NFL Network Insiders Tom Pelissero, Ian Rapoport, Judy Battista & Mike Garafolo react to Jerry Jones and Dak Prescott speaking at Cowboys camp about what the future may hold for the team and their QB. The Insiders discuss what Russell Wilson missing out on the first day of Steelers camp could mean for his stake at QB1, and they update you on Brandon Aiyuk, Ja'Marr Chase, and Courtland Sutton. Also on the show, Anthony Richardson's status headed into Colts training camp, Steve Wyche on the start of Chargers training camp, and Michael F. Florio's breakout wide receivers.
Nothing beats a training camp quad box. Dak Prescott and the Cowboys on the field for the first time today in Oxnard, California. Montrell Washington, there's a name to know at Chiefs camp as they roll on in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Aaron Rodgers and the Jets are on the field. Josh Allen and the Bills are on the field, and we are here for you. Welcome inside with the Insiders alongside Ian Rappaport, Judy Battista, and Mike Garafalo. I am Tom Pelis Sero. Six weeks from tonight, we'll be watching the Ravens and the Chiefs in the regular season opener. One week from tonight, we'll be watching the Hall of Fame game. That's how close we are to football games, So let's go. Kirk Cousins has been cleared in Atlanta. We will hear from him on his status. Russell Wilson not yet cleared for these Steelers. We'll get into that as well. We'll also talk about some of the ongoing wide receiver drama at Jabar Chase to that list that also includes Brandon Ayuk. A lot from these characters throughout the course of the show, but let's start out at Oxnar, California, whereas he does so often. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, well, he took center stage on the day that Dak Prescott and company were on the field for the first time, and Jerry was asked, among many other things, if this could be Dak's final season in Dallas.
I do not think that this will be his last year with Cowboys at all. Is there Am I being psychotic relative to Mamera? No, No, it's pretty clear. I think I want to say it if it hadn't been clear of how much we appreciate what Dak Prescott has meant to this team in a positive way, and the dup of players do play better when he's out there. He does make his teammates play at a higher level. There's no question about it. So I'm right there in line with his best with his best fan. But believe it or not, in my life, I've had a lot of things I wanted that I couldn't get because I couldn't afford it.
I'm focused on now. It's always been my message. I think I've always told you all that I'm about being present where my feet are, And honestly, that was kind of the team message and that that's what's great is from from Tad Bowl and to Mike McCarthy to everybody, that's kind of just been our message.
And so that's right.
Aligned with with my views what I want to do, and I'm gonna keep it at that and great start to camp and good start to camp, and uh, that's where my focus is. Honestly, I'm not into those talks anymore.
They know that. I've told you.
Guys, once this thing kicks off, I'm gonna do what I can to control my game, my effort to help this team win, and the people who I pay or we pay it to make those decisions and deals, will negotiate. I want to be here, but you know, when you look up, all the great quarterbacks I watch played for other teams. So my point in saying that is that that's not something to fear. That may be a reality for me one day, may not be my decision. So that's the freedom that I have is be where your feet are, make the most of it, be confident in yourself, make your team better. I love my teammates, I love that locker room. I love everything about being out here in ox and art and being a Dallas cowboy. So that's what allows me to be free and focused and understand that and time comes.
Who knows what comes. As I said, I've.
Been through a lot of adversity personally. That it's about, you know, being thankful for where you are, hugging and loving on your loved ones and taking it one day at a time and handling the rest when it approaches.
Those three players.
You may in could be seventy percent of all the money you got seventy percent of your pay roll. Now you need a little money for the other fifty to one. That's challenge, especially a challenge when you've used some of the very money that you're working with. You've used it for years past, so you probably got some of their that's not singing the blues and it wasn't unanticipate. What is a pleasure is that you are dealing with that quality in that situation, how to keep the top quarterback and how to keep on either side of the ball as he just mentioned. Add it up and you'll see about anywhere from seventy to eighty percent of your whole payroll there.
Let's welcome in our friend Jeane Slater, who is officially our first on site reporter of this training camp. Jane, I know the when I see you in ox Snard as well as when I see Jerry Jones saying a lot. There's a lot to unpack that we were officially into Cowboys training camp. But doing a little math check on Jerry, even if Dak gets sixty million a year, ceed gets thirty five, and my kid gets thirty five, we're not into the seventy percent range. But that aside. You've heard Jerry talk many many times when he speaks about Beak and basically says he's going to be here, but also I can't afford certain things in my life.
What's your takeaway, Well, I've never been particularly good at math, so I'm glad that you were able to pull that up for us, because Jerry consistently told us today he is good at math, and what he was saying was that he knows when he can afford it when he can't afford it. And while the optimistic version of Jerry would like to have Dak Prescott here, I thought what was interesting today was the reality of the situation. It was the pause from Dak when he sort of looked around.
And said, I don't know.
If I should say this, but you know a lot of the quarterbacks that I looked up to over the years, they didn't just play for one team. I don't get the sense that Dak is sitting here looking to break the bank, but he does want to get paid with the market Bears, and that is a number that the Cowboys have to reconcile with while also trying to pay CD Lamb. I will say this, Dak Prescott is very locked in. I did ask him, you know, you haven't really held out over these contract extensions.
He reminded me.
During COVID he did, but remember, ultimately that contract got done.
I then challenged Jerry.
Jones today, I said, it does feel like it's a little bit of theater when we do these things. There's a whole dout like we saw with Zak Barton last year, Azekiel Elliott a few years back, and ultimately.
The contracts get done.
The problem is in this situation, they really haven't had these three guys that are looking for the type of money that they're looking for to remain on this roster. So there are conversations that are being had right now by Dak Prescott's camp and of course the Cowboys. But I do feel like there's a piece and there is a possibility that Dak could in fact play out this final year of his deal. With that being said, I did think it was interesting that he talked that this was the best that he's felt. He says he does say that every year, But just two weeks ago he was able to take seventeen of the offensive players, including Trey Lance and Cooper Rush, so they were able to get enough volume in throw out to their receivers and really just build on that coming back out here to camp being able to build on that. So they're already off to a head start.
All right.
So I don't know if you can see this, Jane, but we got sixty plus thirty five plus thirty five. That's one hundred and thirty by by a two to fifty five point four million dollar cap.
That's a tad over fifty percent.
So if I'm the agents Fordy of these Cowboys starts, I'm going you're saying seventy percent, got I guess we're gonna we're really going to.
Break the bank here.
Ceene Lamb's still a course waiting for his contract, Jane. He's a holdout from Cowboys training camp. What do we know about his whereabouts and what he's up to.
Well, he was clearly not here in Oxnar today, staying away from the facility as he did during the off season. But that doesn't mean he's resting on his laurels or eating potato chips on his couch. In fact, he was in Houston today getting a lot of work in. It was a two hour workout, I'm told. I'm also told he's up to one hundred and ninety five one hundred and ninety six, if you can believe it. He's stronger, faster, and even leaner than what he has been in the past. He's locked in and he wants he wants to be here in Dallas, folks. But look, you've got the Justin Jefferson contract that got done a number of wide receivers in this all season, and you know, I sort of challenged Jerry on this.
I said, you kind of knew where you were going to be with this.
Remember, right before the draft, he and I had a discussion.
About why not.
You've got the cap, But you guys can speak to that. You can work around the cap number with the guaranteed money converting things in as signing bonuses. Why aren't we there? And Jerry will tell you with a little twinkle in his eye that he knows what he's doing. There's an element to this that is showmanship, it's gamesmanship. We see this from Jerry every single year. I still tend to think that this contract is going to get done. But right now, Ceedee Lamb not here in ox Start. In fact, he is still training and getting his body ready for what he does get the call, and we've seen it in the past that.
He will in fact get the contract that he is seeking.
Jane, thank you very much. Watch your back. Those cards are getting a little close. They're driving behind you while you're talking here. But you're a pro, totally undaunted by all of it. Here, I am guaranteed we will talk to you again and very soon out there in Oxnard. That's not the only expiring contract for the Cowboys with Ceedee Lamb and Dak Prescott. Look at some of the other names on that list. Brandon Cooks, of course, is the veteran wide receiver. Tyler Smith, the former first round Piska in a new deal sooner than later. Michael parsons that one's coming up. That's probably a twenty twenty five issue. They of course can extend that contract out, but still a guy who is going to get paid sooner than later. As we welcome back in Judy and Ian and Mike. Judy, you're our official Jerry Jones translator on the show, so I'm sure you watch full out.
How long it was press conference?
What are your biggest takeaways from what we heard from Jerry Jones today?
He said, an awful lot I have. These are just some of my handwritten notes that I was scribbling down while he was talking.
He talked a lot.
I think he talked for forty five to fifty minutes. Among the things he said is he likes that the team has always, as he put it, hanging around with a rim. He said he takes he's obviously not happy with how the seasons have ended without a suit, but he says he takes solace in the fact that they've had a few of these twelve wins seasons in a row. Another thing he talked about was ambiguity, which is how we described the situation right now, that there's a lot of ambiguity, and he pointed to the Zach Martin situation and he said, you know, that got buttoned up, so I can live with this. He can handle this players not showing up a camp. And then finally what struck me was he spoke to fans through the reporters and he sort of defended his management style and he said, you know, the way you're seeing this, the sort of inconsistency between behaving like a riverboat gambler and like you're guarding the national vault. That sort of inconsistency is how we got here, Like that's how he got the team. And he said, that's what you're seeing now, that kind of inconsistency. And he said, I don't know if it's going to work, but I'm giving it everything i've got. And you know, he said multiple times, I'm all in. So I thought that was really interesting to hear Jerry Jones say like, basically, this is how I operate, and I know fans are uncomfortable, but basically hang in there with us.
Well, fans, Judy have been uncomfortable really this entire offseason, mostly because the Cowboys signed nobody, literally nobody except for Michael Kendricks maybe, but literally no excuse me, literally no, literally nobody, but there's a reason for that, and I think Jerry Jones spoke very accurately today. They have a good team, they have a good roster, and the reason the Cowboys are in this frigament today, the reason why they have so many issues about how much to pay Dak and Mike and CD, is because they've drafted so well and they've really stocked this roster with so many household names who either are going to get a lot of money or have already been given a lot of money, so, you know, so much to the talk this offseason was about how they're not signing one that is by design because there's not a ton of players out there who would make the Cowboys markedly better at several of these different positions. The other thing I would say, Mike is Dak Prescott really struck the right tone here and is common. I know there's been a lot of assuming that I'll be with the Cowboys next year, and Jerry jonesig, well, you know, I think he'll be with us.
It's likely not his last season.
Dak Prescott essentially saying, we will see a lot of great quarterbacks have played for many other teams, and if you want him to stay you have to pay for that, and that is one reason why his leverage is unbelievable at this point in his career.
And anytime you get something like this, the next question becomes, what's the effect that this is going to have on the entire team this upcoming season. I don't get a sense that it's really going to be a problem. I mean, Dak Prescott has banked enough money over his career. It's not like he's nervous, like he's playing for his future no matter what happens other than an injury, and we're not wishing that on Dek.
There's some wood here that will knock on for you there, buddy.
Other than an injury, it's not going to be an issue where his value is going to diminish. Whether it's from the Cowboys or somebody else. He's going to get a big old bag of money for somebody else, So it's not a financial issue. And then talking to people around Dak, it doesn't seem like he's nervous at all about the financial actual end of things. But it's also about delivering in the postseason and not just him, this entire team. No, that's the thing that I think him coming into the season if that is going to hang over his head potentially, again, I don't get the sense that he's any more nervous about that than he is about the money he's loose. He feels like he's going to have a good season, he feels like he's going to have put up number. So I don't think and I don't think that the Cowboys are concerned that if this contract thing does not get resolved at any point during the season, that it's going to have a negative effect either on Dak Prescott or on the Cowboys if they don't advance into the postseason where they want to get to.
It'll be for other reasons. I believe it might keep me four Dak started banking that money. He played for basically two million dollars in twenty nineteen on the last year of his original fourth round rookie contract. He played again the following year for thirty one million dollars on the franchise tag. What he's making now, obviously is substantially more than that, And even though he got hurt back in twenty twenty, he's still ended up with a monster contract. So a lot of reasons for him to feel not just financially secure, but also like, what's the worst that's going to happen here? As long as I play at the level that I know I can, I'm going to get paid one way or another. Russell Wilson's gotten paid during his career, just not by the Steelers.
At this point.
They got him for the minimum, with the Denver Broncos continuing to owe Russ a lot of money here for twenty twenty four. No Russell Wilson, though on the field on the first day of Steelers' training camp. He was held out because of calf tightness, which of course then allowed you know that other quarterback who started a lot of games in training camp justin.
Fields to take the field. Ian.
We have heard Mike Tomlin repeatedly say that Russell Wilson is in the pole position. Tomlin reiterated this week nothing has changed, but these are exactly the type of openings for a guy in justin fields, who we know any time he's on the field in any setting is a highlight waiting to happen.
First of all, I don't think it's the pole positions. I think it's just pole position, like prom. You don't say the prom is just prom anyway, you're right, and I think for look, the health situation for Russell Wilson is really fine. It's a sore cap, woke up not feeling great today. He's considered day to day, could practice very soon health wise, this is no issue at all. But that's not really what we're talking about here, and you kind of alluded to it. Russell Wilson needs to be careful if he can in any way control this. He needs to be careful because this really is how it happens, right. I mean, Justin Field's went out there today, sounds like it was pretty impressive. There's a throw to Van Jefferson that everyone's been talking about, and Justin Fields as a thrower, as a athlete, there's a lot of really impressive things that he can do. Obviously, some make consistencies last year, of course in the last couple of years, but he really can show what he can do, especially when given the opportunity. Russell Wilson has to be careful because you open the door just a little bit and you let Mike Tomlin and the Steelers offensive coaches think, ooh, Justin Fields can show us a little bit. That's how it happens, and that's how momentum build. So obviously Russell Wilson doing what he kind of get out there, but it certainly is important that he does so at a very fast pace.
And if you're wondering why our angle on that was a camera phone like a mile from the field. Media can't shoot Steelers practice, but the fans up on the hill there in Latrobe, they can get the shots. We can then use it and we can show you behind the scenes of exactly what we're happening. Wide receiver mike has certainly been a position that a lot of people have talked about with the Steelers because they trade away Deontay Johnson in the off season. They still have George Pickens, but god night, you got Van Jefferson, who of course made that play today in practice, but he's bounced around between several different teams. They drafted Roman Wilson. Omar Kahn spoke to the media today and certainly didn't give the indication that any deal to make perhaps land one of those Discrona wide receivers from elsewhere anytime soon.
I believe the quote was quote nothing going on right now with regard to a trade for a wide receiver. My understanding is they at least investigated the possibility of trading for Brandon Aiyuk around draft time or before draft time, and the forty nine, as they did with all teams, shut that down, So it was never really a thing.
But doesn't hurt to ask.
It doesn't hurt to call around and see what the price would be potentially for one of those guys. So I don't sense that they would be in it for him anytime soon, even if the forty Niners did open it up. So yeah, I think right now you're looking at the Steelers going forward with what they have on the roster and the confidence that they have in those guys, and Arthur or Smith, the new offensive coordinator, certainly will lean plenty on the ground game as well. So the hope is you get that running game going you can work off of that a little bit. I mentioned Brandon Ayuk, let's go out to Santa Clara. Let's not actually go out there, but let's talk about it. Ayuk not practicing those standing alongside general manager John Lynch. While Lynch was watching practice from his post position. I believe he watches it from where the safety would be, which makes sense because he was a safety in the NFL, so that's how you watch practice and was standing there alongside with him. So no indication that we are imminent with regard to a deal there. Kyle Shanahan made it clear they know that it's a hold in. He says his best and his neck is hurting, but we know it's a hold in and they were expecting that.
So we'll continue to keep.
An eye on that and see if the ice is thawing in any direction on that one. And then you got another wide receiver sitting out, Jamar Chase with the Cincinnati Bengals not practicing on day two of training camp.
Mike Brown, the owner, making it clear.
They're going to do everything they possibly can to get that deal done for Chase. We talked about Cede Lamb earlier, Jamar Chase, CD Lamb. Who wants to go first? Which one of you guys wants to be the one? You know you're always afraid if I do a deal then the other guy jumps me. Mind that one of these guys got to go and do it. And it's going to be right around that number that justin Jefferson got at thirty five million dollars per season.
We'll see if it's on either.
Side, and we'll see which guy winds up first, second, or third in that race.
This has been the summer of wide receivers seeking and in some cases getting new deals. One such wide receiver, the Broncos, Courtland Sutton, did get an adjustment on his contract. Sutton was not there in the spring. He wanted a new deal. The Broncos did not end up giving him an extension. What they did do, from I understand, he has added one point five million dollars in new incentives that can take him to a maximum fifteen point two million dollars this year. He's one of their core leaders. He did show up on time to training camp. So now a little sweetener from a guy who is certainly hoping can bring along bow Nicks or whatever young quarterback ends up being their starter. We know what young quarterbacks can end up starting for the Colts. It is Anthony Richardson. No restrictions on him as training camp begins when it comes to the regular season. Shane Sticken sure doesn't make it sound like there's going to be restrictions on Anthony Richardson running with the football either.
Well, I think it's exciting because the playbook is open to everything. You know, you got a quarterback that can do everything. You can throw it from the pocket, he can get out of the pocket, he can run the football, and you got Jonathan Taylor, who's one of the best best backs in the league. And to have both those guys in the backfield is going to be critical for our success.
You know.
You know people ask this to a lot. It's just like, hey, how are you gonna limit the run game? And I kind of think, like, shoot, are you going to limit Steph Curry from you know, shooting three pointers? Well, that's one any strengths, right, So we're not going to get away from that.
That's what he does well.
So difference of course being Steph Curry doesn't get blasted when he shoots a three pointer.
Draymond Green's on his team.
Judy, when you talked about Anthony richardson the injury risk, we know four starts last year, three injuries. What do you make of what Shane Stiken is saying there and what this offense.
Might look like in twenty twenty four.
Well, we remember we didn't really see much of what this offense could look like last year because Jonathan Taylor and Anthony Richardson were only on the field for three snaps together all season. Anthony Richardson only played four games because of injuries, but in those four games, in the first three games, he scored a rushing touchdown in each of his first three starts. So they're not going to limit the run game. Anthony Richardson calls the run one of his superpowers. But he did say he knows he's got to be smart about when to run. He knows he has to take care of himself. He said he knows he has to take care of himself for his teammates. He also said he thought it would help that Jonathan Taylor is there. Obviously having an all pro running back would help quarterback, but he thought that would help. Again, these two really were not on the field at all, so we haven't seen what Shane Steichen's offense has in store for both of them. But you saw Anthony Richardson walking into camp there, you saw the size of him. Yes, he took some blows. He can absorb a lot of blows. He is a big kid. They are not going to tell him not to run.
All right, do not move. It is an exciting week.
We got a ton more to come here on The Insiders and you know what you know why?
Because football is back.
Celebrate by watching his teams across the league take the field for training camp. Back Together Weekend presented by YouTube TV. Catch the action on NFL Network, NFL Plus, ABC at ESPN. Go to NFL dot com Slash Back Together Weekend for more information. Subscription required for NFL Plus. You know who else is back? Brian Baldier is back. He's got a breakdown on the Philadelphia Eagles team that he.
Knows very well. Baldy and Ian Rapport also.
Made an appearance in Eagles camp today.
They break it down next on The Insiders.
Welcome back to the Insiders, where I spent the day at Eagles camp watching Jalen Hurts do things like that.
He looks good, he looks sharp.
The practice was energetic and there was a whole lot of running, which, if you know anything about the way that Nick Sirianni coaches, that is something that is not by accident. Let's bring in our good friend Brian Baldinger, who was not hanging out at the Eagles with me today, but is there plenty of times in Baldy, we know how good Jalen Hurts is, we know what he can do to carry this team in the reality is this offense the way it's put together. Everyone's under contract basically for two years. This offense is going to be together. The defense is a little bit of a different story. They've kind of, like under the radar, remade themselves. Obviously they have no fletch, Brandon Graham is going to retire after this year. They kind of reshape themselves. What do you see from this defense? I would say on the field, and then leadership wise as well.
Well. I mean Vic Fangioe spoke today.
I'm sure you listened to some of it ian and he just kept bringing up one word.
There's a lot of newness.
There's new players, there's new schemes, there's new coaches.
Like it's all new.
And so you know, when Eagles won a Super Bowl back in twenty seventeen, James Horst was a defensive coordinator. Then they had tremendous depth on the defensive line. And Howie Roseman, to his credit, really believes in developing and having depth where you can just wave you know, eight or nine guys through, you know, on any given Sunday, if any how many they dress.
And I will say that at.
This point, right now, I think they feel pretty good about their starters.
I think there's some questions about the depth right now.
They bring in Bryce Huff to replace this on Reddick and Vic Fangio said, look, he's never been a full time starter. He's got to play the run. I don't know if he could play the run was what he said today. He's got to show Mayken. You know, Jordan Davis has struggled ian his first two years. Staying in shape, staying healthy has not been very productive. They say he's in great shape. They say his conditioning is better. I mean they said the same thing last year, and he didn't have a very productive season. He can wow you in practice and any scrimmage and at times any game because of his size and power, he hasn't been able to do that consistently. You know, Josh Wett is always going to be able to pitch count just taking care of him. But I think behind it, you have Brandon Graham in his fifteenth year, you got Milton Williams.
There is no Fletcher Cox.
I think, you know, they got to see what Nolan Smith, who was a former first round pick can do it his second year. But this defense, make no mistake about it is built around their front floor. And they got to show me right now that they got eight guys out there that can really get after the quarterback, effective quarterback, shut down the run. And then you can talk about the linebackers that it was a big competition. You could talk about the corners, who's going to line up, but I think right now, Ian, they got to get their front established and they got to know that they're going to be strong upfront.
Man.
Then, for sure, tons of questions answer for a team that started out so well last year, obviously struggled at the end. This is a big year, huge year in Philly. Obviously look forward to seeing a play out. Baldy, thank you very much for hanging out with us on the Insiders. We learned a little bit today about Kirk Cousins being fully clear to the manage him a little bit, but fully cleared after that Achilles deal. Tr that was a positive. We are going to hear from him himself tell us all about it coming up next on the inside.
Still going to take some getting used to seeing Kirk Cousins wearing the number eighteen in an Atlanta Falcons with what appears to be a GoPro camera on his helmet that we got going there. Well either way, Cousins just happy to be out there coming off that Achilles stair.
Obviously, in my situation, it's just great to be moving around at football cleats again and feeling stronger, being able to compare it to six weeks ago. I feel much more athletic and much less you know, pain, and so it's just exciting to be back in it and expecting to be able to you know, practice full go here and you know, have him forbid there would be a setback, you know. Outside of that, I feel ready to go and that's exciting because it has been a long journey. So you know tomorrow we'll be able to pick up the tempo a little more and can't wait for that.
Welcome back to.
The Insiders Town Pellicero, joined now by Steve White. Steve, we know Kirk Cousins going to the Falcons fully cleared coming off that Achilles stair.
What's the plan though for him through the course of training camp.
Here first of Tom referring to the GoPro on the helmet.
Can Kirk Cousins operate it the guy who the big dad shirt guys, he that technically savvy.
But to get to your question, No, what's going to be the way for kir puts in the computer Kirk smart, but somebody else takes somebody else is doing that and they got everything they need.
But the plan for him, Look, this is on schedule. They would not have signed Kirk Cousins to a guaranteed one hundred million dollars if they knew he would not be clear or close to being medically clear by by training camp are closer to the first.
Game of the season. So what they're gonna do.
He's going to participate in everything, but there's modified reps, and typically when you hear modified reps, that means keeping players out of full team drills. That's where a lot of inavertent contact tends to happen. There might be something where he needs to escape where he's not quite ready, so they'll probably keep.
Him out of some of those.
The intriguing thing is going to be tom is when they get to the joint practices with Miami Dolphins before the first preseason game, how much action he's going to get there in team drills. That might be the first real litmus test, and you know Cousins is probably going to push to participate in those. Because Kirk Cousins did ask head coach Morris about playing in the preseason, it was told emphatically no.
So Tom, you know what that means.
We're gonna see a lot of first round draft pick Michael Penni's playing in the preseason.
We're probably gonna see that anyway.
So again, if Pennix goes out and starts flinging the ball around, it's looking good. The fan reaction is, oh, we got to get Pennis in there. Pennis in there. So you can only imagine that head coach Raheem Morris after every preseason game is going to have to start his press conference off by saying, Kirk Cousins is our starting quarterback because you know how excited we get about the new shiny toy, like they go bro on Kirk's helm.
Well, they knew what they were getting into when they drafted Michael Pennick six weeks after giving Kirk Cousins all that money, Steve, Thank you very much. Kirk Cousins turns thirty six next month. Bryce Young turned twenty three years old today, Happy birth date. To the number one overall pick in the twenty twenty three NFL Draft. There's a lot of money you get when you're drafted number one overall, But is there anything you don't have, like for your birthday?
Bryce, I'll be hot.
I'm not like a huge birthday guy. To be honest with you, it's more of like a I'm very like. It's a humbling like, Okay, I made another year, like I'm blessed to be here, not like a big like I want this, I want that. Also, I'm in a blessed situation. There's honestly nothing that I'm like, Oh, I really really want this. I wish I could like I'm I'm I'm in a blessed like set of circumstances. There's not really anything I really want that I don't like have in some sense, so like I can't do it today.
It's for sure, Bryce Young Sam is like a lot of fun to shop for on his birthday. Let's welcome in Cameron Wolf through the conversation. Now camp everything's different for Bryce Young. Let's be perfectly honest. There's a nightmare of a rookie season for a number one overall draft pick from so many different angles, from the coaching to the scheme to the players around him. Absolutely nothing went right and it seemed to affect him. You he did not look like that guy they drafted number one. Canalis comes in. It's a new system, they got different parts around him. What are the expectations for Bryce Young in twenty twenty.
Four, Well, Tom, first, one of Bryce Young's more unfortunate twenty third birthday gifts today was a very rainy practice and the defense did not take it easy on him. They won the day. But as far as expectations, the Panthers are treating this as a new rookie year in a way for Bryce Young. As you mentioned so much failure in year one with so many different coaches in his ear and so year two of course redemption for Bryce Young, but also a restart. And you mentioned head coach Dave Canalis. I'm told his positive and confidence energy is rubbing off on Bryce and his energy around the building.
And a couple of cool nuggets I learned about Bryce.
He and Andy Dalden took their receivers as Calie to train and work out this summer, and Bryce has also been talking to Cam Newton, the former Panthers MVP, who was the last number one overall pick here about how to handle the pressures that come for this position. He also said year two for him is about urgency, not pressure. And one example of how Canalis is trying to push Bryce to get the most out of them came in today's practice.
There was a reporter after practice.
That was complimenting Bryce's success for passes. Canalis agreed, but also said Bryce was too streaky today. We need him to be more consistent, and so they're pushing for more for their young quarterback, and unlike last season, there's no proclamations for winning the NFC South. This year is about development for Bryce and this young rebuilding team and tom one stat that I keep an eye on this year, Canalys has talked about two point seven seconds or less for time to throw for Bryce Young. That's the time you get the ball to when it leaves your hands, and that's important because it helped protect him. He got sack sixty two times last year. Last year he was at two point nine seconds. That was thirty third among quarterbacks. Two point seven would put him tenth, and so that's a stat that they're really focusing on to try to get that next level of Bryce Young and Tom we're talking about back together Saturday and weekend. I'll be down in Carolina Saturday. I can't wait to see Bryce Young's development and in particular, how he's working with those new receivers Deontay Johnson Xavier Lagette. I'm told right now he's developing an early chemistry with Johnson, who expected to be his top receiver playing the extras.
Here, Cam, thank you very much. Talk to you again soon.
Forty five days until the Panthers opener at New Orleans and just four days until the return of Good Morning Football. That's right, Kyle is back, Jamie's back, Peter's back, Achbar and Sherry now joining the party. New time slot eight to ten am Eastern Time beginning to this coming Monday, July twenty ninth. You've been waiting for it. The gang returns. I will be up early watching on Monday. Will George Pickens be watching?
It?
Might have some other things going on, although the Steelers usually practice in the afternoon.
He's got some time on his hands. Does George Pickens make Michael F.
Florio's metal stand for Fantasy wide receivers? Florio is the best you don't want to miss this next on the inside, we're two for two since Chargers Camp opened on having a Jim Harbaugh social element in the show. Today it's because and if you really squit right there, you can see he's wearing cleats. Why is Jim Harbaugh the head coach of the Chargers where he cleats on the field? Why anything really with Jim Harbaugh? A lot of excitement there at the Bolt. You know what else was at the Bolt today? Our guys, Steve White, she joins me again here Tom Pilaicero on the Insiders.
You saw it.
It's a new era sieve for the LA Chargers. What was your big takeaway out of the day.
Yeah, great new facility too.
I mean also, if you notice the players are wearing their game uniforms even though they didn't have pads on. Jim Harbaugh wants players come game day to feel as natural as they felt working all week. So that's something you noticed there too. First off, in terms of the on field stuff, Justin Herbert is clearly in command of Greg Roman's new offense. They worked a lot on deep balls. Today's some intermediate catching go routes as well. Now the defender's got the ball on the hands and the secondary and the line of scrimmage. That's something that they're going to clean up.
Now. We know that the.
Chargers want to run the football, that's the identity of Jim Harball and Greg Roman, but they're going to have to throw it as well.
And that's where the question is where the Chargers come in. Who are going to be their key skilled position players. At running back You've got Gus Edwards and JK.
Dobbins coming over for the Ravens, but Dobbins missed almost all of last.
Season with an achilles injury.
Isaiah Spiller and a rookie Commandie Vidal also in the rotation that's got to be worked out. Same at tight end, is going to be Hayden Hurst? Is it going to be Will Disley who comes over from Seattle, Donald Parhum and then of course wide receiver that's the big question. You've got Quentin Johnson, the first round pick from last year coming over, Josh Palmer, DJ Shark.
So these are things is promising as some of the changes are right now with the Chargers.
These are what has to be sorted out, and again it's going to take time as Roman and players said today, So they get into pads and established the physicality that they want establish before they really can find out who is going to be doing what and how much good stuff.
Steve talked to you again soon here justin. Herbert, by the way, came in number seventy five on the twenty twenty four NFL Top one hundred player rankings, and that Top one hundred player countdown continues as the Dolphins took over the sixties and this year's list with five representatives capped by touchdown Monster Raheem Moster coming in at number sixty. Rahem Moster one of the fastest guys in the NFL. Does he have Olympic speed? Weight have to find out these guys, though, definitely do as you look at some of the notable NFL Olympians over the course of time, none greater, of course than the great Jim Thorpe. The opening ceremonies for those games in Paris is tomorrow even though they've already started playing soccer and other stuff. It's never quite made sense, like, hey, we're going to start the sport and then we're gonna have the opening ceremonies after that. Whatever, we'll catch it whenever it's on furnament, our guy, Michael f Florio or fantasy expert, as I try to make this turn here, Michael, Alright, so we're gonna have the podium right at the Olympics in every single event. You're the fantasy guy. So let's talk breakout wide receivers. Here is fantasy drafts begin. If you're talking breakout wide receivers, who is your bronze medalist on that podium.
Dalil Shakir from the Buffalo Bills.
And you look at last season, Josh Allen and the Bills started to trust Shakirir more down the stretch, and.
I mean, can you blame them?
He posted the highest catching by a wide receiver in NFL history last year, he led all receivers in Fantasy points per opportunity and no team has more wide receiver targets a caated then the Buffalo Bills. In fact, Shakira is the only wide receiver on the roster to catch a pass in a game from Josh Allen. So the familiarity with him being a good underrated player, I think is the perfect storm for him to break out this season. And you could get him as like your wide receiver five in fantasy drafts right now.
All right, let's go to the silver medal here, Michael, give me, give me a name. Do you think another one of those breakout players a little bit higher on the podium.
Marquise Brown.
Look, Marky's Brown can stretch the field with the best of them. We saw him do that with Lamar Jackson. We saw him do that with Kyler Murray. And now he gets his best quarterback that he's ever played with, because well, Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback on the planet right now, and the Chiefs were clearly emphasizing adding more speed and downfield ability into their offense.
They got him.
They went out and got Xavier Worthy in the draft, and I believe that Brown is the best field stretcher Mahomes and the Chiefs have had since Tyreek Kill. I think we're going to see the deep ball back in their offense this year. We don't know what's going to happen to Rashid Rice. The Chiefs tend to ease rookies in a little bit slower, so maybe that happens to Xavier Worthy. Brown could be the wide receiver one for the Chiefs from week one on, and if he stays healthy, I think he has wide receiver one upside for fantasy purposes as well.
Right now in year six of Hollywood, Brown b one of Florio's breakout wide receiver candids. All right, let's go to the top of the podium here, Michael, your gold medalist for Breakout wide Receiver candidate for twenty twenty four.
You might have noticed I like wide receivers who could win downfields for fantasy purposes, and George Pickens does that with the best of them. Last year, he was I believe, led the league in yards per catch.
But the Steelers quarterbacks, let's be honest, they kind of held him back a little bit.
Russell Wilson has been a far better deep ball thrower over the last two years compared to all of the Steelers quarterbacks combined.
His EPA is like thirty times higher.
On those passes.
In fact, Courtland Sutton had the highest catchable target rate of any wide receiver who saw consistent downfield volume. And we saw the best of George Pickens last year when he was paired with Mason Rudolph Russell Wilson. Just a little bit better, I would say, and especially has a better deep ball. So George Pickens gives you wide receiver one upside and you get him at a wide receiver three cost.
On draft night.
I always feel bad for the fourth place finishers in Olympic events, like you trained for four years and then you're that close to in the photo and totally forgotten forever. Who's your fourth place finisher in the breakout wide receiver rankings?
I think it's Milik Neighbors, and don't worry. He has plenty of time to get in the top three in future seasons. But he can just do it at all. He could stretch the field, he could win after the catch. He is a threat to go the distance anytime he touches the ball, and I believe the Giants are gonna build this offense around him, so I don't have any volume concerns and infect Since twenty ten, there have been eight wide receivers taken as a top six pick in.
The NFL draft.
All but one of them returned wide receiver three values for fantasy, and over half of them were a top twenty five wide receiver, so very high ceiling for Elik neighbors. Even with a quarterback that you might have some concerns about.
You see him every Thursday here on the Insiders.
Nobody better in the fantasy realm than our guy, Michael f Florio. Thank you very much. You also sign up right now. I know you already have Michael with other people. NFL dot com slash Fantasy leagues forming right now, get after it.
