Published Aug 16, 2024, 2:22 AM

NFL Network Insiders Tom Pelissero, Ian Rapoport, and Mike Garafolo discuss top news stories from around the NFL including Vikings Rookie QB JJ McCarthy out for season after surgery repairing torn meniscus, plus Russell Wilson taking majority of snaps in practice ahead of week 2 preseason game against the Bills. Jeff Chadiha reports on Chiefs and how the Texans are preparing to build of 2023 success.  Brian Baldinger breaks down the rookie QB’s preseason performances and Michael F Florio reveals which fantasy players will biggest winners and losers on teams with new offensive coordinators.

Welcome Inside with the Insiders, presented it by an Arbor Freight alongside Ian Rappaport and Mike Girafolo. I am Tom pelisserro We got a ton to pack in to this show. We got Russell Wilson who has taken first team reps finally with the Pittsburgh Steelers. What does it mean for that quarterback competition? We will certainly dive into that. Michael Leflorio, our instant fantasy expert, is going to be here talking about some of those star players you might be thinking about taking your fantasy draft. They might have a new coordinator. Who are the winners and losers in some of these new schemes. We will certainly dig into that. And our guy Baldy also is going to be here to talk about some of the rookie quarterbacks and what the Minnesota Vikings are going to do now that their rookie quarterback is done for the season. But we begin with some breaking news that Ian Rappaport brought to you just a few minutes ago. After literally years of looking for a veteran pass rusher, the Atlanta Falcons have landed one. It is Matthew Judon, who had gone back and forth on and off the practice field for weeks with the New England Patriots. He wanted a new contract. Nothing done on that front yet Ian but Judon is headed to Atlanta for a twenty twenty five third round pick Elsmore.

At long last, the Atlanta Falcons get a big time pass rusher they have coveted for I would say more than a year. Going back to Montes Suet, they certainly were in that deal, Hassan Redick. They were in that deal. Didn't end up for a variety of reasons with either of those guys. And now get Matthew Judon, the former pro bowler, big time sack master for the New England Patriots, who was in PROLD and I would say several controversies in New England. There was the situation with Drawn Mayo on the sideline eventually left practice. It was kind of overblown, but it was still a thing. Mostly, he wanted a new contract set to make less than seven million dollars this year because money from this year was move forward in his contract. The Patriots had extensive talks with Judan to try to get a deal done. In the end, they could not get a deal done for his contract. They did get a deal done to trade him to the Atlanta Falcons. It is a twenty twenty five third rounder going to Atlanta. They had some injuries at that position, they shore up that and the Patriots simply move on with an eye to the future.

Falcons ef Kirk Cousins this year.

Michael Pennix Junior is certainly the guy for the long haul. But this is a team in a division that is up for grabs here. I mean, somebody's got to go up and win the NFC South. So they obviously believe they can be competitive, which you give up the third round pick, but you also say, hey, that's going to be a late third round pick because we expect to be making the postseason this year. So that's part of the thought process for the Falcons on this one. And go back to draft night, we all sat here and said they need an edge rusher, they need an edge rusher. They're going to take one of these guys at number eight overall. Well, they took Pennix and then if you remember, our Steve Weiss then reported the next day that they try I had the trade up for Laatu Latu, We're unable to do that. So they use some of the capital that maybe they would have included in that deal to now get Matthew Judeon. It's more of a short term fix. It's not like you got an edge rusher for the next ten years. But again, this is a team that expects to compete right now and they are going to do that with Matthew judt On.

The deal is not done.

I don't know diego apples to apples with Hassan Redick here. Remember that deal with the Jets. We talked about that a couple of days ago. How that wasn't done when the trade was done. Obviously everyone comfortable here that something will be addressed in the near future and for the very short term, Judah shows up and he's a part of the Falcons defense.

A pretty wild off season for the Atlanta Falcons in so many different ways, of course, at all begin back in March when they signed Kirk Cousins to that contract for one hundred million dollars guaranteed. He was replaced in Minnesota by two guys, Sam Arnold and the number ten overall pick. JJ McCarthy. Will be the first first round quarterback in the Common Draft era to miss his entire rookie season because of injury. He underwent surgery this morning with the team physician, who determined, as expected, a full repair of the meniscus was going to be needed. Had it been a trim, which is pretty rare for young players, especially quarterbacks, maybe McCarthy could have gotten back here in the coming weeks. Instead, we're going to be looking toward twenty twenty five for JJ. McCarthy vikings fully confident ian that he's going to make a full recovery be back better than ever. This repair gives him the better chance to have a long career as opposed to actually removing that cartilage. What it means for Minnesota right now is Sam Darnold, who they gave ten million dollars to back in March. He is now QB one, it seems for the bulk of twenty twenty four.

As crush as I am for our team and the excitement that we had in our building, and our fan base felt the same way, especially after seeing him perform really well the other day at US Bank Stadium. I'm the most crushed for JJ, But as our fans either have already come to find out or will in the future, this guy is so motivated and so dialed in. As excited as I was to draft him, He's confirmed everything that I hope to see, not only early on through training camp, through his performance last Saturday. But he should you know, our fan base and everyone should just be excited about the fact that we've got our young franchise quarterback.

I believe in the building.

And now it's about the unique aspect of continuing a very critical development process for him where maybe the physical reps aren't going to be there in the short term, but this is going to be a bump, small bump in the road.

One of the dynamics here was the Vikings wanted I to take this slow and really bring JJ McCarthy along, not have the pressure push him out on the field right away. And they signed Sam Darnold back early in the office park because they thought maybe Donald could be this year's Baker Mayfield. They didn't want this to happen, obviously, but you hear Kevin O'Connell already talking out to missing me about twenty twenty five. They still got a twenty twenty four season and Sam Donald a huge piece of the puzzle.

You sometimes I feel like I'm just too positive and too silver lining, right, this is a bad situation. It is a rookie quarterback who they think very very highly, who is out for the season, And still I cannot get over several things here. First of all, Sam Donald was probably was definitely going to start anyway, someone who's had a good camp, so one the Vikings signed to start and play soon who they think can be really good. You mentioned the Baker Mayfield comparison. That seems like a really apt one. And then whatever happens next year, they'll probably turn it over to JJ McCarthy and move on from there.

It'll be a win win.

And the fact that they wanted to take it slow with JJ McCarthy and now they have literally no choice but to take it sow.

Also not a bad thing.

It can be tough for a rookie quarterback, a first rounder who a team wants to bring along so to hear fans and everyone else calling for him while he's watching on the sideline. Obviously, you never want anyone to get injured. This is a serious injury. JJ McCarthy is expected to make a full recovery. That's why I think doing the repair.

Was so important.

But really, this it could be a lot worse for the Minnesota Vikings in this situation right here, talking specifically for their long term prospects.

If you if you have any room in your shelf behind you, just put a half full glass of water there. Some people will say it's half er. Well what we say that it is half full, So maybe we can move I don't know the senior ball helmet. Slide that a little bit. We'll see we can get gone. I got a with Sam Donald's thing.

No, it needs to be clear. We need to see. You're not gonna be able to see. It needs to be clear. And now I'm regretting even making the joke.

Sam Donald.

We've been saying, as we've talked about him the last couple of days, in really weeks, we've been saying, Okay, great offensive system for him to play in. Here, a really good offensive mind coach in Kevin O'Connell. Look at all the targets he's surrounded by. He's playing in a dome. Okay, all those things are still there. Now I'm gonna have one more on top of it. He didn't have anybody looking over his shoulder. He didn't have the crowd maybe clamoring for the rookie the minute that he slips up just a little bit. I mean, you can't come up with a better scenario for Sam Donald, who when you would talk to the facts, even even the forty nine ers last year when he was the backup for them, felt like he had never been in the right situation. This is the right situation. I might only be the situation for a year.

But that's it.

Like we're gonna know now if Sam Donald's ever gonna be able to reach that potential after this year, and the road to redemption begins in MetLife State, not against the Jets, but in met Life Stadium against the Giants Week one.

Excited to see that.

It feels like Sam Donald has been around forever. I'm sure Sam Donald, it kind of feels like he's been around forever with all the different teams that he's been on to the point of this, through this point in his career. He turned twenty seven over the summer. This is still a young guy with loads of talent. I know the Vikings have liked him so far. The question with Darnold has always been can he carry over what he shows on the practice field into the game's process and avoid those catastrophic errors.

Well, guess what the Vikings now are.

Going to find out right out of the gate, because he is going to be in their lineup On September eighth, Will Russell Wilson be in the lineup for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Here's what we know.

Missed a lot of time, a lot of reps in the early portion of training camp after popping his calf in a conditioning drill pushing a blocking slid on the first day of camp. Today was the last day of camp in La Trope for Pittsburgh. How did it feel, Russ?

Yeah, I mean I've been working every single day. Given the days I was a little bit lighter.

In team I was just getting all the fundamental work, and then obviously over the past two weeks really been building up a lot more reps than the team drills and everything else.

That's been great. Been full for several days and everything else. Who really bid them how to schedule?

So that's Russell Wilson on Russell Wilson. We'll hear plenty more of Russell Wilson on Russell Wilson. Is this thing moves forward here, Mike, We're now seeing Russell Wilson on the field. There's obviously rocky for Justin Fields in that first preseason game, in part because they couldn't snap him the football. What do you make though of where we stand right now as they head back to Pittsford.

Russell Wilson's back on the field availability right, the best ability availability like check.

All right, we got that part out of the way. Now he's got to go win the job. I'm serious, He's got to go win the job.

Mike Toman only said that Wilson was in the pole position.

This is not an automatic thing. I mean, in the spring he showed him some ups and downs.

From what I get, like, the same kind of things I'm hearing from Justin Field are about Justin.

Fields, I'm hearing about Russell Wilson.

So now he's got to get out there, show it every day on the practice field and show it in the live games as well. So this is still ultimately a competition and one that he has to go like.

It's not by default. He's got to go out and win this competition.

We've talked every day about these Steelers potentially being a landing spot for Brandon Ayuk as well.

One of these days we're.

Gonna have an end to that saga today, not that day yet. Brandon Ayuk was actually back on the practice field today. He was wearing Team Geary was not participating, but based on the reporters on the ground, one whom Matt Barrows live tweeted every move and every drink water, the Brandon Nyuk took the entire practice. He's still there in San Francisco. The Steelers continue to wait. Jerry Rice waged In said today was decision day for Brandon Nyuk.

There it is.

I guess we all find out tomorrow. Goats is from last night? Will he stay or lean? Been seventeen hours here, Jerry, It's about four pm right now out there on the West coast. We could use some answers, and as we've been telling you for two weeks now, it could happen before the show's over, or could be a few more days. Stay tuned and find out what we do now. The NFL preseason rolls out on the six live games on NFL Network in week two. A new era is taking shape with rookie classes looking to show out and some veterans out there too. It's all live on NFL Network. Black Eye restrictions apply. Also streaming on NFL Plus. Subscription required for NFL Plus. Patta Malmes have been playing in the preseason so far here and you read a big believer he can getting those live reps. What will it mean for him and those new receivers when they get to the regular season. Our guy jeffers to boots on the ground with Kansas City. He joined us next and the insunder is presented by Arbor Free.

Oh dude, I didn't put my pants on. I think anyone knows this. I forgot my pants. Pats up my pants on. See you later, Creed forgot my pants on. Let's get it, let's get it.

Got who got here?

We go?

You should see me some ground beef on the stove. Dude, you get that thing seasoned riding, lay it out, marinate a little bit, and then.

Row as it.

Hey, right, ral though, just finished that thing? How the guy? How they QB's on three one two three us for the mic right there? Taking it off. Sorry, guys, gonna run.

I've had that dream about the pants forget to put him on. That was a reality for Patrick Mahomes. I've also had a dream of being a back to back to back Super Bowl champion. Uh and the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes are working on that. But Mahomes says that or focused on the training and the getting better, Like you know, the process.

You gotta take it one step at a time.

You can't worry about what's happening in February when it's still August.

That's what Patrick Mahomes is saying.

Jeffy, you and he's a two time well back the back champion, three time champion. You get that, So I would heed his advice with regard to Mahomes and this Chiefs offense. Jeffery, you live there in Kansas City, so you know plenty about this team. Hollywood Brown got that Sterno clocular injury, if I can say it. So Mike missed the start of the season. You know it's a several week injuries. So who's got to step up in his absence?

Well, a surprising name that offensive winator Matt Maggie throughout the other day, which was Justin Watson who's been in the league seven years and has caught sixty six passes. But he's the most veteran player right now on this team and a trusted receiver for Patrick Mahomes. You know, he's a guy who's got good speed. He can run the same routs as Marquis Brown, and unlike Rooky Xavier Worthy or Nicole Hardman, who was more of a gadget type player, he's the guy right now who makes the most sense. And the Maggie did make the point of they have a ton of receiver groups, They have a ton of options when it comes to what they want to run and what plays they want to call. But they also know that lou using highwood ground for four to six weeks is the kind of lost that, especially for she Rice is suspended, could be hard to overcome. So don't be surprised if Justin Watson is catching a lot of passes this year.

Yeah, that's the guy that they've been looking to step up and looking to see.

If it happens in twenty twenty four, we'll see about Justin Watson and his role inside that offense this upcoming season. You were down in Houston yesterday, if I am not mistaken, to see what's going on with the Texans and to give us a first reader analysis on NFL dot com backslash j D. I'll give you that RL in the second, again, let's talk about the Texans after that maybe surprise season for some last year that they had with a run into the postseason.

What do they do to follow that up in twenty.

Four And I was down there yesterday talking to linebacker Aziz al Shaer, and he was really excited about the brotherhood this team was starting to create for itself.

They took a ten day trip to Ohio.

Between the preseason game and the prechason game. With the Hall of Fame game and the preesson game with Pittsburgh, they went to hunting in Vallely, Ohio, where General made Nicosia went to high school and practiced there, and it was almost like taking like a camping trip. These guys talked about how much time they had to bond, play cards and video games to get to know each other. And Alsha here, So this is a big thing for this team because once we.

Talk about C. J.

Stroud and all the big name acquisitions they have, it's that chemistry that's going to carry this team in December and January. So he felt like this team is really finding itself and creating a really strong bond that's going to help him out when it comes to winning. The AFC South again and potentially making a deep run in the playoffs.

CJ.

Stroud the tank Dell right there off the bat in that game against Pittsburgh. A great sign considering everything that Dell has been through recently and the fact that Stroud is looking to build upon last season.

Sounds like he's.

Been really more vocal and more of a leader and stepping up and letting guys know what's expected. And then in the offense, everything that you want to hear about a quarterback going into year two, everything you want to hear about the NFL. You check out Jeffrey Chadia's page on NFL dot com backslash Jadea for that story about the Texans and more in the passage more to come, Thank you, Jeffrey.

What's to come?

On the insiders?

CJ. Shroud no longer a rookie, but these guys are rookie rookies.

Kenneth Williams, Great May, Jaydon Daniel if you want to ball these breakdown of that and then here it comes, Ryan Baldeer are joining us next.

The NFL is back with four days of football when the twenty twenty four season begins. Baltimore Ravens playing the Kinca Chiefs Wats live on September fifth, at seven thirty pm Eastern Time on NBC NFL Kickoff presented by YouTube TV. Now amazingly just twenty two days away. We got a lot of other news, a lot of other business to take care of before then, including breaking news just before this show, the Patriots training pass rusher Matthew Judon to the Falcons landing in Atlanta, the standout pass rusher that they have been seeking for a couple of years. Now they get it with Judaan, a twenty twenty five third round pick, goes back to New England. Bad news for the Minnesota Vikings today, though not totally unexpected, JJ McCarthy will miss the entire twenty twenty four regular season after undergoing surgery on his knee. It was a meniscous tear, and again no surprise, a full repair was needed that gives him the best chance to get the full health. But it'll be Sam Darnold a quarterback for the Vikings when the real games begin. Now as big of a concern for Matthew Stafford, the Rams veteran quarterback, though he was held out from the back end of practice today precautionary measure according to the Rams Stafford dealing with some hamstring tightness. That's what happens when you get older. But there's some young quarterbacks on the way.

With the first pick in the twenty four trap, Chicago Bears like Caleb William.

Kaylebrows on the run Toxtown, gives the best quarterback in the country. Washington Commander select Jayden Daniels, go and there.

We goes again, Jaydeen Daniels, He's got another touchdown.

The New England Patriots like Drake May, May taking a shot, Dlena Couppins.

Like Michael Powell Junior Aosis plus Don Michael.

Fennix, JJ McCarthy throwing the rum ooh knicks six quarterbacks in the first dozen picks.

Bone nicks you the six.

None of those rookie quarterbacks threw for more yards in their preseason debuts than JJ McCarthy. He is also the one we are not going to see again until we get to twenty twenty five. Still though a lot to come from the rest of the guys on that list, And for more on that, let's welcome in our guy mister Breakdown himself. Brian Baldinger to the conversation alongside Mike here full Ian rapport on Tom pillis cerol back on The Insiders presented by Harbor Frank. Let's start Baldy, but the guy went number one overall, Caleb Williams, you've broken down his very first preseason action.

What did you see?

Well?

I thought he played twenty snaps when he started the game, he moved the team. I thought he showed command and he showed talent. I mean the first third down of the game, third and twelve, he hit DJ Moore for twelve yards and was the right read and to go through some progressions. But he got it here in a stick throw. You know, you watch this right here here it is he comes right back over the middle here to Dj. It's a great throw against good coverage. You know, he hit a number of really big throws.

You know.

Obviously the very next play after this is the screen right here as he sets up to DeAndre Swipp a little reminiscent of Patrick Mahomes right there. And how he looked that ball Magic Johnson Junior sky hooked to get rid of it under some duress. I don't even know if he looked at him but that's talent hit, that's confidence.

He did all of that.

A couple of bootlegs where he took you know, this shot right here to Dj Moore. It's like little pitching catch right there, first down, you know, and then he got one to Cole Comet where he could have taken the check down easily, but he looked down the field, kept his eyes down the field, and he hit Cole Comet right there. Look, I saw drops from Comet and Dj Moore. I thought, on this scramble right here and third down, he protected the ball. I guess he's working on a slipping slide guys, but he got down that he didn't know how to slide before training camp started, but looked like he knew what he was doing right there to protect himself. I thought it was a good debut. Par Kalem right there and he and what are you? You're shaking your head, You're no.

I mean, it's just amazing that like these guys could be such great athletes and so terrible at sliding. It's not that hard. I mean, everyone learned it in baseball. You know, Caleb played baseball. I think he's gonna be really good anyway. Another quarterback who seems to be I don't know if he's a good slider or not. It seems to be off to a good start. Otherwise, is Jaden Daniels for the Washington Commanders. A lot of players You could talk about Baldi both the trading him in the game, but I think people only really want to talk about one play, the play that checked to What do you see from Jaden Daniels.

Well, I mean, you know that's that's the opening drive of the game. You know, he goes eleven plays, That's how long he played.

I took the.

Team down, scored a touchdown against the Jets. They scrimmaged, you know, on on Thursday that week before this game, and it was good scrimmage.

But here's a throw. I mean it's a check, it's an audible.

He gets the ball out here to Diami Brown against good coverage right there, through it over the outside shoulder, and then this raid option. I mean, he made it look way too easy. But he makes a lot of things though, beat with his talent. But that's right out of the pistol formation. I think you'll see a lot of pistol formation with Jayden Dames. They showed that a lot against the Jets and their scrimmage. I think, uh, you know that you watched this right here, and this is you know some of them practice stuff and just the ball handling and all that that cap Berry happen working on.

Look, I thought you showed real command in this game.

Uh you know, the third down run on third and three to get it into the end zone. It's the right read. The Jets are trying to cover him from the safety in the middle field. He never had a chance. They picked him off. I thought it was a good day, knew for Jade. You couldn't ask for anything more.

I'm still laughing at Ian just you know, questioning the athleticism of NFL players.

Mind you, this is a guy that's told.

Me on a text thread that I should have taken a screenshot of that he could beat me in a forty bald. I don't know what you think of that. I think it's laughable. Definitely, Hill did not he ever said it. Let's move on to Drake May third overall tam two of three passes completed in one series of action. Your thoughts, your breakdown of Drake May.

I mean, there wasn't a whole lot dinner.

You know, he got the screen pass from third and twelve to Antonio Gibson for fourth down.

That's really here's the plan. I mean, just a screen, simple recount screen very much. He didn't have to do a lot and the ball off a couple of times.

Really, you know, you look, you hope that those kinds of things look easy. You just hope that this week he gets a lot more time. The Patriots played a lot of quarterbacks in this game. Drake made probably played the fewest STAPs of any of them. But you know that being said, we do it in a whole lot to really watch or to really surmise from that from from the limited number of STAPs that he had.

Doesn't sound like we're going to see much, if any Kirk Cousins Baldy through the course of the preseason, which means we're gonna see a lot of Michael Pennix Junior. What'd you make of the number eight overall picks preseason debut?

Yeah?

I thought Michael was good. I mean, he started the game, he played twenty five plays, and he made a number of really good throws. Seemed like he sailed a couple to some rookie running to receivers. But he like one thing that really jumped out obviously, just a great row right here to to Chris Blair, you know, for one yards and I mean it was a primate and then this throw coming back over the middle to the tight end.

It's just a great throw. But one thing that stood.

Out in his twenty five stamps was how decisive he was, how he really went through his progressions, you know, you know where to go with the ball. He wasn't confused by anything that Miami did throughout the game. He'd probably like to have two or three you know, balls up back, but the ones that were this kind of shows. I mean, he's very, very secure with his arm. He probably needs to work a little bit more on his footwork, just relying on his arm maybe a little bit too much and kind of rushing the whole mechanics of it. That will be pointed out, I'm sure practice this week in Atlanta, just to make sure that when his eyes moved, the feet moved, you know, just going back to like Drew Brees and Tom Brady, the great players that have played that position this league. That's what happened. The eyes moved and the progression the feet got.

To move with it body.

I wish I could ask you about JJ McCarthy and the progress he's making and when we're going to see him on the field with the Vikings. But obviously, as we've learned, we are not going to see him this year thanks to the knee surger he had today. So what do you see for the Vikings moving forward without JJ McCarthy Underson.

Well, I thought Sam Darnold was going to start to begin with I and it's not anything on JJ McCarthy. I just think Sam's been around this league. We've all filed Sam from his jets to Carolina and San Francisco. I mean, this looks like the most stable place he's ever been to, an elite receiving for a solid offensive line, a good running game. I mean, Sam just found out what a really good organization looks like playing and backing up last year in San Francisco. So I think that whatever Sam has, you know, obviously he's been through some injuries and some poor performances and rough stretches, But I feel like he learned a lot in San Francisco last year. Just talking to a pregame a number of games last year, I think you're gonna get whatever Sam is, You're going to get the best of them. And so I think the receivers are going to see a guy that has still has a good arm, he's got a good athletic ability, and he understands the game. And so I think Kim and Kevin O'Connell have to really bridge and build a good relationship right now going forward. He's the play home wer, he's the head coach, you know, everything from scripting plates and practice to putting game plans together for Sundays.

Sam's going to be involved heavily in the entire offense.

All right, let's round out the last of the half dozen selected in the first dozen picks.

Bo Nicks gotta like what you saw there he did, I.

Mean, came in for Jared Stidham, you know, late in the first quarter right there, played forty snaps, you know, and look, I thought he moved the team. What he has over Jarrett Stidham is he has good movement. We see it right there. That's the third down throw right there on the outside the Portland Sutton for a first down. He's got movement like this and he keeps his eyes down the field. Look, he was fifteen or twenty one. He's gonna start this week. I think the plan is like, Okay, we're gonna try and give these guys as much of a.

Chance to compete with one another.

But you know, you just look at the number of STAPs he got, obviously a lot of them with the number two against the Colt number two and three defense, so he looked a lot better. But we'll see him this week against the number ones with his number one offense, and if he plays well, I mean bon Diix might jump to the head of the class here as quarterback number one for Denver this year.

Baldy calling out those highlights in perfect timing with exactly what we're seeing. It's like watching a conductor with a symphony. Thank you very much, Baldy. Look forward to talking a lot more with you here as this thing rolls on. Coming back to this though, let's talk a little fantasy. I got Michael left Florio is going to be here. The players like DeVante Smith, they got a new play calling a new system.

Was it all mean?

Is Devanta Smith a winner or a loser? For fantasy? With Kellen Moore? Now is the Eagles OC we'll discuss Fourio next on The Insiders presented by Harbor Freight. If your name is Davante Davonte or DK, you're somebody who catches footballs for a living and you're part of half the league that has a new play caller on offense in twenty twenty four, So many changes around the league, so many changes for how you're valuting these guys in your fantasy leagues as well. For that piece of the equation, we bring in our guy, Michael f Florio along with Mike Herrifolo, Ian Raport, I'm Tom Pilisera which the Insiders presented by Harbor Freight. It's time to talk winners and losers Florio and no, we're not talking about me, Mike.

And then on the other side of the equation is and Ian.

We're talking about the guys who have those new systems, who you believe this is going to be good or bad for them in twenty twenty four.

So let's start out with a winner, somebody who's going to benefit from having a new oc.

Look euroll winners in my book, and so is DeVonta Smith who has a new play caller in Kellen Moore, who has a history of success during his tenure with the Cowboys. Every year that Dak Prescott stayed healthy, they were top six in points scored. His offenses are always past happy. They tend to feature a lot of deep targets, which we love for fantasy, and they use a lot of motion. That's something that neither DeVonta Smith or AJ Brown has really ever had a whole lot of in their career. So I think with the new play caller here, the Eagles offense is going to look more like it did two years ago and more like it did at the start of last season.

DeVonta Smith is a big winner. I think a career year could be in store.

Oh always been talented, now has a new contract. The prediction puts him right on my fantasy list. Thank you very much for you give us another one. Who else you got? He's a winner.

Another winner Deontay Johnson because Dave Canalis is going to be calling the plays and he has a history of revamping passing attacks. Two years ago he was the QB coach in Seattle. That year, both DK and Tyler Lockett were top sixteen Fantasy wide receivers. Last year he was the OC in Tampa. We know Mike Evans exploded, he was the wide receiver seven there.

Johnson is going to get a ton of volume.

Canal has already said when they draw a play up, the first thing that Bryce you should think is where is Deontay Johnson.

He is still an elite separator.

And he is just an absolute screaming value that you could get as your fourth wide receiver in fantasy drafts right now.

And I may add a pending free agent, and with all this money being thrown around at the wide receiver position, there's incentive.

For him to perform this upcoming season. All right, give us another winner, DK Metcalf.

The Seattle Seahawks have ran the fewest offensive plays both last year and in the three years that Shane Waldron was there, and because of that, DK Metcalf never was really more than a borderline wide receiver two or three for fantasy purposes. A faster paced offense should lead to better fantasy results.

But new offensive coordinator.

Ryan Grove has a pass happy offense that takes a lot of deep shots during his tenure as a Washington Husky.

So we're getting more deep shots for DK Metcalf. Sign me up. That is a good thing.

For fantasy and it could make DK take that next step and maybe be more of an elite wide.

Receiver for fantasy purposes.

All right, flips out of that Florio talk losers here, who is somebody who you would say stay away from in fantasy drafts based upon who they've now got called in the place.

This one pains me to say. But Davante Adams, he has been amazing for so long. But their new OC Luke Getzi has been with the Bears the last two years and the Bears finished thirty second and twenty seven in passing the attempts. Adams had absolutely elite volume last year and he was still just the wide receiver fifteen in fantasy.

Points per game, So he's getting up there in age.

His metrics have declined a little bit, and now if he's at risk of potentially losing some volume, he could slide even further. But you still have to draft him as your wide receiver one, so I don't love doing that.

I get to keep him on my fantasy team, and I'll tell you what, despite your advice, I'm not getting rid of him.

So take that. Give us another loser.

Alvin Kamara Saints, the new OC Clint Kubiak does not tend to feature just any running backs in the passing game a whole ton. He was with the forty nine ers last year and I know you could say we'll see him see had eighty three targets, but that was the first time Christian McCaffrey has played sixteen games and did not have at least one hundred and five targets, So that is a big drop off there. Kubiak was the Vikings oc in twenty twenty one, and that year neither of their running backs had fifty targets. Volume is what, especially in the passing game, is what keeps Alvin Kamara afloat right now at this stage of his career, so he's at risk of losing that. The floor certainly much lower than we're used to with Kamara also a pending free agent, so there goes that theory out the window.

I'm gonna have to.

Disagree with you, like Ian, how about that, but give us a loser, maybe we'll agree with this one.

DJ Moore.

I love Dj Moore as a player, but Shane Waldron ran a slow paced, run heavy offense during his three years in Seattle. In fact, no team ran fewer offensive plays in those three years than Seattle, and in his tenure, Metcalf's best finish in points per game was twenty second and Tyler Lockett's was sixteen. Meanwhile, Dj Moore last year was the wide receiver nine in total of points per game and wide receiver six in total points.

So adding more.

Target competition now with Keenan Allen and Roma Doons and potentially a slower paced offense, I think it's going to be very difficult for Dj Moore to live up to the expectations that we may have after such a huge fantasy season last year.

A lot more winners and losers. Go read the full article NFL dot com slash Florio. You also can see Michael f next Monday through Wednesday. Fantasy Live is back six pm Eastern Time, the best insights in the business. Florio, thank you as always, Poor Lauria and yourself to come on this show as well. Why don't you drafting Trevor Lawrence in their fantasy drafts here in the coming weeks? Now, it depends which Trevor Lawrence you're getting. So how are things looking in Jacksonville with a receiver group that once again has been revamped our Sarah Walsh has been down there. She'll join us next and the Insiders presented.

By Arbor Freedan.

Let's get to the preseason Spotlight presented by Harbor Freight. Very pleased to welcome in. Sarah Walsh hanging out with me today. All right, So the Tampa Bay Bucks and Jaguars had a joint practice today. You know, just listening to our good friend Todd Bowles talk after practice, sounds like it wasn't.

Exactly what he wanted to see.

Little sluggish maybe, which you know, it's practiced, so I get it. But what can the Bucks take from a daylight today, sir, Well, a couple of things.

Todd Bowles said that he thought his team should have been better physically and mentally dealing with the heat. Obviously they deal with it in Tampa. They're just upthrow it in Jacksonville this week. He also said that he thought they came out flat. That's something that Antoine Winfield, their safety, expressed They got better later in the day. Now Bowls, who's known for being a defensive guy, was watching the offense for most of today. We'll get to his defense in a second. But on the offensive side, he said he thought they dropped too many passes. And I was able to talk to wide receiver Chris Godwin after the first of what will be two joint practices there in Jacksonville, and he told me that today what you sort of saw were the ebbs and flows that in a regular season game. So, yes, it wasn't a great start for the Buccaneers when they came out of the gates there.

He simply that happens in the games.

Down a couple of touchdowns, a bad team lets that spiral out of control, he said, a good team figures out a way to turn the moment around. Feels like they did at the end of practice. Now a year ago today, as you look at Baker Mayfield, he hadn't even been named starter for this Tampa Bay team. And I asked Godwin with the biggest differences, and he said, you know, Baker had been there for a couple months, but what they didn't have with Baker is live game reps at that point. So he said, it's so much better because it's the nuances of this offense despite having a new offensive coordinator, that are much better, he said verbally the communication with Baker, but in particular the nonverbal communication of receiver has with this quarterback, little things that he's picked up on Ian that they simply couldn't have had a season ago, and that was the season where things went really well. So all in all, the Bucks still feel it was a huge positive.

It's crazy to think about how much Baker Mayfield's careers accelerated just from literally last year at this time to right now. It's just I knew it, but it's nice to hear you sort of remind us of that. On the other side of things, there was a very familiar face addressing reporters for the Jacksonville Jaguars today as Eric Armstead, one of their big ticket free agent acquisitions. Talk to reporters today, What do you learn about that? And tell us anything else you learned about the Jaguars as well.

Sarah well So.

Eric Armstad came off the pup list on Tuesday. He didn't practice today in that joint practice. He's still working his way back, but this was the first time he addressed the media since training camp started, and the biggest takeaway of it is said he is hopeful that he will be able to go four week one for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he didn't make any promises, but he did say that that is the goal. As for the offense, Trevor and company got the better of the Buccaneers defense for the most part of today. I talked to Bucks starting corner Zion McCollum, and he said that the ball was coming out of Lawrence's hands really fast. He said, he thought faster than he even saw Lawrence get rid of it last year. I said, who else stood out to you and he said number seven. Number seven is fast, Number seven is a deep threat. Number seven is their first round pick out of LSU Brian Thomas, and so I talked to Thomas after practice once. Zion said that He said that the physicality and the speed because he hasn't been in the NFL but for a couple of months now, he said that he's starting to catch up to that. And the best thing that can happen for him is, he said, these live reps doesn't even necessarily need to be a preseason game, but these joint practices where he is now seeing live reps against veteran NFL players is helping him speed up the process.

I said, who have you leaned on?

Who have you learned from and he pointed to Gabe Davis and Christian Kirk. One thing to keep a note on. Of course, guys at this time of year get rest days. Christian Kirk was one of the guys that was not out there, one of the starters for the Jaguars that wasn't out there. Doug Peterson talks before practice, so he wasn't available after practice. I'm sure that Christian Kirk's absence will be addressed tomorrow for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

They will do it all again.

Hey, by the way, clean practice, no fights, No one threw any punches.

Everyone's just trying.

Everyone's just trying to get better. Actually, I said Todd was overwatching the offense. He's, well, Doug's watching the defense. We had to split it up. Somebody had to be watching most sides of the field.

There.

They're gonna do it again tomorrow in practice and then they're going to meet Saturday in Jacksonville for preseason game number two.

Ian love it great stuff, no fights, thumbs up for that. And Brian Thomas is going to hit the ground running like you showed today that Jacksonville Receiving Corps is going to be balling, and that was someone who just the talent alone. I know coaches and evaluators absolutely loved during this draft. Sarah, thank you very much, great stuff as always, look forward to talking to you soon. There is our good friend, George Kittle hugs good in a forty nine Ers uniforms. You know, doesn't look good. Everyone else, every single personnel the George Kittle looked at today, specifically reporters. He tells us all about it coming up on the inside.

Matthew Judon is now an Atlanta Falcon, traded to Atlanta for a twenty twenty five third round draft pick. Judan, Well, you put in Mercedes Benz Stadium into the old Google maps right there. A good choice. I'm not a waste guy myself. Judon turns thirty two tomorrow. No new contract yet, but he does have a new home. Jamar Chay is also still waiting for a new contract, but after not being seen on the practice field on Tuesday, he was spotted by I'm the Team Photographer getting off the playton in Chicago. Bengals Bears have a joint practice tomorrow preseason game on Saturday.

George Gittle and.

The forty nine ers still don't know what's going to happen with Brandon Iu, but get what more important things to address with reporters, namely what's going on with the media corus shoe game out there?

George, So you guys are out there at every practice.

You guys watch us all the time, but there's a specially teams period where I catch the footballs and I I could observe you guys, and you guys really need to up your sneaker game. It's absolutely atrocious. I got some vomaros. Those are fire and Grant wear his vans every single day. New balances. They look like vans. Yeah, those are vans. It's okay, but you wears every day, so I need to switch those up. But I observe all you guys's shoes and I am disappointed in you guys as a community.

So we could up those police.

So we did Insider shoe power rankings. I know Ian would put himself at the top, but let's remind you one of the very first shows of the Insiders we ever did Ian, you did this?

So I have Jordan Force. These are the military blacks. They got the pink laces.

It's hard to find it time to wear these, Jordan, what would you call them?

Force? These are the military blocks.

Those are not the tournaments. You can't wear them if you don't know the number. I don't know where I am there, but that was That was the third show ever. Man, what a throwback, and you do you not know the difference at least.

In I was wearing a T shirt back then. I wish I could still wear a T shirt. That's my takeaway from the second
