#PODCAST Lack of interest in "STEM" subjects cited as one of the main reasons fuelling South Africa's poor employment rate

By Newsbreak Producer Matthew Veeran - A clarion call is being made for government to contribute more towards skills that are scarce in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) sector. These subjects are important as they are often referred to as gateway subjects, especially if a learner wants to pursue careers in engineering, science and the technology fields. CEO of the PROTEC non-profit organisation, Balan Moodley says recent matric results in these subjects have seen a worrying decline - and it's due to a number of factors. He says the COVID-19 pandemic and learners avoiding subjects such as Physics is contributing to South Africa's dire unemployment rate...
