Short On Space? Show Rabbits!

View descriptionShare

Just like you don't have to live on a farm to be involved in 4H and FFA, you don't need to have access to a farm to show animals at the fair. Rabbits can be a low-cost, low-space project for students to get involved in their local fair scene. Wisconsin State Rabbit Breeders Association President Barb Semb says there are over 50 breeds to choose from, starting as low as $10 a bunny. Rabbits that are 3-4 months old do better at the fair, and some fairs have an age requirement of a few months. For your rabbit to earn a blue ribbon, it's got to be healthy, nicely groomed and have excellent 'table manners' -- meaning it will behave for the judge's examination. For the student to earn a blue ribbon in showmanship, you need to be able to know about your rabbits, their breed and all the details of how you care for it. Watch your rabbits carefully in this heat -- they can overheat or 'blow their coat' meaning they rapidly shed their fur in just a few hours. Freeze tiles and water bottles for the rabbits to lay on or next to.
