What happens to a jointly owned property if one owner dies in SA?

View descriptionShare

When someone we love passes away, we often think about grief, memories, and saying our final goodbye, but there’s also the practical side of things that can quickly become complicated especially when it comes to property. If a home or property was jointly owned, what actually happens next? Does it automatically go to the surviving partner, or can it become part of the deceased’s estate? And what if there are children or other family members involved who really has the final say? We are in conversation with Consumer Activist and Director from Marefi, Elias Shamatla.
