The founders of Book O'clock are reversing the decline in reading culture in Nigeria

View descriptionShare

Africa’s most populous country has been witnessing a decline in reading culture, attributed to poverty, unemployment and more, raising the concerns of officials and academics alike.

This prompted Uchenna Emelife, a student of literature at Sokoto’s Usmanu Danfodiyo University, to create a book club in his home state with the aim of turning this around.Emelife, together with his partners hope the book club erases the stereotypes associated with reading in the north – that it’s for nerds, for the privileged, or arts students.

We spoke to Mazeed Mukhtar Oyeleye, Book O'clock's program manager about how the club is going about creating a community of literary enthusiasts with whom they can share their passion for literature.
