The Patriotic Alliance (PA) is a South African political party that was established in November 2013 by Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene. Positioning itself as a viable alternative to both the ruling Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape and the African National Congress (ANC) nationwide, the party secured its first elected representatives during the 2016 municipal elections. Despite receiving only 0.06% of the national vote, the PA gained seats in key metropolitan municipalities, including Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Bay, Johannesburg, and Ekurhuleni. Additionally, it achieved success in Tokologo Local Municipality, securing a seat with a substantial 10% of the vote. The party experienced significant growth in the 2021 municipal elections, making substantial gains in the Western Cape and securing several wards in Gauteng. As of now, it holds 85 Council seats. Deputy President of the Patriotic Alliance Kenny Kunene joins Lerato Mbele for the conversation.
