Patrick Surtain II on His 100-Yard Pick-Six, and Kerby Joseph’s Super Bowl or Bust Mentality

Published Oct 9, 2024, 10:00 AM

On the latest Off the Edge with Cam Jordan podcast, Cam is joined by two rising stars in the NFL's defensive backfield, Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II and Lions safety Kerby Joseph.

First up is Patrick Surtain II, who walks us through his electrifying 100-yard pick-6 against the Raiders. He shares the instincts behind that game-changing play, as well as his thoughts on young cornerbacks like Christian Gonzalez modeling their game after his. Patrick also reflects on the heated exchange between head coach Sean Payton and quarterback Bo Nix, praising his quarterback's competitive drive.

Next, Lions safety Kerby Joseph talks about the challenges of the highly competitive NFC North, especially with the Vikings' hot 5-0 start. He discusses how the Lions are preparing to keep pace and why he considers anything less than a Super Bowl appearance a failure for their season.

He also shares how he's embracing the coaching staff's challenge to improve his man coverage skills and step into a leadership role with a young defensive unit.

The Off the Edge with Cam Jordan podcast is a production of the NFL in partnership with iHeart Radio.

Welcome on. Then it's off the edge with me, your host, Kim Jordan. We got a lot of things to talk about. I got a couple of friends joining the shows. You know, I think that we're gonna have to just start off with how we ended up losing to Kansas City, Pat Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy, John Sherman, Schuster Smith. That's a that's painful. I think there was chances where we could have gotten Mahomes down, and somehow he made Mahomes types plays, extended some drives. That's that's not what you want to see as a defense. In terms of offense, you know, we're just gonna have to we have to get more. Whatever it is. It's the season of more. We put up thirteen points. Shout out to my dog, Colin sanders Man had a miraculous interception put thirty seven yards out there. He was out there moving for a big big guy, big guy. No knee left for Roland. Shout out to my dog. But yeah, to lose the way we did, hurts Man, we're officially lost the last three games after starting off two and oh and now two and three. We got to find a way to get back into the win column. You think about what Derek Carr means to the team and how he was playing, how he's been playing even before even this game, until he was hurt, we still felt like we had a chance. Yeah, So if he's you know, whatever happens with his oblique, whether it's he's out, you know, he's back this week, he's out the next couple of weeks, it could pose an interesting situation of who's up next. Jake Hayn, Spencer Rattler. They both look good preseason, but preseason ain't regular season. But as a leader, as somebody who's been a part of the team for so many years, there's been a season where we went through four or five different quarterbacks, you know, whether that was teddy Bridge, Roger teddy Bridge Roder or you know, going to Taysom Hill, Trevor Simeon, Ian Brook, I think back to Trevor Simon, Jameis Winston. You know, whatever that combo is. You've got to find a way to win, and it has to start off with the defense. So we can't have one hundred and forty five yards put on the ground on us. That's not what it takes. You know, we have to be better and so we can be a great supporting cast. But you think about wide receivers that we have in Chris Olave, Rashi Shahed Rashi Shaheed has probably some of the most number of explosive touchdowns in the league since twenty twenty two or whatever that is. I think it's aw stat He was tied with DeVante Adams for most thirty yards plus touchdowns and that's that's a great stack to have. That being said, you know, we got Tampa Bay coming up. But before we get to Tampa Bay, you know, let's get to my boys who are coming on the show. We're gonna start off with my dog, a legacy kid himself, Pats Certain Junior appreciate it coming on in for this is Off the Edge with your host Cam Jordan. I'm sitting here with the man who's out here going rock star mode. Uh, you know, not pass certained, the first, passcertained, the second When only bring that up because you know, I'm a legacy myself. My dad, Steve Jordan, plays for bikes for thirteen years. But we're not here to talk about me. We're here to talk about the man that that's making a huge name for himself. We're talking about two time pro bowler. Two interceptions this last game. One for a honey yard return for the for the pig six past certained, the second a K A PS two.

Appreciate you time, appreciate.

I should. I should also add a second time tapping in with the pod. You know what I'm saying. That's let's say that's two for two or two years.

First time was Lesten dere Off that jone for sure.

Yeah, hey look this, you know that this time you're coming off of a hot game. That's just talk about it. Bro. You go over to the to the raiders Gardner minshew, thank you took two picks, one to the crib. I've had a pick six, but I ain't have no yak for my pick six. Boy, I got I got a whole zero off the goal line. Thank you very much. You were for a hundred piece. We had two different.

Because yeah, I went for the hunter ball man shoot. I mean during that time of the game, obviously we needed some momentum. We needed a momentum swim because they was going down there to make it a two possessional ball game, and obviously we don't want to be in that deficit, especially in the divisional game.

You know what I mean, You're trying to win the game. So at that moment, you know, I.

Just ran my keys well, seen the ball in the air and had to capitalize on it.

And uh you.

Feel me to the back to the crib, ran my block being shoot by. By the time we hit the fifty y'alling, I was in plused control, you know what I mean. I had to clear hit of grass, you know what I mean. So you know, let it be known I had the ball in the air, then score, celebrating my teammates, you know what I mean. And so yeah, that was that was a pivotal point in the game that we definitely needed. And like I said, that momentum shift was very clear.

Yeah. Hey, big time players come up and make big time plays and big time moments and that's that's that's them right there. I love that for you, bro. You know. Then then after a Sunday Sunday game where you guys win, of course, you know you got the young young and you know young in yourself, but you got both knicks. A quarterback. How is it like having a young, a young quarterback come in start and be able to handle some of the pressures. Maybe not early on success, but he's starting to grow.

Yeah, he's definitely growing amongst hisself. Obviously, the guys around him believe him. Obviously, when you got a guy back there that's that confident in such an early stage in his career, the sky's a limit for your team because he displays it every week. You can just tell that his composure, his chemistry is growing and growing within his teammates.

And obviously they got to clicking on all sill right now.

And like you said, sometimes it takes a while for a young quarterback like that to really again in a rhythm uh again and flow.

But it seems like everything's fine for him.

And obviously they're doing a great job offensively of making sure he feels comfortable and making sure he's down up the right place and at the end of the day, is winning this ball game.

So bo, he's been great. You know, I'm learning a lot from him.

Obviously, we played against each other in college for like two years, so we definitely had some robbery bruin going on because he went to Auburn and now in Taliban. You know that robbery is uh, you know, it's pretty pretty legendary. So being able to have him on my team. My mind is that in the midst of that, it's been pretty dope.

I forget that he started off at Auburn because you know, clearly, I just know when he joined the pack. You know, I'm aware of back, guys, which pack is dead or maybe it's maybe it's been revived because the're about to you know, I think like Fresno State and Boise State joined the pack coming up. I don't know either way. It's it's weird now because now Oregon's are part of the Big twelve ten.

The Big Big Ten. I don't know, it's crazy.

It's colors are crazy right now.

Bro.

Hey, but I knew bow was gonna be successful. Bro. Sometime during that game. I've seen the clip where him and Sean were yapping and Sean Payton, the head coach for you guys over at the Broncos, We're reapping at each other and both next to his ground. I said, oh, Seawann's gonna love that guy like Sean get talking to.

That's just what That's what they don't understand, you know what I mean. Competitive?

They both they both competitive at the end of the day, I mean, and they that's how they get on the same page. I mean, taxes may be fueling, but at the end of the day, as long as you're on the same page, you know you're good.

When you got an alpha and the alpha trying to figure things out, it's gonna get heated sometimes, but as long as it's coming out of there, you're gonna be all right. I saw that on the sideline. I said, Oh, I said, oh, fifty point game incoming. I said, I don't know. The world may not know, but if Sean Payton starts yapping and the quarterback starts yapping back, that means they're really about to go to get other and put something on, it's gonna get good.

Yea, yeah, yeah, the game will be really crazy, you know what I mean, really scary, right right, he.

Said, For those that don't understand, they don't understand, you know, the outside world, the Twitter, Twitter is gonna is gonna charge that thing up. But everybody who understands showing everybody stands a game, we're gonna be like, oh, like from from the class of you know, Saints two thousand and six to twenty twenty and whenever he left twenty one, when he left everybody was like, oh, yeah, that means that means the mad hatters back, They're gonna go ahead.

And everything straight, business.

Man, But uh, you know, what is what are we five weeks? Five weeks into the season. You know you're already two time pro Boiler's clearly headed to your third Pro Bowl playing at such a high level. Mister, you know, strap him down. How is your game evolving from you know, years prior to this year, because it seems like you taking it to a whole nother level this year.

Yeah. I think experience plays a good factor into that.

I mean, uh, you know, you know just as much as everyone you know what I mean, experience is a huge factor. It's definitely critical towards your game, being able to have the IQ to really go out there and slow the game down for you. And I think that's something that's been ingrained in my game so far, especially this year, honing in on film study, understanding offensive tendencies. I think the game has been crystal clear more than has ever been in my young career. But like I said, I look forward to really watch film and hone in on the opponent because you know, Lion of Scott don't lie at the end of the day and when you're really lock in and you prepare the right way, things go in the right direction for you. So I really believe that IQ experience, all those go hand in hand.

Absolutely, bro. I mean, it clearly pays off because you got guys like, you know, Christian Gonzalez saying that they model their game after you. Now, you know, like, how does like how do you how do you feel about that? Being you're still young, but you've had so much success and now you've got guys that look up to you already.

Now that's dope, man.

Me and Christian we talked a few years back before when he was entering the draft, and he's a great player in himself.

Obviously he's making players out there. It just seems natural to him.

He's a ball hawk, he could run, So I've been a big fan of his game as well. But you know, hearing that a Munshap peers it means a lot because obviously you're doing something right at the end of the day when you hear that, And yeah, I'm just looking forward to continue success and I'm just building the building blocks towards a great season and helping the boys out.

My teammates for sure, Yes.

Sir, yes, sir man. I mean, you know, we just got done playing uh, the Kan City Chiefs already turned the page. I'm trying to forget that game already. But we played Kent City. You know, that's an indivision party for you guys. What makes it so hard for, you know, to defend against Pat Mahomes versus other quarterbacks?

I think.

With him being in that tight knit group with him, Kelsey obviously Andy Reid, I think that helps a lot because they obviously got a system going. But I want to say it's just a system. Like Mahomes is probably the most talented quarterback we haven't seen, uh in a while.

I mean, it's just it's just.

Crazy the throws he could make on a consistent basis, And like I said, no matter who's out there, as long as you got him back there, you're gonna win some ball games because like that's who he is, a true competitor, a true leader, and he's just out there making plays. But and I also think like him and Kelsey, that connection helps a lot too. That's been successful for a lot of years now and it's obviously still going on. But yeah, what makes them so successful is I don't think they changed the way they do. They stayed with the same regimen, the same program, and it always works out for him, you know me and I know people be like, man.

Why these guys can't be beat?

But like you see the simplicity and the things that they do, and they do at a high level, you understand why they be winning super Bowls and stuff like that.

Man, Like they say, it takes what it takes. I still try and figure out that that that recipe of whatever it takes to get to the highest, highest platform being the super Bowl. But yeah, I mean, you know, we just got done playing them. It was like all those motions and they're only running a few plays out of all of that. You know, Like, so I get it. Look, but I'm trying to tell people, bro, Pat Mahomes is more elusive than you think he is. Like he may be he may may be built unathletically, but he's athletically gifted.

Yeah, it's acceptive, definitely deceptive.

Bro. I've seen him out run some linemen. I said, look, I think I think I thought, I think I almost had him in the backfield and he sort of slipped out of there. Even when you hit him as he's falling, he's gonna let let go a laser. It's I mean, it's one of those quarterbacks. It's gonna be forever frustrating.

Yeah, it's gonna be fun straighted and at the party, like, man, you just gotta brush that one off off your shoulder, Like man, I ain't gonna lie.

I don't know how made that happen.

But he's just one of those players, man, one of those quarterbacks that you know we're gonna talk about for years to come.

Obviously future Hall of Fame. Man.

I was saying, he's already got what two or three super Bowls? Three, he's got three super Bowls, He's been to four or five of them. I'm just trying to one. We don't hunt for one. You know what I'm saying is all you need. That's what I've heard. I'm out here still fighting. We clamor for us, but you know, super Bowl in New Orleans. Bro, let's let's get out of NFL because at this point you know that that that things can lead to a bad road. I just lost to them, and I'm not I'm not excited about it. Like I'm already flipping the page headed towards Tampa Bay. Uh. Uh. I'm gonna say Gardner minshew, I'm sorry the Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay.

Uh.

And then you know, but beyond that, let's just talk about this weekend.

Bro.

Like we talked about disappointed, can we talk about Alabama? Y'all? Good over there.

That was a tough one to come by because the last shoot probably before he was born.

Shoe, I don't know.

It seemed like a century or something like that, I know, but yeah, I was pretty surprised by it. I was pretty shocked because we was we was definitely riding the high horse just from beating Georgia and right obviously that game you probably look at it as like a cupcake game, but obviously Vanderbilt intentions was clearly different. I just they they came out with the more urgency. Uh, there's more physical at the end of the day. And that's what it takes in football, the team that wants to more any given Saturday.

So you said, you got it, That's what That's what it means.

By preparing, you can't you can't let it off the hook, you know, I mean, you gotta keep going.

But so I think the Boys gonna learn from it. Obviously, you got a.

Twelve team playoff now, so I don't think that affects their chances at the end of the day.

But I think I know what their standard is.

Obviously, they're gonna learn a lot from this game and hopefully learn that that can happen again, because that's what it takes to have a you know, bringing that winning culture, and what comes with that is you know this disbelievers. You know, obviously, lose to bandy, people are gonna start being like, oh bam, this normal, ain't that. But I mean, as long as you do what you do on a consistent basis, I think they're gonna be fine.

Right. I just got told h Vanderbilt hadn't beat Alabama since nineteen eighty four, sou Yeah, yeah, forty forty years ago.

Yeah, Bro, before before you was born.

Definitely before I was born. Yeah yeah, long, that's crazy. Hey, I feel I feel the bro at least, like you know, you guys got surprised with you, But you guys just came off of a super high wind. You know. My my cow team Bro. I fell asleep Saturday watching the halftime. We was up by seventeen. I was like, oh, I could turn this off. This game's rap city. It's ten thirty. I got working, man, I wake up. We look we somehow lost, Bro, twenty three points. We gave up twenty three points in the fourth quarter. I said, what do we.

Three or fourth quarter? That's crazy, man, that's aame man, that's name.

I said, Bro, to lose by one.

Rather like people ask me, how would you have to lose? I would hate to lose like that, like that guy hurt. That gotta be like.

A whole what that's like you get made fun of for the rest of your life. That's like the Falcons when they went went to the Super Bowl against the Patriots and was up twenty eight three and ended up losing.

Yeah, because how could you use it? You it?

You fail? Yeah man, you foul camp man. Oh well, you know that's just like I said, this makes it makes things to think about it, like, that's just how important it is to be locked in all sixty minutes this game. This game you have to fight for every yard. Yeah for sure, man, Literally it's crazy. But anyways, Bro, I'm gonna let you go. I appreciate you tapping in, Bro, I mean, you know, continue balling to much success, to the highest levels of success. You know, I hope your skills helps your team out night in every way possible, which I know it has. I mean, you take two interceptions back, I know you want for the Tuddy, I don't know how it don't Yo. So this this week, Bro, I hope you just go even crazier, even more federal.

Yeah, appreciate that you too, bro.

Hey man, my dog pass certain certified monster. He's out there going now. I mean, he likes the way the Pro Bow feels. But he won Super Bowl. Hopefully we see him there this year, Broncos. Do you know what I'm saying? Super Bowl. I'm gonna keep on manifesting New Orleans and the Super Bowl. It's in the city.

Man.

All we gotta do is get find a way to win. Starts with this week coming up next, we got Kirby Joseph. I appreciate you for coming in. This is off the edge with Cam Jordan and we back and here we are. We got we got a young up and coming gunner safety position. You know, Kirby Joseph. My dog had been out here grinding the lee. He's already got three picks on the season coming and tapping in with off the edge of pot. Appreciate you, my boy.

I appreciate you for having me.

Man.

I just want to thank God for giving me this talent and my teammates like just couldn't do it without him.

Yeah, absolutely, I mean, you know, you gotta give God the glory because without him, where will we be?

Right to God?

The facts? Bro? I mean, first of all, look, I know you from Orlando, got family out in Orlando, you got you know, the hurricane coming in. Is everybody good your way?

You know, like yeah, yeah, yeah, everybody's moving, gating whatever they needed, you know, just praying for everybody else in their family.

I know other people got other situations going on, hopefully the best.

Right. Look, I've been in I've been in a similar situation in New Orleans where we had a hurricane coming in and I dipped and still had to go grab the like make sure the family was good and come through and everything else. So it's scary times. You hope that that you know, Cat five turned to a Cat three dissipates wherever, but you never know, so major, you know, major blessings and peace to anybody who may be affected. Yeah, that's that's That's not a strong way to start that part off. You know, we want to start off with positive odds and better energy for day. I mean, uh, look, y'all, are y'all in y'all y'all in the NFC, uh North? You know your division seems like everybody's winning right now somehow, some way, you know, Uh, Vikings are undefeated. You know, you guys are are going and strong. Chicago's Chicago's got a winning records just like Green Bay. What do you think you gotta do to keep on fighting and fight for that, uh for the number one spot in your division.

I feel like we just got to take it one game at the time. That's what we're doing. Just keep doing what we're doing, and just you know, when we see our opponents, we just gotta make less mistakes and make more players facts.

I mean, are you are you surprised to see the Vikings undefeated? I mean, you know, year and year out they're good five five and oh that's a hot start.

I don't feel like I would say I'm surprised.

I feel like, you know, we're all pros, and I feel like the Vikings they got talent over there, So I'm not surprised, But yeah, so kudos to them.

Right, they had nothing to do with you y'all out here, y'all here trying to get these wins together too.

Yeah, I mean, how you guys we got we got talent on absolutely so yeah, I mean, you guys sort of took the world by surprise last year with how strong you guys came in finishing, made to a deep run to the Playoffs's what's the mentality?

What's the motive this year?

I feel like the mentality is that it takes more, you know, because I feel like we did all that and just to lose it at the last second or just to not be able to come up within those last seconds during the game.

Like I feel like we did the preparations.

We knew what we had to do, but now we really truly know it takes more because you can do all that instill win.

Man, you could trust your process, do everything the right way, and have a thirteen to three season, and then do the very next year, trust your process, do everything the right way, and have a seven and nine season. At seven and ten season, now, I mean, you know, there's there's definitely you know, it's definitely a method that you have to believe in the way you take to the game, the way you go ahead and progress. But you never know the results until you know until the final weeks where you're like were you're building a alter, you're building a locker room, you're building a team. Then you know everybody's either healthy or you see those years where sometimes you know the key guys you need get hurt and it's always the next man up mentality. You never know what's gonna happen in the football.

Season, right right, And like you said, like next man uh man talent, Like I feel like that's nothing we're working on. Like we had a situation last week where Brian Branch went down and Brandon Joseph had stepped up, and I'm so proud of him because he did real good in that game. You know, got the first his first game under his belve man, So shout out to him, and you know, now it's just like it shows the younger guys like we need everybody to win.

Like I tell him all the time, we need everybody to win.

It's just not up to the starters like we need we need our second strains, our thirst, we need everybody. So just because you're on practice squad. Just because you're on like scout team, it doesn't mean you're not a part of this team like you're a part of the Lions.

That's why you're here. You're here to help us win.

You're an integral part of this team. Because any which way this could go, spraying ankle, spraying risks, you know, whatever, whatever it is, there's got to be all right. It's my time now, you know. They can't be Oh, I I wasn't expecting this. No, you fought your way to get to the league. If you have a chance, you have to earn it each and every time you touch the field, or each time there's a chance you touch the field.

Right, That's why I tell him.

I tell them every day after practice eight ten minutes in the cold to minimum ten minutes.

No, no, lord, no, yeah, you gotta get ten minutes. You're you're in Detroit. So you play Green Bay in Chicago, which is a cold weather team. You've always believed in the cold.

Tub bleed in the Colt Colta A kep me going. And and just you said, I played the teams in the cold. I'm from Florida. I don't like the cold.

I look at you. I don't like the cold. I don't like the gold.

No, you chose to go to Illinois. Now stop playing do no cold now, no fact, Hey, these are facts. Whatever gets you here. So ten minutes in the cold man, my D line knows I'm touching the cold I'm touching the cold tub. Once a year, round playoffs with the D line the only way I'm getting in there.

Why wait?

Why wait? You know you gotta be pro. You know what I'm saying.

You gotta be pro a hot, hot tub, sauna, you know, steam room. I'm a firm believer runs.

The best available ability is availability.

Is availability, right right? Okay. Saying you believe the cold tub is gonna get you through, I love that for you because me, I feel like I played about two hundred or something games cold tubin' never helped me. In fact, I believe the one time I got in the cold tub, I think I got hurt. I said, oh, I'm never getting back in there again. That was a college like I sprayed my ankle, hey, like literally, I was like everybody was like cold to hot to the cold tub. Like a week later, I wrote my ankle and said, you know what I think I'm good off of cold tubs. I don't know what it does, but my body doesn't compute the way everybody else does. You know I'm a desert monster. I'm from Arizona. Okay, you know I'm from the heat. I went to went to California for college, went to Louisiana for for fourteen years. I don't believe anything subs seventy five.

I just like, I just like, I'm a I'm a tough guy. Like I'm gonna getting the hot tel, I'm getting the cold. Yeah, I'm always contrasting, like I just like I feel like, but I mean, everybody different. But if you're on, if you're on, if you're a DV ten minutes go to I ain't here.

Yeah, if that's what it gets you, then interception. You got three on the season already. I mean that's what works for you. I love it for you. And I'm like, I'm like, yeah, make sure you're getting that cold, tough brother, let me let me get you a hot talent, right he speaking of speaking of interceptions. Uh, speaking of interceptions, brother brought it brought to my attention that you keep every interception like every ball you get an interception, like you keep it at the crib. You bring it on a shelf. You high low that thing, like where do you put these uh intercepted ball?

So right now I got them crib then like it's like a little troph for I got them in. I got them in cases like football cases and stuff like that, just in.

On the shelf.

Eventually, eventually I'm gonna get these guys, uh, these jerseys behind me and uh and in some cases, I got a Pro Bowl jersey from mine and then Pops pops it. Pops is on this side. You know what I'm saying. He played thirteen years for the Vikings Pro Bowler. You know I got I got a couple. I got a couple of my way to but you know what I'm saying, Like I'm gonna have to eventually frame him.

I'm lazy. They got.

I just ordered a whole cause I be jerseys swapping, you know with my boys and stuff. Yeah, I got a whole and cases and stuff.

Man, I got a whole bunch of those plastic bands of like jerseys I swapped out over the years. I was like, I gotta do better.

Like I'm doing it for like my forever house. When I get like my forever house. Like my basement, like it's gonna be like the best basement.

You're gonna look over you be like, dang, you knew all them.

From I bring my around a little tit dad. You know what I'm saying.

Right, I'm in the processing now, bro, my forever home. When when it gets built out, that's how I'm gonna get them jumps frame like the next year or two. Whenever this house gets done, I'm gonna go ahead that that basement is gonna be a lead or maybe maybe the weight room. By the way, the wall gonna be stupid, but but so so the intercepted balls whatever? I heard you? And keep one, bro, What's what's up with the mas Stafford situation? Explain to me, No, no band energy in the house. That's how you keep all the intercept the balls except that one? Is it because it used to be a former lion?

Like?

Tell me? I said, wait, I said, we messed that for do the man.

Okay, we'll talk about Okay, I just say this.

I just say, huh, how PC can we go? How? How how proper? How how how proper?

I really don't be going for none of that?

Mm hmm, all right, brings me to the next situation. Does that mean are you a high level junk talker on the field.

I don't really be talking. Nobody really talked to me for real. But you know, if somebody say something I ain't saying. You know what I'm saying, I ain't quiet A gonna be quiet.

Last year, bro, Hey, look last year he was. He was on radar. I'm watching I'm watching Chauncey go, Chauncey Gardner Johnson go after somebody jaw jacket and I see, I said, you slide in. I said, oh, he's got an accomplished I'm just saying I don't do too much.

I won't do too much talking. I get straight.

We were here for the business, absolutely, betness proper. Hey, have you ever heard anybody talk as much trash as my dog Chauncey or Is there is there any one player in this league that can probably out talk Chancey man Man. He was my teammate for three three three years and change.

I mean, I feel like I feel like that's just who Chauncy is. You know what I'm saying, You just got right.

Heil. He built to get on people's skin, and he gonna find a way he's gonna.

Keep doing until he does great, because you know, like as a DV, you want to get in the receivers head, you want to get in the offensive head. So I feel like, you know, when he gets to talking like it kind of knocks people off their game, you.

Know, right and on it only only hypes him up. Once he gets hyped up, the energy gets infectious cause you're like, yeah, yeah, don't get him. Tell people like Chauncey really like one of the best teammates you're gonna have or one of the worst enemies you're gonna face, right, which one of the two?

Right, But it was like I remember when he was first here and you know, we had a joint practice with the Jacks and I ain't evenna se receivers, but he had hit this one receiver so hard, like all I have to do is just there like yo, like.

It was crazy. And then and started started talking to it like it was just amazing. Like I feel like that just brings the energy, bring the violence back football.

Right. And on the reverse side, you out there like you're just playing post safety out here being a silent killer. You're silent assassine, trapping boys up and you said you ain't talking none.

You just I'm back. I seen hey, I I was calling. I already had an incident. I already had an incident. I ain't seen nothing, I ain't doing nothing.

I yeah to to Now I'm focused. I'm locked in, okay, sir, Yeah absolutely. Man. Look I used to be a trash talker these last like three four years. Whether I don't earn too much respect. Ain't nobody talking trash to me like that no more? And I used to go out my way and now I'm just like they're like, dang, o gee, you still got it. I'm like thanks.

I really just be like, so your game, I just be like into the game for real, you know. But that's that's that.

Everybody got their own type of game, like like that's tons of the game.

Like my game might just be cooling.

Right, I mean talk about your game just I mean, how have you embraced that challenge from you know, from from years prior to now where you're you've improved your your man coverage skills, even stepping up as like one of the vocal leaders.

I love it, you know, Like me, I love to get talented because I know talleges make you better. You know what I'm saying, You're not getting better. If you're not getting you're not challenging yourself. I feel like I wanted to be complete as a safety to where I can cover down or where I could pick the ball off if it's in the coverage, or get better at my man and my tackling. Like I just wanted to be a complete all around safey. I wanted to be as versatile as I can so I could be the best, because that's all I want to be, is the best, right.

I mean, you strive for great he should strive for greatness. We strive for perfection every day. We always gonna fall short, but we can always strive for perfection. You know, would you with the with last year's success, what you guys seem elevated on almost every position, you know, just in terms of experience or or talent level. I mean, where do you where do you see your season headed towards now? Would you consider your self a failure if you don't take the number one spot in your division? In fact, let's go even further, if you don't make it to the super Bowl? Would you be like, what more could you do? What more could you ask?

For definitely.

Definitely, we don't make it to the Super Bowl, like I feel like we failed because that's the highest you can go. There's nothing beyond that, you know what I'm saying. And like I'm a team player. I'm not too much worried about Pro.

Bowl or I could. I could.

I could make it to the Pro Bowl and not make it to the Super Bowl, and I won't be satisfied, you know, Like I want to win as a team because you know, I grind with these guys, like these guys are my brothers. So it's like, man, like I'm putting an artists in so we can win, not so I can win, so we can win.

Absolutely. I tried. Look, I've tried to tell people. I said, look, I've been to Pro Bowls. I've seen I've seen I've been all Pros. I've seen all the greatest accolades you can personally, But what I want to see is a Super Bowl. I've been to the NFC Championship Game one year and then the next year, like you don't make it even as far, you know, like it's it's it's climbing back up to the top of the mountain just to see if you can reach the peak. Like that's that's half the battle, because mentally that's draining to be like, oh man, we were just right there.

And it's not like you don't put in. You don't put in the blood and sweat and tears all through ot is, all through training camp, just to make it to NFC Championship. You know what I'm saying, Like, you put all that work in to make it to the super Bowl and win the Super Bowl, not just winning, not just playing it, but win it right.

And I mean that locker room culture is real. That plays a huge part of it too. I mean, I mean, I know for me, like my locker room is great, you know what I'm saying tomorrow, Davis Tire, Matthews myself, you got a k you know, you got Derek Carr, you got leaders at so many different positions, Eric McCoy over at center on the officer side of the ball. But then, like you know, when you talk about your your locker room culture, your culture where it started off as Dan Campbell talking about he was gonna bite people kneecaps often, you know, the you know whatever whatever that was to even Jamal Williams at the time, you know, talking about some dogs to Now where has that culture elevated and evolved into.

I feel like it really evolved into accountability, you know, like we had to accountability before, but now it's to the point where it's like I'm gonna call you out because I know.

You can be great. I'm not eve gonna let you do that to yourself, you know what I'm saying.

So like like for the DVS, like I'll call out brands or branch will call me out, r T, I'll call T. A cdo call me, I'll call CD the CEO. Like there's no there's no there's no there's no like pride or I'm not gonna say there's no pride, but it's like everybody's able to take critical you know, and able to learn and to understand. Like yo, like this guy's not trying to tell me that, he's just trying to help me, you know, elevate my game.

Yeah, there's definitely pride in the game, but there's no pride in one one's personal self.

You know.

Like I think that the greatest thing I heard the other day was David talking about you know, there's the NFL, which is a winning like a win or lose business. And then there's the NFL player who has the methodology, the practice, the ability and has to go perform to curate this. I mean, it doesn't mean that you're going to win. It just means a methodology is practice enough to where your routine gives you the best chance to succeed, right. And it's like, shout out to my dog who said that. No, no, go ahead, shout out to my dog.

W But it's like it's like, really, like what I'm like what you said, Like, what you're doing practice is really what you're going to do in the game.

So it's like you really want to practice hard, and I feel like.

We'd have been doing a great job of that, like just being aware of knowing what's going on within practice.

So it's like once you go to the game, it's easy. You know, practice should be harder than the game.

Absolutely, it shouldn't be. I mean practice practice is two hours. You got the you got the individual loan that could wipe you out, and then you go to you know, those different team periods where you out there full pass smacking folks like bro, we could have just played a game if we was gonna go this crazy, we could have we could have really had something go ahead, but sure yeah, no, no, Hey, it's all you, bro, Like I really I really want to hear your mentality because when I think about our practice, I know what got me here. Now I'm seeing guys like you thrive, bro, and I want to know your mentality.

Go hard every play. I feel like, really, just never take no play for granted.

Every play count, every integrass count, Like you never know what's going to happen, so you never want to let off the guys.

You want to go full speed everything.

Absolutely. I gotta I gotta love it, gotta respect it. You know, we only get one life in this thing, and for real, you know what the NFL stands for. It stands for not for long, and that account you have to go get it each and every play, each and every down, no matter if you're playing out a position, in position, practice, squad, starter, whatever it is, there's always a chance that you can improve or just improve upon your own abilities.

Right, And it's like you never want to give up because it's not over until you give up. You know you will always get better, Like I feel like, if you're not getting better, like I always tell myself, if you're not getting better, You're getting worse. I remember my my rookie year I came in. They said I was under developed, like I wasn't as crafty as a safety or whatever. That didn't stop me. You know, I always look for ways to learn to get better, you know what I'm saying. And I ended up real pretty good like so I just never stopped. I'm always willing to learn. I'm always learned. I'm always willing to learn from people good or bad, like I'm always willing to take a bus.

Oh yeah, I love that for you, my boy. We'll keep on grinding. I appreciate you tapping in with the pod bro h. Everything that you're doing is clearly got to where you are. So just keep on winning, oh for sure. Hopefully and hopefully we'll see you in the playoffs.
