For over three decades and nicknamed “The Boxing Mecca” of South Africa, the boxing culture of East London/Mdantsane has produced no less than 20 world champions and more than 50 national champions. This achievement even by global standards is phenomenal. In 1994 East London became part of the province of the Eastern Cape. In 2000, East London became part of the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, consisting of King William's Town, Bhisho, and Mdantsane, and is the seat of the Metro. The Department of Public Works & Infrastructure is celebrating 20 years of the existence of the Expanded Public Works Programme this year. The EPWP is a national, government-driven initiative which was launched in 2004 to promote the creation of work opportunities that contribute towards the reduction of unemployment and alleviation of poverty in the country. The programme is implemented within four sectors, namely: Infrastructure, Non-State, Social and Environment & Culture. Nhlanhla Sehume in conversation with Deputy Minister, Department of Public Works & Infrastructure, Bernice Swart.
