Zimbabwe has approved a bill that would allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa (83) to extend his stay in power until at least 2030. Mnangagwa was due to leave office in 2028 after completing two five-year terms, but the proposed legislation would amend the Constitution to extend the presidential term from five to seven years. Public sector unions are mobilising for nationwide protests against the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS). This follows a decision to hike membership contributions by 9.8% this year, with a minor adjustment to 9.5% slated for April. Federations, including Cosatu, Saftu, and Fedusa, believe the scheme has abandoned its mandate of affordability. In 2025 GEMS implemented an increase of 13.4%, we speak to Isaiah Rangata, Organizing and Marketing Officer from PSA North West Provincial Office.
