This is a short history walk through the life of Marino Lucas, the visionary architect behind Launceston’s beloved Princess and Majestic theatres.
Stuart Loone explores Lucas’s life, his architectural achievements, and the enduring significance of the Princess Theatre in Tasmania’s cultural landscape.
It's a journey through Lucas’ life and the beginnings of the theatre in the early 20th century. Designed by Lucas and opened in 1911, the Princess Theatre stands as a masterpiece of early 20th-century architecture. Its grand façade, intricate interiors, and role as a cornerstone of Launceston’s arts scene make it one of the city's most treasured landmarks.
No sooner had Lucas finished the Princess Theatre, he designed the Majestic Theatre (now the Neil Pitts Menswear shop).... and that's where people gathered to hear about Lucas’s architectural visions, events in his family's life and his curious penchant for collecting violins of great 'significance'.
Stuart Loone is Programs Manager at Theatre North.
