State Fair Auction Breaks A Record And Dairy Whey Prices Keep Going

View descriptionShare

River infrastructure is a critical transportation component for production agriculture. Stephanie Hoff finds out about its current status with Dennis Wilmsmeyer. He’s the executive director of America's Central Port in the St. Louis region. He continues to advocate for infrastructure improvements along America’s waterways, including the Mississippi River. He asks that farmers pay attention to this, too, whether they directly use the river or not. Dennis says that’s because waterways are one of the primary export avenues for commodities and the primary route for inputs like fertilizer.

The Wisconsin State Fair's Governor's Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction broke some records last night.  The grand champion lamb sold for a record breaking $21,500 and sold to Molson-Coors.  It was also the first time a grand champion meat goat was sold.  It brought $10,000 and was purchased by Meijer.Wisconsin corn growers have faced numerous challenges this year from too much rain, to swarms of insects - and their challenges aren't done yet.

Stephanie Hoff talks with Dr. Damon Smith, UW-Extension Plant Pathologist about the potential losses from tar spot late in the growing season.  There's not much growers can do once it shows up.

Mike North, primary partner with EverAg, joins Pam Jahnke to talk about the recent upturn in the cheese market and what's happening with international demand. China's back it appears, while domestic restaurant dairy consumption falters.
