a new date for the dialogue. Former President Thabo Mbeki warned that a national dialogue should be urgently convened to give the new government a mandate. Lerato Mbele was joined by analysts Sandile Swana and Mavuso Msimang as well as the panelists, Xhanti Payi, senior economist at PwC, Simphiwe Gada, provincial chairperson of DENOSA, Dr. Mugwena Maluleke, General secretary of SADTU, Lundi Kama, EC Chairperson of AFASA and Lunga Thweshwa, youth leader & member of UJ Student Parliament.

View of the Nation: What a GNU National Dialogue Should Prioritize

A shocking 25 murders, 42 attempted murders, 197 rapes and 577 assaults with intention to commit grievous bodily harm were committed at schools. Between July and September, nearly 200 cases of rape were reported at educational institutions across South Africa, including daycare centres, schools, and tertiary institutions. General Norman Sekhukhune, SAPS’ crime registrar, revealed that 77 of these incidents occurred at schools, 15 at tertiary institutions, eight at daycare centres, and two at specialised schools. Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal reported the highest number of school-related rape cases, with 16 and 13 cases respectively.  Lerato Mbele spoke to Elijah Mhlanga, spokesperson of the basic education department and Hendrick Makaneta, Director: Foundation for Education & Social Justice Africa.
