Stephanie Hoff sits down with Nathan Ranallo, otherwise known as Nate The Hoof Guy. He grew up a dairy kid in Northwest Wisconsin and continues to serve the dairy community as a hoof trimmer. In 2020, Nate decided to start taking videos of his work and posting it to social media channels. He was met with overwhelming interest from both the farming and nonfarming communities. Since then he's had hundreds of thousands of views per video he posts. He sees social media as a tool to bridge the knowledge gap between the good work happening on farms and the end consumer.

Viral Hoof Trimmer Uses Social Media To Bridge Knowledge Gap

Art Fahey Sr. was born and raised on his families century farm in Green County. As recalls many memories one of the most significant ones that comes to mind is when his farm switched to using full electricity and using milking machines. At that time it took three farms in mile in order to get electricity. 

At the sharp age of 100 years old he tells us about his brothers and his first purchases of John Deere tractors from Belleville dealership, and how he has a John Deere implement he used to do little tasks around the farm to this day. He had a John Deere 50 that even lasted 70 years. 

Art's children also found success with his son John taking a role with the farm and how his daughter was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of fame

The Marshfield Clinic Research Institute is asking the public to submit ticks. This includes any new, invasive ticks moving into the state. Since then, people have been scooping up ticks and sending them to the institute in pre-paid collection kits. So far, scientists have identified more than 5,000 ticks submitted by citizens. Most of these have been the American dog (wood) tick and the deer (black-legged) tick.

Researchers also identified nine brown dog ticks, which are most frequently found in the southern U.S. They also identified five lone star ticks, mainly found in the southern and eastern U.S. The lone star ticks can give you an allergy to meat!

“The presence of brown dog and lone star ticks is intriguing as it may indicate spread from their typical habitats to Wisconsin,” says Alexandra Linz, Marshfield Clinic Research Institute associate research scientist. “We are trying to determine the extent and significance of this spread and the potential health effects.”

She says growers have had to stay on top of nutrient application and water levels in their marshes with all the rain we've been getting. Luckily, she has a favorable outlook on this year's crop. This is despite pollinator woes. Jonjak explains that cranberries rely on pollinators, such as bees.

With the growing interest in sustainable practices and local food production, beekeeping has become an essential part of modern agriculture. Recognizing the need for a dedicated event in the region, beekeepers Bill Werning and Doug Kolterman have created the Midwest Honeybee Expo. The expo is set to debut in January of 2025 and will serve as a gathering place for beekeepers of all levels. Co-creator Doug Koltermann shares more about what attendees can expect, but first shares how this idea came to be and the gap it fills.
