In this year’s John West Memorial Lecture, Archeologist Brad Williams provides an overview of his team's work with the former Queenborough Cemetery exhumations and reburials 2024-25… and the stories of history sometimes forgotten.

The project involved the exhumation of nearly two thousand individuals from the cemetery, ending with the identification of 90% of those exhumed, their reburial and commemoration.

Along the way, Brad and his team made many discoveries about how the private cemetery owners a century ago used  "innovative" ways to use the limited space available for maximum returns.

This annual lecture is part of the Launceston History Society monthly meetings - their March meeting was their 38th honouring the Rev John West. Through his writings in The Examiner in the early1800's, West contributed much to the debate on political, educational, religious and cultural issues of the day.

JOHN WEST Memorial Lecture 2026 - Queenborough Cemetery

For the last 25 years, Amanda Shepherd worked her way up to the dress circle of theatre management in Launceston.

This has been the third tranche of Mandy's working life .. the first being education, then came radio which led to her involvement in, and love of, Theatre North at the Princess Theatre.

Respected by the staff and visiting theatre groups, Mandy has now decided to take the final curtain call on her role as General Manager.

It is obvious the rapport Mandy created on both sides of the curtain contributed not only to a successful career but also leaves a thriving theatre scene in Launceston. 

Mandy joined the Long Lunch program to reflect on her working life in Launceston .... and how her hobby of presenting music programs in her spare time on City Park Radio first led to part-time on the ABC radio and then a full time commercial radio gig through to theatre management.

It is surprising where the community radio road can take you.....
