Big changes are on the way for mobile users across Aotearoa. New Zealand is switching off its 3G network on 31 March as the country moves to faster 4G and 5G technology. While this upgrade will mean better speed and coverage for many people, some older phones may no longer work properly — especially in an emergency.
Spark New Zealand has announced it will block around 300 older mobile phones, mostly certain ASUS models. Although these phones can still make calls, send texts, and use data, they will not be able to dial 111 once the 3G network is turned off, raising important safety concerns. Spark says it is contacting affected customers directly and offering affordable upgrade options to ensure everyone can stay connected and safe.
To help break this down — who it affects, what people need to check on their phones, and what steps to take before the switch-off — we’re joined by Paul Brislen, Chief Executive Officer of the New Zealand Telecommunications Forum.
