South Africa could be on the brink of a major legal and social shift as the government moves closer to decriminalising sex work, with a draft bill now in its final stages - a move that could change how the country approaches public health, gender-based violence, and human rights. Right now, selling or buying sex in South Africa is still illegal… as policymakers work to introduce a new legal framework that not only removes criminal penalties, but also regulates the industry. But with this shift comes big questions: what would decriminalisation actually mean for sex workers, for communities, and for the country as a whole? We’re unpacking this conversation with the Media & Advocacy Coordinator at SWEAT,  Megan Lessing.
