In the last episode of "Sarita aur Madam", Krupa shares a lasting memory of Sarita as she knocks at Prayas' door once again, this time with a desire to learn.

At TTE, we are very invested in expanding the notion of the field, and bring to life the lives of various people who make a field humane.

In this case, it’s the social worker who works in prison, and the deep relationships that she forms with those on the other side of the law.

In F se Field, J se Jail, we bring you four very-short stories narrated by a social worker who tells us of her long-term client and friend, Sarita.

Over the last 10 months, we have been conducting writing workshops with 5 social workers from Prayas, a field action project which does social work intervention in the Criminal Justice System. It is housed in the Centre for Criminology and Justice in Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). This set of stories developed from the prompt, "Write the description of a place of work and introduce your characters through that place."

Letters are narrated, written, and edited by Krupa Shah.

Special Thanks to Sharon Menezes for proposing this idea and putting us in touch with this amazing group of women.

The recollecting of who his mother was and how she was ostracized as a witch from the Dom community in this story by Mahasweta Devi, is the unfolding of the myth of Bayen and the reality of witch-hunt.

What emerges in the exchange between father and son, is the painting of Chaandidasi Gangadasi Bayen and her inner landscape (mann). We meet Chaandi through her son’s eyes and it is in this telling that the witch-hunt becomes more than a news report. The fictive nature allows the story to be a reflective medium, for us to feel and imagine Chandi, Malinder and Bhagirath as they navigate through all that goes into the making of a witch.

This story was originally written in Bengali by an activist and writer Mahashweta Devi in 1976.

This audio adaptation in Hindi is from the English version of the story, translated by Mahua Bhattacharya, published by Katha in the anthology, Separate Journeys.

Translated, narrated, and produced by Madhuri Adwani

The song ‘Aa Jao Sone’ is sung and composed by Astha Sharma

The cover image has been extracted from an original work by Baaraan Ijlal and commissioned for digital use by The Third Eye for its witch-hunt series.

Background voices for crowd scene by Shivam, Kulsum, Gurleen, Suman, Sadia, and Samiya

Music track ‘Dadra’ is by Zeb and Haniya

This audio story is a part of “Like Soot or Gossip: Feminist Series Against Witch-Hunting”.

Bolti Kahaniyan : Ep 8 Phulesara Bahu Ki Aankh I

My workplace is a prison. My client is the prisoner. Who am I?

There are many kinds of social workers, but the kind that works in prisons is often asked,  "Why would anyone work for prisoners?" "Is my son doing okay? Ask him to come meet me next week." "Madam, there is no vacancy in the shelter home, especially for a mentally disabled woman. Now what to do?"

A social worker spends her days going in and out of prisons, shelter homes, and courts answering these and many more questions. As the person who mediates between the criminal justice system and a woman 'caught' by the system, answering these questions, and making the system legible is a part of her work.

But what questions does she carry with her? How does she manage to see the human behind the crime? What goes on inside the head of someone who is at the heart of the criminal justice system?

Over the last 10 months, we have been conducting writing workshops with 5 social workers from Prayas, a field action project which does social work intervention in the Criminal Justice System. It is housed in the Centre for Criminology and Justice in Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). This podcast features the letters that emerged from the prompt : "If you could write a letter to anyone, who would you write to and what is it that you want to tell them?"

Letters are narrated, written, and edited by Aruna Nimse, Komal Abhishek Tawde, Surekha Sale, Kalpana Katare, and Krupa Shah.

Special Thanks to Sharon Menezes for proposing this idea and putting us in touch with this amazing group of women.

Workshop Facilitators are Madhuri Adwani, Astha Bamba, and Juhi Jotwani.

Trailer : Letters from the System |

A teacher walks the aisle of the classroom with a stick in his hand, waiting to use it on anyone who falters in their dictation test. Bhisham Sahni opens this scene of a classroom in his story ‘Imla’ where the same teacher when positioned outside the classroom changes his walk and talk. How do the structures of power change around the same teacher?

In this episode of Bolti Kahaniyaan, listen to the Hindi story ‘Imla’ by Bhisham Sahni published in the book Bhatakti Rakh by Rajkamal publication. Here, imla meaning dictation takes on different meanings when the teacher Ramdas confronts one of the students’ father who is the village head. Fumbling over words, the teacher wonders what came over him. When did the power change and how? Find out by listening to the story.

This story can be used on the field to further the conversation around power. Some of the directions that the facilitator can take while discussing it can be through these series of questions - Who do we consider powerful? What is relative power? Where do we see structures of power around us? When do we find ourselves practising our power and how?

All the stories of Bolti Kahaniyaan can be used on the field by the facilitators and mentors to start the discussions on gender, sexuality, power, violence and patriarchy. Some of these stories are a part of Nirantar Trust’s publication called Pitara and some of them are from the world of Hindi literature. These stories can be used as a tool to speak of our inner worlds and our own experiences in the macro scheme of things. When we say field, we consider everyone who is a self-directed learner or facilitator to take it to their classrooms, libraries, youth groups, communities, literacy camps etc. The power here lies in the dissemination of these stories as you take them forward, the power is with you!

Bolti Kahaniyan : Ep 7 Imla I

The easiest thing to tell a woman in a violent marriage is to just leave. But is leaving always that simple? From financial vulnerabilities to a loss of kinships, to a turbulent clash of hope and fear, to a complex interplay of love and desire, the decision to not leave are also stories that need to be heard.

In this story, a caseworker walks us through her Sunday, that day of the week when she takes her son to visit her husband's village. What awaits her there are the probing questions of neighbours as well as the calming presence of her best friend - a Mahua tree.

Caseworker's Diary is a series of audio stories, which emerged from the lived experiences of caseworkers in Uttar Pradesh, who work with situations of murder, rape, abduction, child sexual abuse, dowry deaths and domestic violence.

This series is a part of The Third Eye’s The Caseworker’s Dictionary of Violence which introduces a vocabulary around gender-based violence (GBV) that emerges from the grassroots, from those at the frontlines, within a deeply Indian context.

To maintain the anonymity of the case worker, names and places have been changed.
