More than 4,000 wrongful arrests were registered by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the 2023/24 financial year, leading to claims exceeding R2 billion. This was revealed by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu in response to a written parliamentary question from RISE Mzansi. Joburg residents faced a challenging long weekend without water, but the situation worsened due to acts of vandalism, theft, and attacks on water employees, causing further delays in restoration efforts for the Joburg water outage. Bulk water supplier Rand Water and distributor Johannesburg Water provided updates on Tuesday regarding their weekend maintenance operations. However, restoration timelines have been negatively impacted by multiple criminal incidents, extending the Joburg water outage. Johannesburg Water reported cases of vandalism, theft, and assault against their employees and contractors during the ongoing Joburg water outage. Thabiso Tema spoke with Dr Anja Du Plessis, Water Management Expert and Associate, Professor at the University of South Africa.

Tuesday was the final day for spaza shop owners to register their businesses or face possible closure. Last month, President Cyril Ramaphosa set a 21-day deadline for spaza shop registrations as part of efforts to combat a surge in foodborne illnesses. At least 23 children have died from foodborne illnesses since September, with KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng being the hardest hit. Frustrated foreign nationals trying to register their spaza shops say they are being discriminated against, as they struggle with the registration process. The immigrants have shared harrowing accounts of the treatment they’ve received from some municipal officials. Thabiso Tema spoke with Bheki Twala, SA Spaza shops President  and Dr Vusi Sibanda Chairperson of the African Diaspora Forum .
