Masterclass: Deepfaking

View descriptionShare

Towards the end of last year, morning news presenter Leanne Manas found herself unwittingly featured in fake news stories and deceptive advertisements, seemingly endorsing various products or get-rich-quick schemes. These incidents shed light on the alarming rise of "deepfaking," a phenomenon where artificial intelligence tools are used to manipulate images, videos, and audio. Fraudsters are now using authentic documents to create lifelike digital personas, utilising something as simple as a photograph. As the threat of identity theft, misinformation, and scams escalates, especially in the lead-up to elections, it's crucial to grasp the extent of deepfaking in South Africa and learn how to detect it in this week’s edition of the masterclass. Consultant at the African Institute of Intelligence Michael Lee joins Nhlanhla Sehume for the conversation.
