Phaladi Molewa’s faith in the justice system had been deeply eroded by years of unresolved tragedies that plagued his family. The murders of his brother and sister in the 1990s, both of which remained unsolved despite initial arrests, had left him disillusioned and skeptical about the prospect of accountability. Reflecting on these past injustices, Molewa had viewed the system as incapable of delivering justice, a sentiment compounded by the brutal loss of his daughter, Sarah. His reluctance to attend Sithokozile Mkhize’s bail hearing had underscored his lack of trust in the process, as he chose to distance himself until the trial began. For Molewa, the system’s repeated failure to provide closure had turned what should have been a source of hope into a painful reminder of unresolved grief and systemic inadequacy. The South African aviation industry is under pressure, with members of parliament calling for an inquiry into high ticket prices. Parliament Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition said that the Competition Commission should investigate South African airlines for their exorbitant ticket prices. Committee chairperson Mzwandile Masina said that local airlines, including FlySafair, Lift, and CemAir, have increased prices to levels that make travel unaffordable for South Africans. The committee noted that some budget airlines have displaced the embattled South African Airways as budget airlines. That said, their costs are seen as exorbitant and unaffordable for South Africans. Parliamentarians want consumer commission watchdog to probe 'exorbitant' SA flight prices

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) held public hearings on Eskom’s tariff hike application in Orlando, Soweto, on Tuesday.  Nersa has already approved a 4% tariff hike to help Eskom recover R8 billion in losses from the 2021/22 financial year, bringing the total proposed increase to over 40%.  Eskom’s multi-year plan also includes proposed tariff hikes of nearly 12% in 2027 and 9% in 2028.   Addressing Soweto residents, Eskom CFO Calib Cassim defended the application, saying it will help the cash-strapped entity to recover operational costs. Civil society movements, trade unions and political parties also made representations opposing the application. Thabiso Tema spoke with Calib Cassim, Eskom CFO.
