Geographically, Ngāti Kahungunu has the second largest tribal rohe in the country, from the Wharerata Ranges in the Wairoa district extending to the Rimutaka Range in south Wairarapa. The coastal boundaries are Paritu in the north to Turakirae in the south.
The Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi became incorporated under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908 on the 19th of December 1988, as Te Rūnanganui o Ngāti Kahungunu Incorporated.Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is a mandated iwi organisation with the authority to represent the people of Ngāti Kahungunu, the Governing body for all aspects of Iwi development.
We are joined now on Pacific Breakfast by Chair of Ngati Kahungunu Incorporated Ngahiwi Tomoana. Ngāhiwi has been the Chair of Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated since 1996. He has been involved in hapū and iwi development most of his life.
Ngāhiwi was the Co-Chair of the Māori Economic Development Panel, and prior to that, Chair of the Primary Sector Group of the Minister of Māori Affairs’ Māori Economic Taskforce. He has led a number of Māori business delegation missions to explore opportunities in the China market, as well as many governance roles.
