South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) has reiterated its call for intensified global pressure on former colonial and imperial powers to pay reparations for the enduring economic and social damage caused by colonialism and slavery. Dirco Deputy Minister Thandi Moraka told Parliament that apologies from Western nations were no longer sufficient, arguing that countries responsible for colonial exploitation must assume material responsibility for the consequences that continue to shape African societies today.
