Test Your Generator Before The Storm

View descriptionShare

Heat, wind and thunderstorms, all severe weather we see in Wisconsin over the summer. And all can impact your electric grid on the farm. Jeff Mahlkuch is a project manager at A-1 Electric in Monroe. He suggests you make sure your standby generator is not only working, but can handle the electric load on your operation. If the power does go out -- don't try to run the entire farm at once. He says most of the farm generators he sees were never sized to run the milking equipment, ventilation equipment, feeding equipment, water system, and the entire house all at once. Make a list of priorities that fit your setup as far as what has to be running and what can wait until the larger loads are off. When a larger load is done, then go to the next one on the list.
