The City of Johannesburg is well known for its contribution to the development of the Southern part of Africa.

Known to have provided jobs to Africans coming from nearby countries, the City of Gold is well documented for assisting the growth of economies in the region.

In this week's episode of our program, we take a tour of the City to find out the narrated history of this African city.

We speak to Lumka Ndlovu: Destinations Marketing Manager of City of Johannesburg, Gerald Garner: Manager at Thunder Walker and Phil Thurston: Manager – Rand Club, to who share the untold stories of the City and evoke the unsung memories of this golden city.

Celebrating Africa Week – A Visit to the Golden City

Five years after the passing of legendary Ray Chikapa Phiri, the Ray Phiri Arts Institute and Toda Holdings has honoured the works of the musician in his home town of Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Ray Chikapa Phiri played in an iconic band called Stimela.

Born Raymond Chikapa Enock Phiri, on March 23, 1947, and died on July 12, 2017, the legendary jazz, fusion and mbaqanga musician travelled the world over. 

As a token of honour and appreciation, an exhibition was recently established in South Africa’s province of Mpumalanga.

In the programme this week, we speak to people who are involved in this initiative, including Ray Chikapa Phiri’s widow, Rabelani Phiri.

We also hear from two of Stimela band members talking about Stimela’s genesis and legacy.

Understanding the Politics of Freedom

Freedom can be described in many ways.

 As Africa grappled with colonialism, most countries embarked on freeing themselves. But the question that comes is: freeing themselves from what? The partition of Africa made countries beyond the Mediterranean Sea to scuffle for Africa as a continent. This made the continent vulnerable to abuse. But how long did this abuse take?

 In the second episode of the program this week we hear more from experts about whether, or not, Africa is free after independence. We will speak to Macholoko Zulumathabo Zulu - a well- known Research Scientist at South Africa’s Madisebo University – an independent institution of indigenous African teachings.   We also speak to Elvis Nkosi , one of South Africa’s cultural activist talking about whether or not freedom is absolute in Africa.
