Though overlooked, philanthropy; the art of giving back to the community without expecting anything in return, has the ability to really build a nation. Andrew Cargenie, for one, is considered the most famous philanthropist for building over 2 500 libraries around the world while building several universities along with a charitable trust which still runs even after his death in 1919. With the regressive state of the country where old school pit latrines are replaced with newer versions of pit latrines instead of functional toilets, the question: is where are South African philanthropists to bridge the vivid gaps in the country? In this conversation we want to get into the landscape of philanthropy in the country and joining Lerato Mbele to do so is Dr Keratiloe Mogotsi, Programme Director of the Africa Philanthropy Executive Education at the Wits Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment.
