Bigger Pic: MAS consulting on ways to make civil recourse and legal action easier for investors

View descriptionShare

Retail investors who suffer losses in the stock market due to market misconduct could soon find it easier to seek civil recourse. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) will consult on proposals later this year to strengthen investor protection through the enhancement of avenues to do so. Three areas of focus include enabling the pursuit of legal action, facilitating self-organisation, and providing access to funding. Mak Yuen Teen, Professor (Practice) of Accounting, NUS Business School & Director at the Centre for Investor Protection, discusses how adequate the latest suggestions are and if they are akin to giving lifejackets to passengers after putting them on a leaky boat.
