Hanging out with Mthunzi

View descriptionShare

From church and community halls in Hammarsdale to becoming one of South Africa’s most recognisable voices in Afropop and Amapiano - Mthunzi’s journey is one of persistence, evolution and finding his sound. Born Njabulo Mthunzi Ndimande, Mthunzi started making music professionally back in 2008, recording and sharing his work independently before a major turning point came in 2019, when he moved to Johannesburg and joined Sun-El Musician’s El World Music imprint. His debut album, Selimathunzi, introduced audiences to his soulful Zulu vocals, blending Afropop, R&B and Maskandi influences. But it was his collaboration with Kabza De Small on Isimo that took his career to another level, with “Imithandazo” becoming one of the biggest songs of 2024 and earning major awards recognition. Today, Mthunzi moves comfortably between Afrosoul and Amapiano, while staying rooted in the Zulu sound and storytelling that have always been part of his music. We’re joined by Mthunzi to talk about his musical journey, his evolution as an artist, and what it means to find your sound while continuing to grow.
