View descriptionShare

(interview aired 28/05/2025) Roderick "Hot Rod" MacSwain is a seasoned mixed martial artist, coach, and advocate for health and fitness in the Polynesian community. Raised in Manurewa, South Auckland, with a Niuean mother and a Scottish father, Rod experienced the blend of cultures firsthand. Excelling in rugby at Rosehill College alongside future All Black captain Kieran Read, he discovered his passion for individual sports and the world of MMA.

Rod’s journey into mixed martial arts began with a single fight that quickly evolved into a professional career, capturing the New Zealand Welterweight title, the Australasian title, and the Asia Pacific championship. Transitioning from a competitive fighter to a dedicated coach, he now runs a successful training program out of Fort Knox Gym in Grey Lynn, Auckland.

Beyond the gym, Rod is committed to improving the health and well-being of his Polynesian community. Drawing from his rich background and diverse training experiences, he advocates for holistic health practices, including fitness, nutrition, and mental well-being. His mission is to empower his family and the wider community to embrace healthier lifestyles and bridge the gap in health disparities.
