Unions, business butt heads over increase to the minimum wage

View descriptionShare

About 2.5 million Australians will get a pay rise after the independent panel that sets the minimum wage agreed to an increase.

The increase will see about $20 a week more go into the pay packets of workers in industries like hospitality, retail and administration.

However some workers will have to wait until November to see the increase with the panel deciding some industries had taken longer to recover than others. Retail workers won’t see the increase until September despite many employers in that industry posting bumper profits despite the COVID-19 shut down.

Today on Please Explain, industrial relations reporter Nick Bonyhady joins Nathanael Cooper to discuss the increase to the minimum wage.
