Kids don't want AI teddy bears, they just want to play

Mike is joined by Louise Mansell, Clinical Psychologist & founder of Tedology, who explored whether AI-powered soft toys can support children emotionally.

Her research found that AI changed how many children related to their teddy bears. Instead of using them for comfort and emotional expression, some children became concerned about whether the toy could hear or see them, and started testing its intelligence. Many were also uneasy with its conversational abilities and being called “friend.”

The findings suggest that children often don’t need more advanced technology for emotional support. They need a predictable, comforting companion that encourages imagination, play and self-expression.

That insight led Louise, working with children and families, to create Tedology - a teddy bear featuring simple pre-recorded tummy-press activities and sensory features designed to support emotional learning, play and wellbeing for children, families and educators.
