Talanoa Ako Series 2026 Week 5 English

View descriptionShare

In Week 5 of Talanoa Ako, we continue the important kōrero around literacy and numeracy support in Aotearoa. This week, we’re joined by Karl Vasau from Rowandale School and Oliana Eniata from St Paul’s College as they break down what the new changes mean for our students and families.

We unpack what literacy and numeracy really look like in today’s classrooms — from reading, writing, speaking and understanding language, to building confidence with numbers, problem-solving and real-world maths skills.

We also explore:

  • The new literacy and numeracy curriculum for Years 1–10
  • What students need to achieve NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3
  • The 10 Literacy (or Te Reo Matatini) and 10 Numeracy (or Pāngarau) credit requirements
  • The new NCEA co-requisite and what it means for your child’s learning journey
  • Insights and helpful tools from the Pacific PISA resource
  • How structured literacy and numeracy approaches are being introduced in classrooms
  • Why clear, consistent learning standards matter — not just here in Aotearoa, but internationally

If you’re a parent, caregiver, educator or student, this episode will help you better understand the pathway and how we can work together to support our young people to succeed.
