Stop 4 Of 12 -- State Office Candidate Farm Tours

The Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival is celebrating 22 years -- Sep. 6-8 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Jefferson. Festival Coordinator Hedge Becker says the Leicester Longwool Card Grading Event is new this year, one of the first of its kind in the Midwest. There will also be several educational sessions offered by the Leicester Longwool producers, including one on Tasmanian agriculture. The Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Co-op will host a full slate of producer education sessions including one featuring Woollets, an Argyle-based, alternate market for wool. Of course, the Crook & Whistle Stock Dog Trial returns with 60 handlers and three days of intense competition. Then, there is the Country Store with 120+ vendors from across the country and 80+ fiber arts classes, probably the largest such program nationally.

Spring Creeks Cattle Company has been selected as the 2024 Cattlemen of the Year by the Wisconsin Cattlemen's Association. With a legacy of excellence since 1992, this family-run operation has set a benchmark in cattle breeding and feeding, specializing in Limousin, Red Angus, and Black Angus breeds.

Known for their high-quality genetics and commitment to innovation, Spring Creeks Cattle Company has not only made significant strides in the seedstock market but has also embraced direct-to-consumer sales, further demonstrating their adaptability and dedication to the cattle industry. Owner Bob Mitchell shares more about the farm and the achievements that led them to this award.

“We started with Limousin cattle in 1992, aiming to offer something different in the seedstock market. Our goal was to create a superior product for the beef market by integrating Limousin genetics with Angus breeds,” said Bob Mitchell, co-owner of Springs Creek Cattle Company. “Today, we run several hundred cows and are proud to offer a diverse range of seedstock and finished cattle.”

Andrew Riley, Kwik Trip Dairy Production Manager, and Katarina Nemitz, a food scientist in the R&D department join Charitee Seebecker to provide an inside look at the meticulous process behind Kwik Trip’s ice cream creations.

Grace Larsen, UW-Madison Graduate Student has been helping to conduct this research and says their research explores both pre- and post-birth heat stress, aiming to improve calf welfare and enhance productivity on farms.
