Before Nanci Kreidman started the Domestic Violence Action Center in Hawaii in 1990, there were few places for victims to get help. The non-proft started with a staff of just two people. April is Sexual Assault Awareness month. The CDC says more than 50% of women and almost 1 in 3 men experience sexual violence during their lifetime. Lai was a middle school student when she first learned about robotics. Her passion for coding and technology got her an internship with Booz Allen in college and later, a full-time job with the firm. Now, Lai works as a successful data scientist at the Honolulu office. Booz Allen’s Michael Collat, who is also the regional director of the FIRST Robotics Competition for high school students, explains the pathways to a successful career for Hawaii’s students.

For Hawaiian Language Month, we’re getting a fun lesson in Olelo Hawaii! Kumu Luana Kawa’a has served as a cultural advisor and Hawaiian language teacher for more than 30 years. She is currently a faculty member and director of Pai Ka Māna Student Support Services at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College and is the host and creator of the Morning Manaʻo podcast. Kawa’a helps us understand the importance of proper pronunciation and meaning and also offers some basic and useful phrases.
