The Insiders Podcast: Ceedee Lamb Holds Out of Training Camp and HOFer Leroy Butler Joins the Show

Published Jul 24, 2024, 3:16 AM

NFL Network Insiders discuss the biggest storylines heading into training camp. The insiders cover Ceedee Lamb not reporting to Cowboys training camp, Amari Cooper agreeing to a restructured deal, and Brandon Aiyuk reporting to training camp despite requesting a trade. Plus, Pro Football Hall of Famer Leroy Butler joins the insiders to discuss Jordan Love’s contract and the expectations for the Packers’ defense under new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

Aaron Rodgers brought back a souvenir from that mini camp week trip to Egypt. How it's late July, it is trading half time Rogers reporting for duty with the Jets in Cincinnati.

Well, the real Joe Burrow please stand up.

He's back like Abra Cadabra and the Bengals in camp as well. So are the Rams. Matthew Stafford reporting for duty his sixteenth NFL season, twenty three teams at all with their veterans back in the building, and so are we welcome inside with the inside. It's alongside Judy Batista and Mike Darriffolo. I am Tom Pellaicero. Tons of news with veterans showing up. We've got resolutions on some significant contract matters. More Butler going to be joining us to talk about one that's now year resolve. What's going on with the Packers and Jordan Love those contract negotiations. Will talk about the Bears, we'll talk Cardinals, we'll talk Seahawks, Dolphins, a whole lot more. But let's start out with the guy you just saw. Matthew Stafford and the Rams, as first reported by Ian Rappidmore way back during the NFL Draft during one of those times when they come to him and he can't quite tell where he's sitting, but he says a bunch of stuff and then they go back to guys like Daniel Jeremiah, who know what they're talking about. Matthew Stafford and the Rams have resolved an ongoing contract matter, agreeing to terms on an adjustment to get Stafford back in the fold at age thirty five. Mike, we thought that this was probably going to come right around this time. We don't yet know the details. What we do know is Matthew Stafford wanting a little bit more security at a time that the quarterback market since he signed that extension after the Super Bowl has completely taken off. They were able to find a middle ground.

His security is what we're talking about here. This was not an extension.

According to Sean McVay, who actually broke the news of the renegotiated contract when he spoke to the media at training, give.

Had made them way for a couple of hours and it was clear that.

This was being ironed out and this was the reason that he hadn't yet spoken McVeigh, saying Stafford came in, spoke to him, spoke to the front office in person, and that really helped get this thing done. Now, he only had fifteen million dollars, only fifteen million dollars beyond this season guaranteed on the next two years of the deal, so.

He's still in the contract through twenty twenty six.

But we can surmise that he got a lot more guaranteed money here as part of this contract.

We'll see if the average per year is bumped up.

It was around thirty million dollars the average per year in the last couple of years of the deal, which, seeing is how the numbers are now into the fifties, this was a veritable bargain for the Rams that they can keep it around that number.

But again just giving Stafford some security going forward.

You know, when we saw that he came in, which we expected that somehow they would figure this out, it occurred to me, how many more times are we going to see something like this? As the quarterback market continues to jump jump, jump, jump jump. Are we going to see quarterbacks in this position go back and say, well, wait a minute, do something to the contract.

I want more guarantees there.

I can't imagine that Matthew Zeffort is the only quarterback who thinks this while they are watching quarterbacks who came in behind them get.

Contracts that barster pass theirs. I have a feeling this is not the last time we're going to hear this.

Matthew Senter was also one of the last rookie quarterbacks to get paid on his original deal prior to the Rookie Waite Scale. He's done several contract extensions since. Not purely about the money here, but obviously before he set fight on the field wanted that deal adjusted. They were able to get that done. The Cowboys, of course, also have a situation ongoing with their quarterback. Let's focus right now on the wide receiver in Ceedee Lamb, who did not show up for minicamp, made his statement as he seeks a contract extension that will put him among if not the top wide receiver market that got reset this summer by Justin Jefferson. I was told Ceedee Lamb not on the play to California. They actually just touchdown in Oxnard a few minutes ago. That's not mandatory. Tomorrow Judy is reporting date. But it certainly seems like this is a continuation of what we saw in the spring and the question then becomes, when, if at all, do we see ceedee Lamb a lesson until he gets that new deal. We're going to talk about.

A lot of wide receivers in this program and the different approaches they want contracts and how.

They are approaching coming into training camp.

In this case, it appears that cd Lamb is not going to be with the team when training camp opens, as you reported. I mean, he obviously could hop on a plane and get there in time for tomorrow's reporting date, which is mandatory. It appears that he is not going to be And I just go back and think we have spent all off season watching this sort of slow motion problem for the Dallas Cowboys. We've talked ad nauseum about the Dak Prescott contract, but the CD Lamb one was playing out at the same time. It's not playing out at the same time, nothing was happening, and wondering, well, something would have to get done by the time they got to training camp. And here we are on the eve of training camp opening at Oxnard. Jack doesn't have a new contract. CDE Lamb doesn't have a new contract, and you just wonder where the Dallas Cowboys are going.

To go from here where they should go is right to the number that justin Jefferson helped set.

Now that should make this a little easier, right.

He went first by getting that deal done in about thirty five million dollars per year. So that's where you'd expect CD Lamb to be, Jamar Chase to be give or take a couple of bucks here or there at the either side of that thirty five. But at least it gives a little zone for the sides to hit. You just needed that pressure point. Well here we are. Here's the pressure point training camp getting him in there, avoiding a hold out, getting this deal done. They talked about what CD LAMB means. Well, now it's time to show him in monetary form. They also said, hey, we can't do a whole lot free azy because we got all these big deals coming up.

Well this is one of them, so now get it done well if you want. That's certainly an important metric here. But another factor to consider here Sea Lambs eight. Tory Dandy kind of invented the three year wide receiver extension. The Cowboys historically have wanted to do five six year extensions here, so the number of years going to be another factor. Of course, Dallas could also franchise tag Seedee Lamb after the season. Worth monitoring that situation as we move forward here. Mary Cooper, former Cowboys wide receiver, also wanted a new deal to replace the final year of a contract he signed way back when he was still a Dallas Cowboy. In Mike, it was the simplest contract of all time. It was nearly five years, one hundred million, and he got paid twenty twenty, twenty, twenty twenty. Finally, in the year five is going to see every bit of that deal and maybe a little bit more.

Yeah, he'll have the chance to earn a five million dollars on top of the twenty million that you talked about, which seems fair. Right, you want to get a little bit more money, We'll give you the chance to earn it, but you got to go out there and earn it. And this is a guy who throughout the course of his career, he's hit one thousand yards and beyond except pretty much when he's been injured. So if he stays healthy and he's on the field, we'll see about the details, the finer details of these incentives. But you would think that these would be incentives that he has the chance to earn again given his past performance.

We had Andrew Berry here on The Insiders last month.

He didn't talk about the specifics of the contract negotiation, but he talked about what Amari Cooper means, how he approaches things, how might they love having him around so to get this thing done out as the team reports for training camp, certainly was a golfer Andrew Berry that he has achieved.

It's been the summer of the receiver and not just goes that Netflix show. Also because guys like Brandon Ayuk, who we've talked a lot about on this show. Because Brandon Ayuk has talked a lot about himself and what's going on for the forty nine ers. He did show up for trading camp earlier today. As Mike and Ian Rappaport reported, Here's what John Lynch had to say about where they stand right now with one of their star players.

We've had great communication. You know, we started this really early. We made it a priority to try to get done. We've had excellent communication throughout. You know, really don't want to characterize we haven't been able to and that's that's a shame. Not going to get into negotiations, and you know, Kyle says, there's no absolute so we're open to anything. And you know, like I said, Brandon's big part of this team and we expect that he will be going forward. You fully intended on Brandon being a Niner moving forward. We're always open to listen to things, but like I said, we expect Brandon to be an integral part of our team like he has been, and excited about that.

I can assure you. Kyle Shanean did talk at other points in that press charrass wasn't like a full jay and silent avertine they were doing there. Mike, you first reported from the golf course. I might add last week Brandon you ked requested a trade again. Are you driving this storyline forward here? Now he's showing up? What does it all mean?

Well, it means that you've got a potential awkward situation on your hands if you're the forty nine ers, But it's one that you've been through before. And John Lynch was asked about that with Deebo. Samuel said, you know you had the confidence in the past you were going to be able to work past his trade requests, and they did. What makes you so confident here and again pointing to what Brandon.

Ayuk means to the team and the fact that he understands it.

Sometimes that a player feels this way and you just got to get to a point where the sides can agree on something. Well, I would say they need to go back to engaging in contract negotiations actual offers.

They haven't done that since May. That's the reason for the trade.

Request from Ayuk, in addition to the fact that the numbers weren't that high. It's is that they haven't had those offers back and forth. They had that media a couple of weeks ago, and the hope on Ayk a yuks end was that that was going to help reset the negotiations, but Judy that didn't happen. So maybe him being in training camp on time when he missed Mini caamp will be.

The impetus to get back to those negotiations. Perhaps we'll see.

Right, we talked about receivers taking different approaches to their contract demands. He's going to be in camp and John Lynch expects him to practice, so it's not.

Even going to be a hold in. It's not a holdout.

He's going to be there and practice I thought what was interesting is John Lynch didn't entirely slam the door on the possibility of the trade, said something like no absolutes. But look, we have been saying this all summer. They do not want to trade him. They're trying to win a Super Bowl. They want Brandon Ayuka on the field. He's one of the most dynamic players in the entire league. They don't want to be in this position. But I agree, like you know, if things have sort of cooled off in the last few weeks, there just hasn't been much conversation and much movement, and so I would say, now that we are getting into late July, it is time to ramp that up again.

As we have said over and over.

Again, the Niners have a history of doing deals late in the summer. They're comfortable with that. Now is around the time when things should wrap up.

Though. Forty nine Ers another one of those twenty three teams that had veterans support. Today, so are the Miami Dolphins, who did us all a favor, who are trying to describe social elements on TV by just captioning, Hey, that's Bradley job. I don't have to guess that is Braxton Burios. It goes on and on Tyreek Hill also is there so as to a tongue low, we get it here from Tua. He's got his own contract situation going on, so Hyrie will end up playing out with your quarterback. Oh man tour. He's he's in great spirits.

Obviously, I can't speak on his part about the countract situation because that's his business, his personal business, and as his teammate, as.

His brother, I try to stay out today.

But as far as you know how he feels, as far as like mental health mental health standpoint, he feels amazing.

He's he's he's very excited to be back in the building with all of the guys.

So it's great to see him out there man, you know, still coming into work, you know, still about his business, what I have in the deal done, and and it's just been awesome. Man, just having him having him around, like just his presence means a lot, you know, to a lot of the guys.

Man, so especially me, so exciting. Oh yes, I believe he will.

And here's why I believe he will practice because two, he's very competitive.

He would not tell you that, but he's very competitive and he's.

A he's a guy that doesn't like to follow too far behind, you know, and and he understands that we have a really good team and.

He doesn't want to miss he miss his window.

Like I said, we got a great offense. You know, our defense is real good. It's looking real good this year.

Man.

So he understands all of that. So I believe he's gonna practice.

I love that Miami heat where you're toweling yourself off right after practice while talking to the media. Let's walk him in. Our guy, Cameron Wolfu's down there in that Miami heat right now. Cam. I feel like we've been talking about the to a contract situation in largely the same regard for months, which is that both sides are motivated to try to get something done. Dolphins believe they have their franchise quarterback to a likes being the Dolphins franchise quarterback, but getting to that number to this point has proved elusive. Where do we stand in these talks? Yeah, Tom, Today is that Tuas showed up for camp.

From what I've told, negotiations have remained active between Dolphins into a camp over the last few weeks, but nothing is done.

And so as we prepare for their first practice tomorrow.

Morning to it does not have a contract ascension, and Tua was clear last month that he expects the market to be the market, and he expects to be paid in the neighborhood of those big money quarterback deals Jared Golf, Trevor Lawrence Schoburrow on that fifty three to fifty five million dollar range. And it appears Jordan Love, who was into a draft class, is appearing to finalize his deal soon too, and so that's another.

Marker for Tua. So the ball is in to his court.

He did report today, so no holdout, but does he participate in some all or none of the Dolphins first practice tomorrow. As you heard from Tyreek so eloquently, he believes too will practice because, as he said, he's competitive, he doesn't like to fall behind.

He realizes it's title window.

Jay Lawatto, his other receiver, also said that he expects him to be practicing playing and he doesn't pipate this being a distraction. But there is a possibility that Tua decides, hey, I don't want to do all of practice like he did in OTAs and just do seven on seven an individual, or I don't want to do any of practice until you pay me. And so it's worth noting that Jordan Love, who is going through this process as well, has the same agency as Tua.

And athletes first. Different agents, but same agency.

And so tomorrow I will be at Dolphins practice to see what Tula's choice is, which route that he goes. It was notable hearing from Dolphins running back Raheem Mosher who said that if Tua decides to skip some of practice or all of practice, that it could be the right move and his teammates would understand because it's been a team first guy, a leader. And so this is a guy who was in the MVP hunt last year, stayed healthy for all seventeen games, played the best year of his career, and I think the Dolphins know they got to pay him. So we'll keep an eye on if it happens soon. But right now it looks like Tooa will enter training camp without that deal.

Cam As we.

Looked at the off season and the quarterback deals that we expected to get done, a one.

Of these have really fallen the way that I thought.

Jordan Love right around the started training camp, if not a little bit into training camp, find Jared Goff done early, and it was around the draft time a little bit after that.

If I'm recalling correctly, Trevor Lawrence in the spring.

Yeah, they've all kind.

Of slotted in exactly where I thought they would have, except for this one. Like I figured by now, this would have been long done. This would have been something that would have been done in the spring. I know that Tua actually said he would have liked to have had it done in the spring. It just didn't come together. I don't know why this is taking so long. You talked about his agent, Ryan Williams of Athletes first was in Miami, and we know that because he posted a picture of him and Tua had a couple of their other clients at a Zach Bryan concert that Zach Bryan then retweeted him or reposted himself. So he was there at least in the era to help potentially get this thing done before camp.

It just didn't happen to this point, so it's really confusing.

Tommy talked earlier about the difference in the length of the deals.

If Tugula Bylowe wants to do a shorter deal than he he won't necessarily eclipse Joe Burrow or Jordan Love is the highest paid quarterback in the league, but he can come in somewhere just below that. So besides, we're trying to work out the finer details here to see if they can get something done. Perhaps before practice tomorrow. Okay, we'll see.

The Dolphins also have been trying to resolve their pass uraze really since the tail end of the last season when they had all those injuries. They thought they were doing that by signing Shaquill Barrett. He ends up retiring on the even training camp camp. But they did sign another pass rusher today.

Yeah, Tom, The Dolphins re signed a Manual Ogba to a one year deal. I'm told it's worth up to five million dollars if he reaches all of his incentatives. And Agma had a workout on Mondayay also with the on and Gokua, another free agent pass rusher, and Agua's workout I'm told really well, and they chose to sign Agba. And look, this is a team where as much as we talk about quarterback and receiver for them, their defense is callvergrowing a huge overhaul and pass rush is a huge issue. Jalen Phillips and Bradley Shobb. Their top two pass rushers are coming off series achilles in eight steel injuries, and they also just lost Shack bearit's to retirement, and so a lot of eyeballs. Ogba he got a limited opportunity last year and Big Dangio scheme wasn't really a fit. There should be a better fit in Anthony Weaver's scheme, and all eyes will be on their first round pick. Chop Robinson in training gap you could have a much bigger than a spector role due to all of their.

Thin shut it down a lot of sorry, batted down a lot of passes according to the Sea roll that we just showed them.

Let's see passes defense last year. Oh too, that was from the Betels and to what play one one other Dolphins Zoe too another one of their off season editions. Veteran Odell Beckham Junior placed on the active Fish unable to perform lists today. My understanding is he's dealing with a lot of minor things. It's not like a new acute injury. He's just not ready yet to get back to football. So this is the plan to ramp him up. That's one of the names we'll be keep an eye on here as we move forward. Thank you very much, Cam both to talking with you again soon. Vikings also had some business that they got done today, agreeing to term a contract extension with Christian Darisa. As Ian and I first posted. It's a four year extension worth up to one hundred and thirteen million dollars in new money. He had had his fifth year option for twenty twenty five exercise back in the spring, now locked up on the blindside of whoever ends up being the Vikings quarterback maybe JJ McCarthy through twenty twenty nine. That guy the number one overall pick, Caleb Williams, one of the early returns for the week of training camp so far for the Bears, Well, let's guts it next to the insiders. Bears fans gotta love this. It's Caleb Williams, It's DJ Moore, It's a connection. Nothing better. During the early days of training camp in some of those social media height videos, Welcome back to the Insiders. Tom Pillicero and Judy Battista joined right now by our friend Stacy Dales. Stacy the Bear's course, one of the teams they got to report a little bit early because they have the Hall of Fame game. We've had a few practices in the books now, so give me the goods. How's Caleb looking. How's that offense coming together?

Yeah, Tom and Judy, he honestly, I was at practice today. He looked especially sharp today. I think it's just building. The improvement is just building. We have seen him at practice as I witnessed today, throwing from different platforms, and I know everybody as I shot some video here today, I know the there are no paths, but we see his ability to throw from the different platforms. We see the different arm angles. It's really actually just sort of artistry to watch him on the field with a football. But what's been really cool is watching his eyes turn defense defensive players one way and get him going one way, and then come back to the other way and it's ones versus ones and he is being challenged, you guys, because there are nine returning starters on this Bears defense and it is going to be good. Mark my words. That is a swag type group on the other side of the football. And when you have ones versus ones, what they're doing is they're challenging with tempo. Shane Walder and the offensive coordinator, has talked about how they've got to change up the tempo and get Caleb.

Williams to make different decisions.

Mattie Buffles, the head coach, has talked about his improvement returning from the period just after the mini camps into training camp, which is roughly five what's six weeks a month or so, and that has been noticeable.

Shane Waldron has talked about it.

And I asked Darnel right from the offensive line, just where he sees that cadence in command changing and if there's improvement.

He said, indeed, there's improvement. You can see it, you can feel it.

And I think that is really exciting for the Chicago Bears with all the talent out on that perimeter.

Well, I think part of what we're seeing not to take anything away from Caleb williams talent, which is obvious, but you're also seeing how rare a situation Caleb Williams has been dropped into. Right, Usually when quarterbacks are taken first overall, they are not going to a team that has as many pieces in place as the Chicago Bears have in place for him. They've got one of the best wide receiver rooms in the entire league in place, They've got a good offensive line. As you were saying, that defense is really good, really turned it around at the midpoint last season. Just compare his situation to for instance, Drake Nay in New England, who really went into a rebuilding situation, and you're seeing the difference in the result even now before they put the pads on. I think, if anything, we might have to manage expectations for Caleb Williams because he has been put into such a great pocision.

Stacy that Bear's defense. I think that's a lot of different Yeah, it had changed last year with you know, obviously Alan Williams being there through the course of training camp and he's gone early in the season that Eberflus ends up taking over. We really saw them play well the back half of last season, especially after the Montes Sweat trade. Now got a chance for further staff turnover, maybe a little bit more of a settled plan. What is this Bears defense going to look like in twenty twenty four.

It's only going to look better, Tom I was just about to say, to Judy's point managing expectations, Well, they want to exceed expectations. They know there's a level of accountability with this defense that they want to put into motion. They got to go out there and improve it. And Jalen Johnson has talked about it. As to see him right here on your screen, he's become one of the best lockdown corners in the game. You mentioned Montese Sweat finally has an entire offseason right joined in Week nine last season. Think about a guy like Jervon Dexter, who I saw in person today. He took the podium as he's a monster entering his second season and has changed so much about the way he trains. He will be explosive. Eric Washington, the defensive coordinator, asked him today because we know they took the ball away last year and he's new to this staff. We know they took the ball away. We know they stopped the run best in the league. What about the pass rush?

How good?

What you envisioned that group being like? And he said, they want to.

Become the best pass rush in the NFL, and they're going to want to rush with four and get push up front, hits, sacks, sack fumbles, make the quarterback throw off schedule in order to let that secondary, which he called exceptional, take off in the back end of that defense.

Stacey, Judy, stick around. You're going to be talking with Leroy Butler about the Packers in just a little bit. Here. What's happening with Jordan Love, what's happening in Arizona with Kyler Murray and the Cardinals. Those expectations taking a step forward. Kyler is healthy this time around. That list included the New England Patriots, back on the field for the first time in close to a Courus century. No more Bill Belichick. Gerrod Mayo is the new man in charge, and he's decided, at least going into camp here, who's topest quarterback def turn Obviously that's the ultimate goal.

And you know, obviously don't take things like that lightly, but uh, you know, I understand in this league, you know, and I understand how every day is a challenge, every day's competition, and I'll ak forward to that and I feed off that and.

Looking to go out there and improve it every day. The draft, Drake may at number three overall, Judy, this is a player who, based on all the coaches and scouts I talk to, maybe of all those top six quarterbacks who went in the draft, he's the furthest one away from being ready to play. So makes sense why they in advanced went and got a guy like Jacoby Brisette. But to hear what Jron Mayo had to say and branch Percept's reaction, what jumped out at you.

It was the consistency of the message they have said this since draft Day that they were going to let this play out organically. They are not putting a timeline on when they want Drake May ready. If he happens to outplay Jacoby Bersette in the pre season, then they have a decision to make. But they are not looking at this and saying Drake May has to be the Day one starter. They are perfectly happy to have Jacoby for Sets start this season.

He's the perfect guy for this.

He has spent his entire season, in his entire career in awkward situations. He knows how to handle them. He is a great locker, Rundi, a great mentor kind of figure. So I think we're just going to let it play out in New England and they'll see how Drake Nan looks in preseason, and then if they have a decision to make, they'll make it.

Jacoby for Set's going to be the starter. Otherwise, another quarterback competition in camp will we keep an eye on is the one in Denver. Mike and unlike John Mayo or Kevin o'connin recent days, Sean Payton not not ready to give anything away yet in terms of what direction this is going to go. No, and it's a three way race. This one is fun.

I mean, you talk about three different guys ooh Nicks, Jarrett Sidham and Zach Wilson that are at completely different parts of their career and taking different paths.

To get to this point. This is fun.

And McGorry ian's texting us about something related to the RAMS.

And that's throwing me off. Sean Payton not shoving.

Sean Payton says he's going to mix up the reps as it goes.

Along and let this thing kind of happen along the way and figure out who's going to get more reps and put himself in position to be the starter from week one against the Seattle Seahawks.

So even he can't predict how this is going. I'm sure in his.

Mind he's got a leader in the Cubass, but even he can't predict how this one is going to go. So as far as traditional training camp battles and the fact that you've got three guys going, it doesn't get much.

More fun than this one. Everything I've heard is the Bonecks has been exactly what the Broncos wanted. But I've also heard jer sim had a really good offseason here so absolutely gonna be fun moving forward. Hey, wrapping Ford, stop textas during the show, you're not on tonight. We are leave us alone a little bit here in Washington. Meanwhile, they've also got the rookie quarterback. It's Jane Daniels, the number two overall pick. Certainly seems logical that he's going to be the one starting in week one to dan Quinn, Adam Peters addressing that again today and dan Quinn saying, hey, we'll tell you when he's ready. Once he's there. He's not there just yet. Obviously they want him to go through the camp and compete moving forward. Rice Young didn't have to go through a process like that last season. He was named QB one all the way back in many camp. There's certainly opening year two goes a little bit better, maybe even can challenge that playoff drop.

Not at all for us again, I'm true, yeah, fact, but that's not something we can on control. And also it's not gonna obviously not gonna gonna help us and have any I think everyone in the league knows. It's every every year things changed, you know, And for us, we're just focused on us earning the right to to get to where we want to be to accomplish our goals. And again, whether we won a Super Bowl last year or whatever happened last year happened, it's not gonna really help or hurt us this year. We have to do everything we can and this league got to earn it every season, so it's all we're focused on.

The Panthers GM. Dan Morgan also pumping the brakes when about potential playoff expectations, Mike, probably a good idea free Carolina team that won two games last season and is starting over with a new head coach once again, Ian Dave Canalis. There are expectations though, of playoffs in New Orleans, a team that narrowly missed the playoffs literally on tiebreakers at the end of last season. Here one of their key players we've been tracking throughout the offseason, Alvin Kamara, showing up today after walking off the field in mini camp. But what exactly does that mean here, Mike, Well, it.

Means that Mickey Lomis, the general manager, said that he was pleased that Kamara was there on time for the start of training camp.

We shall see where it goes. I mean, all these guys reporting, it's like, what's going to happen.

Are they going to practice, are they gonna you know, they're.

Back going to start to act up.

Here's Kamara with the Marsha Lynch, who famously was quoted as saying, I'm just here so I don't get fine.

That was at the Super Bowl for media interviews.

This is a little bit different here, so he posted that on social media today, So we'll see where it goes. I and Tom you know this, Like we've been talking you and I throughout the off season. We thought at some point, what was it back in March, that this thing was close and these sides were.

Going to come to an agreement.

Because remember, he's got that big balloon number next year that was never meant to be paid out.

So if they want to get something.

Done to secure him for twenty twenty five without him hitting free agency, they got to do it at some point before we get to the spring here. So that's kind of what the sides have been talking about here. Christian mccaffery's deal. They have muddy the waters a little bit, at least from Kamaras standpoint, saying, Hey, the place just went up, So keep an eye on this one to see where it goes.

And let's be clear, this is not Alvin Kamia seeking a raise. This is about the teams trying to figure out a launch way to restructure this contract that benefits everybody, working on it for months. Just not there yet. Aaron Rodgers, of course, got his contract last year with the Jets as part of that trade from the Green Bay Packers. Photo I got just it's a great dead pad. I'll give him that. That's every five year old holding the football. Kind of an homage to back in his high school days in his senior photo. So he showed up in Mission meniamp a son Reddick still not there? What's up?

Like, Well, Hassan Redick's slated to make fourteen million dollars in change here moving forward. He wants a new deal. The Jets traded for him made him an offer. This was reported earlier and since confirmed. They made an offer before the trade. They did not have an agreement in place. They figured, well, shortly after we make this trade, we're close enough, we'll figure it out.

No, and it didn't.

He for minicamp I was told leading up the training camp that he is quote serious about his money from somebody close to him, and he's showing it here by not being here for the start of training camp. So the Jets and has Son Reddick have some work to do to get to an agreement for what he believes.

Is fair and what they're willing to do. Mike, thank you very much, talk to you in a few minutes. Exciting times for the Arizona Cardinals getting their team out there, including that guy, the number four pick, Marvin Harrison Junior. As we welcome in our Omar Ruiz in Arizona. Nice to get a gift for your quarterback Kyler Murray like a Marvin Harrison junior Omar. Also nice to get a gift for Drew Petsing entering year two as the offensive coordinated What do we expect?

Yeah, Well, Drew Petsing is saying that his play calling is a lot better the better players that he has on the roster, and certainly Marvin Harrison Junior an example of the improved weapons around Kyler Murray. Also, when shaping this offense for year two with Kyler Murray and Drew Petsing, it sure was nice having Kyler Murray on the field in the off season instead of asking questions last year during the off season as Drew Petsing was installing the offense, like what concepts do you like? How did you see things on tape? To actually ask Kyler, what did you see from the defense on that particular play? Do you like this particular route? So they're able to shape the offense that way. Also the number of weapons around Kyler Murray. Petsying saying that they feel that they'll be able to go into week to week offensive game plans and attack defenses different ways depending on what they see from the defense's weakness week to week. So having that flexibility will help shape this offense. Petsying's saying that he wants this to be balanced and it's not necessarily run past fifty to fifty. He's saying, it's being able to do what they want to do when they want to do it. That'll be key for the Cardinals in the twenty four season. Kyler Murray and Marvin Harrison Junior hopefully big parts of that for the Cardinals.

Elsewhere in the NFC West, the Seahawks also have a fascinating situation on offense. Obviously a lot of changes in that building, but Ryan Grubb, who had success at Washington, was the O s at Alabama for like ten seconds, Fims get lured by Mike McDonald up to Seattle. How are they building out this offense with Grubb for the NFL?

Well, obviously, Grubb made the most of his weapons around Michael Pennock junior at the University of Washington with Romadoza, Jalen McMillan, Jalen Polk.

Now hoping to do the same with.

Dk Metcalf and Tyler Lockett and Noah Finn, Jackson Smith and Jigba and Zach Charbonay.

And Kenneth Walker.

And then there's the teacher, the person that Gino Smith raves about seeing from Ryan Grubb, Grubbs saying that if he went back and watched Gino Smith all the way back in his days at West Virginia to see how he has evolved as a player, how best he can utilize him. And as one Seahawks source described grub to me, he is a natural born play caller. An example that fourth than one in the Apple Cup for the University of Washington going against Washington State, they're at their own twenty nine fourth and one fake dive to the running back ends up being an end around to Roma Dune say twenty three yards just over a minute left.

They end up kicking the field goal to win.

It's not just being able to call that play in those big moments, it is all the preparation that goes into it to have that justified confidence to make those plays. Drew similar comparisons to Ben Johnson in that repart. If they can get that offense looking like that Lion's offense the last couple years of Ben Johnson, that would be a big win for the Seahawks.

Not a leap to say this Seahawks offense has the opportunity to be pretty good right out of the gate. Thank you very much, Palmar. And speaking of leaves, how about the guy who invited the lambo leaf, Larroy Butler. What does he make of this team from the Jordan Love contract situation. We'll ask him.

Next on the inside, Welcome back to the Insiders, Judy Batista, Stacey Dale's and the star of that video, friend of the show, Packers great Hall of Famer will Roy Butler had a belated happy birthday to you, Leroy.

Thank you, thank you very much. I really appreciate it. Thank you so much.

Absolutely, let's get right to it, because the Packers are already into training camp. Jordan Love is not practicing. Although he's there, there seems to be a lot of optimism that the contract is going to get done. What do you expect from him once the contract gets done and we see him on the field, where do you think he can go from where he ended last season?

Well, I just want to let people know that to not panic that he is not signed yet. And I thought it was smart by the team and him to come to camp and they're gonna work it out. Why practice, you know, if you're not gonna get your contract done. So it's not really a holdout. I mean, I think for the most part the whole off season they've been talking about this. Yes, they're gonna sign him too a deal now. I think me personally, I have no inside infermistion for disclosure because I'm on the board. I think some of the language could hold up because I think he should get a no trade clause him and the team should make sure he break this this old guard up of having a quarterback not finish his career in Green Bay. So he should be able to wave up trade claws and so does the team. The money is not big of an issue if you think about it. I thought it was gonna be a three year deal averaging about sixty million a year. So in the short term you'd be like the highest paid. But it's not a long term deal. Do like Tom Brady. Don't never be the highest paid. Tom Brady is the richest.

He's the richest.

You know you got inside information, Leroy, We know you guy, But okay, should we put those numbers on the record. Here's my thing, though, Leroy, I mean you know this.

They were the youngest team, the youngest roster in the NFL last season, the first really in the Super Bowl era, the youngest roster to win a playoff game.

You watched it, Judy watched it.

I watched it.

Everybody out there watched it. Doesn't it kind of feel a little bit weird? He's not out there. They didn't get it done with this nucleus of young receivers.

No, what would have been weird, Stacey had he been like Brandon, no you and not even show up and play hardball. Yeah, he was here when it wasn't mandatory. He was always here. As matter of fact, he's in every meeting. He walks out with the coach, I mean talking So the good thing about it is the language. You gotta get it right because you only have one chance at the body to Apple for your first major contract. And the reason why it's going to benefit the team because it'll be an extension instead of a new deal. Remember, he bet on himself last year when he signed the extension. He's scheduled to make like eleven million dollars, so outside the state is really not that big of a deal. But I will say this, I did not want to see the headlines of Jordan Love and a contract to be a distraction. But they're going to work it out. He's there, and I think the good thing about it is they've already told him that they're going to do it. They're just working out the language stuff.

Right before we let you go quickly, I want to turn to the defense because there's a whole lot of flups.

There, a lot of.

Changes there, new defensive coordinators, some questions about the pass defense, especially the secondary and area of the team. You know, well, so give us your scouting report on what that defense is going to look like this year real quick.

They had a different defense of three four defense, so this year happily comes in and now it's a four to three defense. So now you have to ask some of the guys who stood up then that's and Rashad Gary, are you gonna put your hand in the ground to become ends. But they just signed Kenny Clark by the way, you know, I don't think they're gonna do Jordan Love's contract. And to Kenny, get out of the way to congratulates McKenny. But quickly the reason why Examer McKinney is gonna be so helpful to this defense. He can cover, he can play the deep middle, and he can play down in the box. His defense is gonna be attacking style defense. But they gotta be smart. If I had to choose, I want to attacking style defense or I want a smart defense, I will always choose a smart defense. If you think about when you're twenty one to seventeen going into the fourth quarter, you have to figure out ways to get off the field. But they were only three plays away from going to playing for the NFC Championship game again on the Matt Lafloor.

Right, thank you for joining the show again. You are always welcome here. I'm sure we're going to see you as camps roll on I'm.

Glad I had to do it with my baby Jess.

We didn't even get if they're going to the Super Bowl. Ry, we didn't even hear it.

Yeah, they going to the Super Bowl. Beca New Orleans. I want Super Bowl thirty one in Super Bowl in New Orleans thirty one. Thank you Steve for that plod.

When we come back on The Insiders, still more news. It was a really busy day in the NFL, including news about Jaguar's cornerback Tyson Campbell coming up next.

Hi, now for the last call here on The Insiders. Tom Pilla, Sero, Gdbatista, Mike Gara, Fullo back with you. The Jaguars have locked up one of their home grown stars greata terms today, with cornerback Tyson jan Campbell on a four year, seventy six point five million dollar extension. A guy, Mike, who I have made the Pro Bowl, but this deal indicates they think he can play at that level.

Yeah, you get that done ahead of time before it gets more expensive.

Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, staying in Florida, have placed Randy Gregory on the reserve did not Report list when he did not report for the start of training camp. Remember he was not there for Mini camp either. That was an unexcused absence. He's got an active lawsuit against the NFL and the Broncos saying he was prescribed a drug that they will not let him use for his social anxiety. So we'll see if Brandy Gregory winds up reporting to the Buccaneers win.

If at all.

We have talked about a lot of wide receivers, there's another one. Bronco's coach Sean Payton says Courtland Suddeny is going to be at camp and ready to go. He wants a new contract too.

But apparently he is coming into camp.

While he waits, no one else is ready to go. Judy that blazer, you're a human chroma key, which gave the control room an idea. Can we see maybe some other looks so we can put on Julia like the red that you know, we can really leaves every color were blue. I think that that works as well. Uh that's my look. She looks like dressed like me. Now that's that's more famous.

I like that.

Like the rest of the teams, report the training camp tomorrow, we'll be here with you. Tune into the Insiders Fexas Real Good tenncy
