There are renewed calls for a shark cull in NSW after a woman was critically bitten at Coogee Beach.
Shark Scientist & Conservationist, Dr Leonardo Guida, tells Mike shark culling isn’t the answer.

“Education is the best weapon against shark bites,” he says.

“Sharks can be present anywhere at any time along the NSW coast.  The state government must continue to invest in informing the public how to gauge the environment before entering the ocean, coupled with effective ‘shark-safe’ alerts like drone surveillance."

Drones are a critical component of shark surveillance but are generally kept out of the air around Coogee due to a conflicting fight path.

"While drone restrictions were temporarily eased immediately following the shark bite, it highlights the need for complementary and evidence-based solutions like beach signage, shark tagging and public education.

When we step into the ocean, we step into a wilderness that is home to the shark, and we should respect that.”
