Mike Umaga was born in Lower Hutt but raised in Wainuiomata.

 He played rugby for Wellington and Manu Samoa.  In 1995 Mike went to the UK to pursue a professional rugby league career and went on to play & coach professional rugby union until 2007.

He has been coaching in the Education and development sector since 2007 throughout the Uk and Europe, currently employed as Director of Rugby at Bishop Burton College.

In 2016 Mike formed a Not-for-profit ,Pacific Rugby Players Welfare association with Dan Leo.
