The Masterclass: Women in 'unconventional' jobs

China’s military leadership is in turmoil after its most senior general – a close ally of Xi Jinping – was placed under investigation for “suspected serious violations of discipline and law”. Zhang Youxia is the joint vice-chairperson of the Central Military Commission (CMC), the ruling body of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Second only to Xi in the military command structure, Zhang has long been seen as the Chinese president’s closest military ally. Shamila Batohi served as the National Director of Public Prosecutions in South Africa from February 2019 until January 2026. Her term was historic because she was the first woman to hold this position. She brought to the role decades of prosecutorial experience at home and international experience as a senior legal adviser at the International Criminal Court.  Mbuyiseni Ndlozi is in conversation with Senior Researcher at the Dullah Omar Institute, University of the Western Cape, Dr Jean Redpath.
