Tonga Mo’unga was born in Auckland but raised in Christchurch. He spent his youth playing rugby union being a New Zealand under-16 international who played with Dan Carter in the Christchurch Boy’s High School first XV. 

He switched to rugby league after school with the Riccarton Knights club and represented the Canterbury Bulls in the national provincial rugby league championships.  In 2011 he moved to Australia where he is now based
