Public transport fares in Singapore will rise by 7% from December 26, with commuters paying up to 13 cents more per trip amid higher energy and operating costs. To ease the impact, the government is expanding the Public Transport Voucher scheme, with around 60,000 more households eligible and vouchers increasing from $60 to $80.
But will the additional support be enough to offset higher commuting costs? And with energy prices remaining volatile amid the Middle East conflict, what could this mean for future fare reviews?
On The Big Story, Hongbin Jeong speaks with Dr Lee Kwok Hao, Assistant Professor (Presidential Young Professor) at the Department of Strategy & Policy at the National University of Singapore Business School, about the fare increase, the impact on commuters and what to expect in the months ahead.
