Friends of Theatre North in Launceston continue to hold regular conversations for its theatre going members and the public.

In 2024, these talks have been badged "Cinq et Sept" -  just another name for an enjoyable early evening, centered on good company and convivial conversation.

On March 21, they gathered together a panel featuring Michael Edgar, Dr Asher Warren, Jane Johnson, and Sally Richardson.

For this conversation, Stuart Loone asked the question - what was the moment their outlook was changed by the theatre.

Cinq et Sept - Theatre that Changed Me

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.

In Tasmania, Ade Ishs is having a special afternoon on Apr 28 to celebrate IJD with an afternoon matinee at the Crowded Lounge in Latrobe.

After spending his early years in Indonesia, he travelled the world for study, work and his music.

A few years ago, Ade and his family fell in love with Tasmania and moved from Melbourne to settle..... and to continue to compose and play jazz.

Ade Ishs - International Jazz Day

When a Scotsman emigrates to Australia, the mere mention of whiskey is enough to organise a gig in a Tasmanian distillery.

For Graeme McColgan, it meant having to source/borrow audio equipment. A chance meeting in northwest Tasmania to borrow some gear led to making music with two well known Tasmanian locals - Neil Gray & Bob Connor.. It was the genesis of a debut CD.... Distant Shores.

Graeme has his heart on settling in Tasmania, but for the time being is a FIFO musician catching up with The Stovies every month. 

The Scotsman told his story and played some of the music from the CD during the Long Lunch program on City Park Radio.

 A Good Riddance: The Inception of Criminal Deportation in Colonial Australia

Over the past decade, many Australians have become familiar with the concept of criminal deportation. Since December 2014, more than 3,000 people have been deported from Australia, with around 60% being returned to Aotearoa New Zealand.

But criminal deportation has a long history in Australian colonies... sometimes known as transportation.

We know about the relentless campaign the Reverend John West waged to end transportation from England but it seems the practice took hold in Australia too.

In this lecture, Associate Professor Kristyn Harmanexamines the lives of some of formerly free people who were criminally deported to, or within, Van Diemen’s Land in the 19th century.

The annual John West Memorial Lecture is organised by theLaunceston Historical Society.

The lecture was held on 17th March and broadcast on City Park Radio 1st April 2024.
