Stranded in Lismore - floods leave towns to save themselves

View descriptionShare

The weather system that caused widespread flooding and destroyed thousands of homes in Queensland has now moved into New South Wales causing a natural disaster of unprecedented proportions.

Hundreds remain trapped or missing and almost 16 thousand people are subject to evacuation orders in areas across New South Wales.

Yesterday, the regional centre of Lismore was inundated with rain causing widespread flooding to a degree that had not been seen before.

The fast rising waters left many requiring rescue and a combined effort from emergency services and the community. People are still being rescued from flooded homes today.

Today on Please Explain, The Sydney Morning Herald’s deputy opinion editor Catherine Naylor joins Nathaneal Cooper. She was holidaying in nearby Ballina and travelled to Lismore to cover the unfolding crisis before joining the rescue effort.
